Former Bolton Wanderers chairman, Phil Gartside, lost his battle with cancer yesterday. During Bolton’s 18 year Premier League tenure, Gartside wanted Celtic and Rangers in the league, as part of a reorganisation which would have seen a second tier Premier League created.
His motivation was the realisation that English football’s model was inherently dysfunctional. Teams like Bolton would over-commit to the player contracts necessary to keep them in the league, but with everyone else doing the same thing, it was only a matter of time before they finished in the bottom three. Less than 3 years since relegation Bolton face a winding-up order this month over a £2.2m debt to HMRC.
‘The Gartside Plan’ for league reorganisation found little support among his Premier League peers. Each passing TV deal poured ever-more money into the Premier League but the model remains dysfunctional. Those relegated regularly face dire consequences – and that’s before the bubble bursts.
As English and Welsh clubs who have dropped out of the Premier League continue to deal with the consequences, Europe’s mega-rich clubs are unhappy with their return from Champions League football. The relative democratisation of Champions League qualification, introduced by Michel Platini, which sees more clubs from smaller countries reach the group stage, is seen as a problem to some of Europe’s richest.
They want games against Manchester United, not Dinamo Zagreb. So do TV companies and sponsors. The football industry in Europe operates a series of EU sanctioned cartels. These sanctioned exceptions were granted on the basis that football is a sport, not a conventional business. The more top clubs act like businesses, not sporting institutions, the more reason to tear down the walls of these carters.

There is no moneyball strategy in operation at Celtic – we sell players to balance the books.
I explained yesterday that not to sell is NOT an option for the following reasons:
1) The players wanted to go to the riches and glamour of the EPL.
2) Even if they had stayed we would have had to pay the EPL wages or lose them for nothing in a couple of years as they waited out their contract.
3) Players waiting out their contracts would be disgruntled and would not perform.
4) Paying exhorbitant EPL wages to a few players would unsettle the squad.
5) Paying exhorbitant EPL wages and not selling the likes of Wanyama, Forster and VVD, would have pushed up our debt to around £50 million.
6) To service this debt would cost £5 million per season before a ball was kicked.
7) Having such a large debt would severely restrict our ability to bring in new players.

Leicester have lost only two out of 25 Premier League games this season, and what has been really refreshing about their success is they have simply stuck to what they are good at.
The reason so few sides have been able to deal with their tactics is not because they do not know how to cope with counter-attacks and an old-fashioned 4-4-2 formation, more that not many of them have even tried.
By that, I mean when teams have played the Foxes, they have believed they could beat them playing their way – and paid the price.
Some people think the 4-4-2 formation Leicester use is a bit prehistoric but they are showing it is a great system when your players know how to play it perfectly.
That is mostly down to coaching and the work they have done as a team in training, but it also relies on the intelligence of individuals to know they are all defending when they have not got the ball – which is a lot of the time.
Unlike the rest of the top teams, they are not bothered about possession – Leicester’s passing statistics are among the worst in the top flight.

Instead, they defend well, do not over-play at the back and get the ball upfield quickly, using the pace and efficiency of their forward players to punish teams.
They give the ball away a lot because they play a lot of quick, long passes forward into final third of the pitch.

You can’t just look at the end result and expect it to happen. A lot of blood sweat and tears got them to where they are. A lot of hard lessons.
I find that a run of poor results makes me want to watch Celtic even more at the moment because I am desparate to see Ronny do well. I can’t wait for the next game because I really want to see a win and a good performance.
Hopefully it’s a good performance and result tomorrow. I think the fans deserve that.

I agree that we have to sell to make ends meet, the players you mention had no intention of staying, nor did we have any notions on keeping them, they were bought along with countless others in the hope of making it and selling for a vast profit, the scouts deserve the credit for this, but when you weigh up all the others that didn’t make it, all the millions wasted, which you fail to mention, the garden ain’t so rosy.
I have praised Pedro many times for keeping the club on an even keel money wise, he is doing a grand job considering where we are, but his acumen is not being transferred to the pitch, and it’s the pitch where it matters, we are a football club after all.
Now, due to the lack of CL football the past couple of seasons, due to the fact we don’t have any big money players that we can sell for huge profit, we are in a bit of a bind financially to make ends meet, that is down to the gamble that Pedro took by not investing the money received for the likes of VW, Forster, KI, Ledely, Mathews, VvD etc.
We are where w e are cos of the lack of quality investment in the playing staff, the scattergun strategy is failing rapidly, what next, sell The Griff, Biton ? Where will that leave us ?
We should have built a spine for the team, a spine that had no sell on value, a spine that ad the nous to take on the likes of Malmo and Maribor.
Can you enlighten the blog as you seem to have all the answers.
