Tell Buffon we don’t score goals but Gary Hooper does

455

Football reporting tends to follow trends and the Celtic support has been trending since the Barcelona game in November.  Juventus have arrived ready to steel themselves against wave after wave of Glasgow sentiment, but Gianluigi Buffon is right, crowds don’t score goals, or win games.

We have a part to play in settling the Celtic players and ensuring they are encouraged when they need it most (i.e. after making a mistake) but Celtic beat Barcelona because Neil Lennon designed a game plan which out-manoeuvred one of the most effective teams in history.  His players knew their tasks and stuck to plan impeccably.

If Juventus think that all they have to worry about are the fans they will lose tonight to players who have bloodied a few noses already this season.  Bizarrely, our secret weapon is not a stadium full of screaming lunatics (no implication or offence meant), it is a group of players who have proven that they can beat anyone.

Celtic have been rocked in the opening minutes of European games in recent seasons.  Starting with an edge is important.  We also need to be alert to the fact that Barcelona scored two of their three goals against Celtic beyond the 90 minute mark.  Games don’t end until the referee decides.  The 80-odd minutes between these times will take care of themselves.

And, if you meet Gianluigi on his way into Celtic Park tonight, tell him he’s right about crowds not scoring goals, but Gary Hooper does.

On Friday 1 March the Lisbon Lions will be at the Kerrydale Suite providing commentary and answering questions on their magnificent European Cup final win in 1967. This has never happened in 46 years since that game, to say it is a unique opportunity fails to tell the whole story.

The event is part of our 125 4 125 campaign – central to reinvigorating the charitable spirit which is part of the club we love. It will be a family occasions, tickets are available at £10 for adults and £5 for children. The night has been organised by several fans working in conjunction with the people at Celtic Charity, so please do your best to support this great occasion. Individual tickets or tables are available, details here.

Just about to head off for the game. Truth is I’ve no idea how the game’ll go. I am sure it’ll be noisy and there’ll be lots of singing but absolutely no idea what’s going to happen 7-0 to us, 7-0 to them right now seem as likely as any. I’d love to say I just hope it’s a good game and that we do ourselves justice and obviously these two things happen. But I just hope we win. Well.

  17. Ryder Cup star relishing Euro night in Paradise

By: Mark Henderson on 12 Feb, 2013 17:34

AS one of Europe´s top golfers, Edoardo Molinari has experienced many memorable atmospheres during his illustrious career – but the Italian knows he´s set to experience something special in Paradise.

The 31-year-old is a lifelong fan of Juvenus, and whenever he´s not starring in tournaments across the globe, he regularly supports his heroes from the stands.

And the Ryder Cup star will do so again tonight when the Bianconeri visit Celtic Park in the first-leg of the UEFA Champions League last-16 tie.

Molinari is naturally hoping the Turin side can earn a positive result leg but he knows the magnitude of this task as he explained to the official Celtic website in an exclusive interview.

“I´m really looking forward to the game,” he said. “I´m a very keen Juventus fan obviously and I have heard Celtic Park is a great stadium so I´m looking forward to the atmosphere tonight.

“I have heard that it´s going to be very loud. I saw some footage from the match against Barcelona and I have to say it looked very impressive, so I can´t wait to experience it tonight for the first time.

“I´m here with a group of fiends There are about five of us and we arrived this morning and had lunch in Glasgow city centre and then we´re heading to the stadium about six o´clock.

“It will be great tonight. It´s a big game for both teams and I´m sure the atmosphere will be unbelievable. For the players and for both teams it will be a great pleasure to play in such a good crowd.

“I would be happy with a draw as I know Celtic play very well at home, so if we can draw and maybe score one goal, it would be a good result for us. We always play to win games and we have been very successful in the last couple of years, and hopefully we can win tonight, but I know it will be difficult.”

And that will also help Molinari earn bragging rights with some of the Celtic supporters on the European tour which include Scottish golfer Stephen Gallacher –a recent winner of the Dubai Desert Classic – and Craig Connnelly who caddies for Martin Kaymer.

“Definitely!” he laughed. “I know Stephen also Martin Kaymer´s cadidie Craig Connelly so if we´re successful tonight, I will be sending them a few texts!”

You can read the full and exclusive interview with Edoardo Molinari in an upcoming issue of the Celtic View.

  18. Got to say I’m a bit worried about my attitude cause im extremely confident and predicting 3 nil to all and sundry on the bus !!!!

    Very very unlike me

Hail Hail and god bless the history Bhoys

  19. Back in from being aff oot, pancakes made and devoured, just about to sit down in front of the telly with some cold beer. Oh, how I wish I was at Paradise tonight but will be there in spirit. I don’t know why, but this has the feeling of the UEFA adventure of 2003 about it, I may be wrong, in fact I am often wrong, but there is something in the air.

I hope everybody enjoys tonight as much if not more than the Barcelona night and the qualification night.

    Hail! Hail! PMTYH, noworktomorrowcsc
