Tear down the walls of footballs cartels

534

Former Bolton Wanderers chairman, Phil Gartside, lost his battle with cancer yesterday. During Bolton’s 18 year Premier League tenure, Gartside wanted Celtic and Rangers in the league, as part of a reorganisation which would have seen a second tier Premier League created.

His motivation was the realisation that English football’s model was inherently dysfunctional. Teams like Bolton would over-commit to the player contracts necessary to keep them in the league, but with everyone else doing the same thing, it was only a matter of time before they finished in the bottom three. Less than 3 years since relegation Bolton face a winding-up order this month over a £2.2m debt to HMRC.

‘The Gartside Plan’ for league reorganisation found little support among his Premier League peers. Each passing TV deal poured ever-more money into the Premier League but the model remains dysfunctional. Those relegated regularly face dire consequences – and that’s before the bubble bursts.

As English and Welsh clubs who have dropped out of the Premier League continue to deal with the consequences, Europe’s mega-rich clubs are unhappy with their return from Champions League football. The relative democratisation of Champions League qualification, introduced by Michel Platini, which sees more clubs from smaller countries reach the group stage, is seen as a problem to some of Europe’s richest.

They want games against Manchester United, not Dinamo Zagreb. So do TV companies and sponsors.  The football industry in Europe operates a series of EU sanctioned cartels.  These sanctioned exceptions were granted on the basis that football is a sport, not a conventional business.  The more top clubs act like businesses, not sporting institutions, the more reason to tear down the walls of these carters.

Read back and enjoyed your contributions about Foggy Dew, many thanks. I’ll stick to ‘sons’, brings back great memories of a fine wee woman!

She also pronounced the ‘h’ in bhoys; “Mon the bi hoys!!”

I don’t know where I got Celtic from!!!

  2. Green Man,you are very selective when you try and compare results from past and present which destroys your argument. You mention beating Barca, and look at us now.Getting beat by Ross County,Aberdeen, and the Euro teams, such as Molde.

Whatever happened to your memory, when you can forget,Morton,Hearts,Kilmarnock,St Mirren, all knocking us out of domestic cups.I will miss out Ross County,as Lenny had only just taken over. Then we had such Euro giants as Utrecht,Sion,a 5,0 drubbing from Artmedia, etc.

Throughout our history we have highs and lows with much better teams than we have now,so please stop using guff to try and score some kind of point.

  3. These Media guys need to sell papers, and they have that mob that support Sevco eating out of there hand.anything bad that they print about Celtic, them jokers over at IBrokes, rush out and buy and keep theThe Hun and The Daily Ranger in business, and lets be honest the days of Press are finished, folk can get there news sport ,etc on the Internet.but that gullible mob in Govan believe anything that Traynor,Jackson, and Fat Leckie write in there columns, and that other mob rotten to the core with all sevco supporters Sky Sports.my contract is up with them in June,i will not give them 1 thin dime ever,im trying to make mind up as to were i will watch ,will it be BT Sports or Virgin Media.which im fortunate i can afford ,as for that media, that shower have the best seats in the main stand, why is that ,i say chase the whole lot of them, your not welcome.as for Fat Leckie he is one i would like to punch in the nose, there thats me got that of my chest

If you invited me into your house and I shit on your carpet would you invite me back?

    Serious question.

    __________

I hardly think it’s the same thing.

The press are biased. They don’t need access at Celtic to print negative stories about Celtic.

Let me ask you, do you genuinely believe they would stop pandering to Huns (and being Huns) if we banned them?

    It’s a dumb move.

    Tombhoy29,

So you don’t think stopping advertising or a club statement asking supporters to stop buying would make any difference ?

It would let their reporters in and report that, which IMO would bring other meeja outlets asking why

  6. CANAMALAR IT LOOKS LIKE OCD OBSESSION on 12TH FEBRUARY 2016 11:36 AM

Ok but it still leaves the other two options

No more advertising money and asking supporters not to buy their rags

    _________

I think we agree on those points. The club should absolutely reconsider any advertising from the rags and Clyde1

Asking the supporters not to buy the rags? Don’t think it’s a good move for the club to state this overtly. Leave that to the supporters trust.

That said, I’d like to see more statements from the club to clarify positions twisted in the press.

  7. TIMALOY29

If the club ban them from Celtic Park they, will continue unabated with their anti Celtic/Catholic campaign.

I, however, will feel a lot better about it!

  8. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Timbhoy29,

On the contrary I think a club statement is only fair, these organisations are doing their best to unsettle and damage out club, in business if a company tries to do this they’d usually face severe retaliation.

And supposedly we have some top hitters of industry, where’s the fight ?

  9. The Green Man

Awe aye, doing what you accuse others of doing? A runner? You have other things to do, others are not allowed to do that.? Lol, hilarious. I’v things to do too, anyway the SMSM oxygen suppliers have arrived, it’s Groundhog Day.

  10. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

I agree with the poster who recently pointed out that if we complained about one negative article,we would have to complain about them all.

And the sleekit bassas would play on that.

But we should definitely withhold advertising.

  11. CultsBhoy can not relate to Celtic Board ambitions on or off the park on

Anyone feel confident they can predict the starting line up v Ross County?… Naw me neither..!

Therein lies one of our major problems. The lack of consistency in team selection could be very damaging if not addressed.

I accept injuries play a part but I really like Ronnie to get squad of about 15 in a room and say – right I’m putting my faith in you lot – go deliver!

Who would be in your 15?

    Mr Sydney Tim

Your fixation with the demise Peter Lawwell is not based on any coherent reasoning and certainly makes no financial sense – so I am thinking it must be personal – what exactly do you believe he has done to you?

*and that’s the crux of the matter, nothing constructive just anti-PL, heated driveways, bonuses etc.

The Scum are scared of Ronny D, especially as they chased out PLG.

*absolutely, that was ned power both on and off the park and where did that get them, naesurname and liquidation. Just like Villa with Dr Joe and look at them now, 11 managers later.

  14. As the Irish the world over prepare to celebrate Easter 1916, the greatest gift to the world from the Irish diaspora – Celtic Football Club, will tear itself apart through fear.

The fear of the return of the cheating-bigoted-animals who faked their own death so that….they would avoid having to pay the £140 million that they owe to all the people that they cheated.

The fear that, Celtic supporters will be let down, badly let down by the custodians of the club who will do what they’ve always done….look the other way, after taking the fans money from them….allowing the cheating-bigoted-animals to lord it over what will be a hapless Celtic FC all together…..totally rudderless and, and having a supporter base that will be fractured whilst they all decide on who is to blame ?

If, Auldheid’s rebel-band don’t pull a miracle from the fire, then it will be the wilderness years as, the resurgent-cheating-bigoted-animals will put us at the back of the bus to stay……if the club lives that long.

    Going away.

  15. Who knows what any individual has went through.

    Spot on.

Sevco are a mess. The MSM know that the only way they can compete with us is if they drag us down to their level (no pun intended!)

  17. STAND UP AND FIGHT CELTIC!!!

FOR THE CLUB AND HER SUPPORTERS!!

Or are you part of the cartel?

  18. Se when we sing “stand up for the Champions” the people in the director box don’t stand up!!

I can only comment on what I have seen. The 2000s are the Real Deal, i thought the the 2001s were poor in comparison to them, big laddies in the younger team, perhaps a policy change.

The 15 year olds are well schooled in working the ball all the way in to the net, they also can, every wan of them, drill it home in the corner 9 out of 10 times from ootside the box. I’m talking a few years ago now. So dinnae be taking what I say as Gospel.
