Teach them how to win the league with style and within budget

1046

I wasn’t at the 4-2 game against Oldco on 21 May 1979, when “10 men won the league, tra-la-la-la-la.”  Martin42 is still dealing with the consequences of going without me, but I endured the 0-3 defeat 20 years later that saw the title go to Ibrox.

In the intervening 19 years the authorities in Scotland have done their best to ensure we do not have a potential league winning game between Celtic and either of the Rangers group of clubs, but here we are.  There may never be another opportunity.

That Celtic team in season 1998-99 started poorly with new manager, Jo Venglos, working among one or two strong personalities in the dressing room, but by the springtime we were flowing and a title challenge was on.  When we met Newco on 2 May, a win would only give us an outside chance of the title.

Then came the news that we would play with a rookie, Scott Marshall.  The result wasn’t Scott’s fault, but the chance added a pressure to a defence which already had Stephane Mahe, for some of the game, anyway.  We could not handle the pressure.  Oldco stuck to task and won comfortably.

This was a time when titles in Scotland were decided by sheer brute force.  David Murray’s Rangers’ aggregate income for the four seasons which followed Celtic’s title win in 1998 was £180m – but they spent £282m, an average loss per season over four years of £25m.

The Rangers way of doing business was working.  It delivered titles and denied you and me football success.  There were many reasons to dislike how they did business.  Liquidation would take another 13 years, but the consequences of financial irresponsibility were always inevitable.

Newco will walk into Celtic Park on Sunday with their own version of Scott Marshall, Jak Alnwick, who has made just two senior appearances (no clean sheets) since arriving in Glasgow 18 months ago.  We need to make sure he endures a torrid afternoon.

After watching Graeme Murty earn two draws at Celtic Park I have a bit of respect for what he can do there.  He should not be underestimated, few managers arrive for their third visit undefeated, but the man is so embattled right now, his ability to prepare a team must be significantly impaired.

By contrast, Brendan Rodgers gave a tactical masterclass in the recent games at Ibrox and Hampden, costing Murty any chance of securing the Newco manager’s job long term.  For Brendan, Sunday is all about getting the job done as early as possible, before preparing the squad for the cup final, which is only three weeks away.

I know it’s greedy to ask for too much when we are within touching distance of a second successive treble, considering we only won two in 48 years before last season, but I really want this one.  Let’s do it for everyone who was at Celtic Park on 2 May 1999, or who lived through the years when David Murray and Dave King sat on an Oldco board which lost £35.3m with a turnover of only £44.8m.  Contemporary times show that some lessons cannot be taught too often to those who refuse to learn.

The same people are strutting around our game with the same sense of entitlement.  Show them how to win the league with style and within budget, Celtic.

Raffle to play in an 11-a-side game at Celtic Park, closes 15:00 today, Friday 27th

An incredible opportunity to play on the hallowed turf at Celtic Park around the end of the current season 2017-18, in Club sponsor Intelligent Car Leasing’s match.

You will be provided with complimentary Celtic kit and receive the full match-day experience including arrival through the front door, access to the dressing room and proudly walking down the tunnel to enter the famous field of play.

The opportunity to play on Celtic Park is just beyond words.  I did it a few years ago, the memories will live forever, as will the photographs.  The experience of preparing in the dressing room, as so many greats have done before, was fabulous.

Good luck!

  1. Priorities :

    1. Thank Heavens MIT didn’t land the podium Treble! The thoughts of it . . .

    2. Great to have BMCUWP back with us. Hope Lionsroar appears with more of the same good news.

    3. Do NOT remove the hose on Sunday until there isn’t a flicker left.

abba releasing work; imagine bertie said he was he was lacing his boots up again

  3. Disappointed with Paul67s leader conflating our games against Rangers in 1979 and 1999 with our game against sevco on Sunday. There is no correlation between the team we play on Sunday and those previous matches against the liquidated club so why make one unless you want to perpetuate the myth. Hh

Just catching up,nothing wrong with a nice cold bud,to many snobs on here?

