Taxed limbs and minds

248

I looked up at the clock, 80 minutes.  The closing moments would hold a disproportionate weight on our season.  After a couple of early chances, Motherwell did not cause Joe Hart any difficulty, but Celtic, unable to retain possession, could do no more than clear their lines and wait for the next wave of attack as yesterday’s games closed.

Winning leagues is all about getting the job done, not being a hard luck story.  Celtic, without a striker throughout the game, and weakened further through injury during it, won the three points, our fourth single goal victory in five league outings.  That freewheeling performance at Tannadice a week ago was the exception.

There is a hidden problem when games are so tight; players need to compete to the last kick.  This will drain energy further for a squad, with all the European games, internationals and unmatched ability to reach cup finals, already plays more football than any other in the game.  Limbs and minds are taxed.

My worry is not for the big games.  Adrenaline will pump in bucketfuls at Hampden and against Newco.  Not so much at Dingwall, Paisley or Perth.

As for the Europa Conference draw: anyone but Tottenham, please.  They were in the Champions League Final two years ago and have not slipped into obscurity that quickly.

  1. the continual slagging of Julien does my head in.

try following his story, the big fella was seriusly injured,it was a long way back.

he is now doing full training.

upto the staff and ange to declare when he is fit enough.

  2. The club was founded in 1916 and is frequently referred to by its original club name; “Glimt”

What’s with the forward slash in Bodo/Glimt.

It give me a branding idea though: Rangers/The Rangers/Sevco

  3. Happy with that draw. Didn’t fancy a trip to Azerbaijan or Belgrade. It’s a tie we can look forward to with some confidence.

  4. The fairytale continues! For the second consecutive season, Glimt have won the Eliteserien, the top level of Norwegian men’s football.

It came down to the final day, on which Bodø/Glimt won 3-0 at bottom of the table Mjøndalen. Despite nearest challengers Molde winning at Haugesund, Glimt’s win was enough to secure a second consecutive title.

  5. Yep. Second the CJ pushback.

    Utterly ridiculous level of mischief-making.

Guy’s a player. Guy’s had a tough year and needs eased back clearly. Guy would improve us instantly and complement CCV enormously.

For him and for us, I hope to see him soon.

  6. But Glimt’s investment in their youth system and a very clear, consistent style of play has paid off handsomely. Yet their success for a second successive season surprised many who expected the big guns Molde and Rosenberg to hit back this year, especially after the loss of several key players to European sides.

Glimt captain Ulrik Saltnes said it was “a greater achievement” than the first title win.

Last year, British coach Gregg Broughton spoke to the Life in Norway Show about Glimt’s academy setup. “My main direct task is to try and create and maintain the best development environments in Norway. That’s what we try and do within the Academy,” he said.

Much of the credit for the performances of the team go to manager Kjetil Knutsen, who has maintained a team full of energetic attacking play while retaining a solid defence. In 30 league games, Glimt conceded just 25 goals, 12 less than the next best defence in the league.

Glimt have also managed to outperform expectations in Europe this season, progressing to the group stage of the UEFA Conference League.

A memorable 6-1 win over Jose Mourinho’s Roma made sure the whole of Europe knew the name Bodø/Glimt!

  10. This is an extract of a great SALTIRES EN SEVILLA post on Sentinel Celts. Agree with every word, and I couldn’t say it better myself. So here it is:

The referee wasn’t incompetent, he was cheating. So why our players continue to accept this in supine fashion is bewildering … the early save from Jamesy deflected for a corner and called a bye kick?! . Classic opportunity for a posse of players to get stuck in to ref. Don’t just accept this from the start of a game, let him know he will be called out and surround him -aye even take a booking if necessary ( it’s coming anyway)

If we can point to mounting bookings for challenging clear errors By referees, this will develop into a legitimate grievance. Ironic laughing and head shaking is something they can handle and shrug off. It’s pointless and makes us look weak. Get them telt…. If it was an honest mistake ref. won’t have an issue with being called out. If it’s something else let him know early… earlier the better. Get some doubt into them early on.

Anyone else get the feeling these refs. Are emboldened by our lack of assertiveness- ‘ the daft fenian bassas just take it … so slap it into them’ …. fek that!!!!

I’ll repeat – the bookings are in the post in those situations – so use players in rotation to challenge referees. Led by captain, who has a right to speak directly to referee, but with some backup surrounding him required as he does it.

Will enjoy referees’ leader coming on to BBC Scotland to tell us all How he tore a strip off the referee for his errors…

Another thing … when booted stay down and take treatment … stop playing quickly after those nasty challenges/assaults. make it an issue, get players around the injured player, ‘talk’ to opponent and let him know … chat with the ref. make them realise we ‘know’ and are not going to just play on as if nothing has happened….obviously, this could be a significant risk of interruption and breaking flow and time-wasting suits opponents, but overall the benefits would outweigh the cost.

The decision making up top on breakaways is very poor ATM. I’m going to resist pointing at specific players as we are mid-season, and in the mix of a crucial spell where every player needs vocal backing and encouragement.

However, the pass selection or more importantly, the hesitation in making a pass into the correct space, or to feet is driving me mad! It’s happening too many times.

Everyone seems just too willing to delay the pass and hold on for an extra touch. Players making great runs are wasting their time … and it shows in body language… soon those runs will become less enthusiastic, less frequent. It’s just human nature.

This is also evident in our ‘press’ Kyogo and Jota work their legs off … not so sure when they look around they see other teammates making a similar commitment. A concern they will soon drop to Scottish domestic levels of application…which ain’t good!

Having said this, there are enough examples of good one touch and passing in the games to offer hope.

Praise due to Turnbull for learning how to keep his shots down … perhaps he should invite a few teammates to those coaching sessions.

A solid job done at the back and managing to defend set-pieces a bit better now, with more improvements to follow.

Ralston sitting behind Jura in some games ( and rotating) could be interesting…

    Dingwall next!

    Get it done Bhoys.

when did CJ get “found out “?

for whatever reason you dont like him, get over it.

  12. Yes,a few on here don’t like Jullien. For whatever reason.Usually they drag up the bad game on the Livi plastic. Will go down in their Celtic folklore.Never mind, with the big man out of the present picture,we have a wonderful substitute for the naysayers.Step forward,Greg Taylor.”Nae pace, too wee, canny cross the baw, canny pass”.Salivating in the hope,Hatate, whom they have never seen play, will replace him at RB.

Sadly for them, that bloody manager really rates him.Wit dis he know.

  13. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Hatate ….

“A player that is a combination of Juranovic Jota and Christie all in one”

    What part “Christie” is he?

  14. According to a report CCV price has gone up to 10ml…………to start i think it was in the two to three ml.

    Really……………no one knows.

  15. I think Ange has been unbelievably brave to come out and say what he has about his preparation, training regime & playing style.

He acknowledges that it is very tough for players at the start – how long is the start? He says he will not change and that it will get better. That is a lot to live up to. Pertinacious? Pragmatic? or, a mixture of both…..time will tell.

  16. Guys,

What if Christopher Jullien is playing us ? Stranger things have happened, if you know your history.

Was he one of the wantaway malcontents?

He went to Dubai to let our backroom staff continue with his recovery treatment. Anticipated length of absence 3 months we were told..

What has happened with such a time discrepancy? I know he has a knee injury, but I believe doctors were struggling to find his aggravated problem.

I have seen him at Parkhead, but I have never heard the club say he is back in full training.

It takes a special mentality to recover where you left off after a full year out. A lot has changed both on and off the park.

It is only prudent to question. Again history has taught us that lesson.

I hope my doubts are totally unfounded and Christopher makes a full, proactive and productive recovery.

    HH to all.

  17. There’s a whole list of international players, players of great technical ability, who have had a nightmare on that pitch at Livingston!

CJ had one, but his number of good games for us, with the League Cup Final against Sevco being the highlight, he was absolutely terrific that day, and he and FF ensured we won that cup, far outweighs that one game! por cierto.

  18. Can I ask some of the Bhoys and Ghirls do The Emirates allow some Celtic Supporters to park there cars on match days.

  19. ERNIE LYNCH

You’re more full of shit than a Billy Bowie tanker.

If there was so much loud singing and chanting why are so many moaning about the GB protest?

Why are the manager and players commenting on the silence?

What a senseless and utterly pointless response.

Celtic fans singing from the Jock Stein stand and other areas does not mean that the GB didn’t stage a silent protest. Nowhere did I say the GB didn’t have a protest.

I was responding to your constant attacks on the Celtic fans for their alleged lack of support and pointed our that there was a fair bit of noise and singing emanating from outwith the GB. But as you only see Celtic on TV you wouldn’t know that of course.

  21. I’m sure we had a Bluegrass celt on here from Kentucky – hope he / she’s ok given the devastation from the recent tornadoes.

  22. when did CJ get “found out “?

when he decides to return , when he doesn’t have to play second fiddle to anyone.

  23. prestonpans bhoys on

I watched Bodo’s game against Roma a remarkable game. An Italian team which couldn’t defend, although that was not their first team, if I recall correctly.

  24. GREENPINATA

Twice in your comment on Jullien you mention “history” and learning from it.

Could you elaborate on what history you are referring to?

  25. The days of wiping an injury down with a magic sponge and then sticking an Elastoplast on it have gone. I believe if NL was still in charge he would be pushing CJ to return to action. It’s now down to the medical science team to determine when a player is fit to return to action, por cierto.