    —————————————————————-

I’m probably the biggest beer snob you’ll ever meet. Preferences – draught, bottle and if needs must canned (I can taste the metal). I refuse to drink out of anything other than a glass in a pub and nothing does my head in more than being offered a bottle of German Weißbier without a glass in pubs in the U.K. Beer should always be poured to allow it to breathe. I can’t recall seeing anyone in a bar, in my 17 years in Germany, drinking out of a bottle – always poured. Sure you saw people drinking out of bottles outside but never in a bar.

My favourite beer is Weißbier followed by Guinness then any German beer. I like real ales and I am guilty of turning my nose up at anything less than 5% abv. I also love Belgian beers and am partial to the old Duvel – better the Duvel you know.

I also like beers that are presented with a glass that has an etched area on the bottom of the filling surface such as Duvel, Stella and San Miguel as this ensures a constant release of CO2 meaning that your pint has a head on it to the end.

So don’t get me started ????????

Re the 4-2 & 0-3 games. Was at both. Only 15 at the time for the 4-2 game. Sheer utter joy at every Celtic goal although that feeling went to fear after the third goal went in. Was in the Celtic end and I swear I could feel the concrete terracing move as the crowd jumped up and down. Said a small prayer that we all get out alive.

After the game my pal and me were walking down the Gallowgate and the traffic was at a standstill. People were out of their cars due to the gridlock. We got talking to a guy and his son who were going back to paisley and offered us a lift. Brilliant this couldn’t get any better. The four of us were giving it laldy with the rebel songs along the M8 when our driver suggested we take a detour past Castle Greyskull. Off the motorway we duly went and headed up Edminston Drive. Stopped the car outside the main door which unfortunately was shut but if CCTV existed in those days they would have been treated to A Grand Old Team the next morning.

Back in the car and our gracious driver dropped us off in Causeyside Street where we started to walk up off the road. Very quiet until we reached the junction of Neilston road where four guys with bowling blazers(all the badges) and trousers that were too short and showed off their cheap white socks.

“What was the score lads” one of the Quartet asked ?

4-2 to the Celtic we both said.

    Meltdown !

It’s not often being called a Fenian bastard was so sweet.

  6. What is the Stars on

As regular readers will know I am not one to repeat myself

However I feel the need to make an exception today.

NO CHANCE HE WILL GO TO THEM NO CHANCE

  11. Amidst all the hype and hoopla around the Gerrard for Sevco nonsense the bigger story is that Stevie Clarke is now the second Scottish manager to turn down the Ibrox job. Hh

  12. Good evening friends,

Whilst Aberdeen dropping any points tonight would mean that we only need a draw to secure our SEVENTH title in a row, my preference is for Aberdeen to keep on winning as they battle with Hibs for 2nd place ;-)

I do love my Friday Night Football.

Whether I can multi-task with a CQN quiz is another question. Probably depends on how gripping the game is.

And welcome back Bobbio! We may yet get a full 7-fold coupon on this weekend ;-)

  18. Bobby good to hear you are back posting.

Like other posters I can’t believer Gerrard is stupid enough to manage the Hun. Makes me wonder.

As for Paul’s continuity myth posts. Says it all really.

  19. Bankiebhoy1 I am sure Kevin was in my year at St Tams as well. Willie and Danny definitely were and not seen them since leaving school many many moons ago. Funny enough I passed Willie’s Ma and Da’s house yesterday and there was still a car sitting with the WMC number plate. Don’t know if it’s his or Dads. Remember he used to have a puggy in his hall. Do you remember Gerry Wylie that stayed through the back fae Willie?

    D. :)

  20. DAVID66 ha-ha dont rub it in, whats the score with gerrard have you heard anything.hh.

  21. Good to hear that the Swindon malingerer is back on the blog after his enforced absence at the tax payers expense. HH amigo
