The best laid Foundations

The Celtic FC Foundation are holding a golf day in April to raise funds for autism in Scotland, the first such day the Foundation have organised.  When planning for the event, Leftybhoy, Brogan Rogan, Harry Brady, Tyneside No.1, me, Thomas and Jane from the Foundation, and Foundation chief exec, Tony Hamilton, wondered if and how we would be able to get winning Ryder Cup player, Stephen Gallacher, to help out.

Over two meetings we discussed strategy on how to get to Stephen, how to hone our pitch, explain the autism work, so that we might be able to get a pin flag signed, or something like that.  Two meetings!

Tony Hamilton was a Firhill last night when a Celtic fan spoke to him:

Celtic fan: “Are you the guy organising the golf day?”

Tony (thinking he’s about to sell a ticket): “Aye”.

Celtic fan: “I’m a golf pro, I might be able to help out with auction stuff.”

Tony (now worried about that ticket sale): “Great.  Which course are you pro at?”

Celtic fan: “No course, I’m on the European tour.  I’ll leave stuff with Stevie.”

Tony (confused what that means and wondering why this guy doesn’t have a regular job in a golf shop): “That’s very kind of you.”

After the game Tony checks his phone and sees a message from Tyneside No.1:

“Ryder Cup winner Stephen Gallacher in stand tonight. Have you rugby tackled him re our Golf Day yet?”

Tony’s been staring at a wall ever since.

Information on the golf day, complete with gratefully received supporting items from Stephen Gallacher, available here.

  1. Celtic will have known about the CH situation for a year.To think that any team would really be willing to sell a CH in January is wishful thinking with Europe and relegation battles looming.Jason might be told to stay at Celtic for another season by Man City.Ronny has already been speaking to them.Charley is a good ball playing CH.He was player of the year playing there.EFE should be kept as far as possible away from CH.To error prone, and is a poor jumper. If we had brought in a CH,how much game time would he have had?.Would we be happy to drop VVD,Jason ?.I dont think Ronny would. When you have quality you play them as often as possible.Next season will have to take care of itself.I am sure we have our eyes on a replacement for VVD.

  2. “we should have splashed out in january for decent centre half.. ”

    Easier said than done.

Would he definitely be better than Vvd?

Would any of them be happy to be benched?

Agree re. JD but down South they only Hoover up young talent to stop others getting them, not as potential first team players. JD won’t get a sniff at City, if they want a new partner for Kompany they’ll go and spend stupid money on someone who probably isn’t as good.

I hope we get him for another season, I think he will be out on loan again next season, I just think he may choose to go elsewhere. Unfortunately.

If I were the Man City coach I would buy VVD an play him and Denyaer together for the next decade.

Thankfully I am not the City coach and hope we can get Denayer on a permanent deal in the summer or another year loan. The Bhoy looks a superstar in the making. Frightening ability and composure for a 19 year old CB.

I agree. The best pair of CHs I have ever seen in a Celtic jersey.Absolute class.Speed, ability,Passing,VVD,imperious in the air,Jason and him terrific breaking forward.Breaking my heart that we HAVE to lose them.

As good as Charlie has been for us I don;t see his long term future at Celtic.

I just don’t see where he can fit in long term to Ronny style of play.

Something makes me think that Bolton will make a move in the sumemr with one year left of Charlie’s current deal.

It’s worrying that we need to possibly replace two CB’s in the summer but that is the nature of our club these days. If we are going to lose Virgil and Jason I hope we know who we want to replace them now because we need them in early in the window for the ECL qualifiers.

  6. Its not up to Jason who he goes out on loan to.Man City pay his wages. Its up to them.

Its ok some thinking a more technical league would be better, but the rough and tumble of the SPL,is a school of hard knocks. He has the technique, the toughening up wont harm him.

Ronny says he has a great relationship with City.We will see.

Shamefully I slept through the final. I blame a big dinner somewhat forced down and then trying to nap straight afterwards only to fall into a deep sleep.

I was awoken by shouts and screams from the nearby couch where my mum, dad and the Parish Priest were-to put it into the vernacular-going mental!

My fate was sealed. My mum said I didn’t cry but joined in the mental shouting. Two months old and a European cup in the cabinet. It was CELTIC for me.

Were we not supposed to be interested in another young Dutch CH, can’t remember his name but remember reading something about it. If we all know there’s going to be a gap at the back I’m sure Ronny will be aware and doing something about it. Whether they will be as good as what we have we’ll need to wait and see, Efe isn’t the answer even for SPL games…

Following in the boot-ye-steps of Goikoetxea, also Athletic Bilbao, who put Maradona out for a year, a tackle so sickening, I’m not posting the clip!

Barca players have been exceptionally brave in a few games I’ve seen this season, looking for and taking the ball knowing a clattering’s coming.

Defenders can’t seem to stop Suarez, Neymar and The Great One any other way.

On a more positive note, Messi, while keeping the ball off 4 defenders on the edge of the box, played the most exquisite through ball to Busquets, who squared for Pepe to score goal number 5 in that game.

As Ardiles said in the studio, no-one spots a run better than Messi, or plays the perfect ball so often once he spots him. That ‘s why he stands alone.

  11. LiviBhoy,

Charlie is a good CH.Played fantastic for us there.I would rather have someone we know than spend money on an unknown CH,who will need to bed in,and cost us millions.

We forget how well he played there for us.We have been dazzled, rightly so by VVD.

If possible Charley and Jason would be fine for us.OMO.

  12. Agree Mulgrew would be ok at CH…all Celtic need is OK.

VVD is more than we need except in Euroipe and tbh..even a great CH isn’t going to equip us to go far in Europe.

I’m just gald we appear to be getting back to entertaining format of play..its been a long time coming.

  15. Speaking of CBs, do you think Ronny will raid Dundee Utd again for John Souttar? Wilson from Hearts? Or does anyone think young O’Connell will step up to the first team?

I have often said about Celtic that it is not about buying players for X amount of money it’s about getting the right players. If Man City have the sense they will watch the Inter game with a lot of interest. What you have at Celtic at the minute is a pairing that works and over the longer term taking a bit of a gamble and pairing them now would save City a fortune. Jose Mourinho has done wonders in the transfer market since returning to Chelski. He has managed to offload players he didn;t fancy that the media seem to rate. He got £50m from PSG for side show Bob, £40m from Man Utd for Mata and £25m+ for Schurle. All very able players but not to his liking and punted at their highest market value. Now I am no fan of Mourinho but credit is deserved when due. Man City can do the same with Kompany who I believe has peaked. A fantastic player who at 17 single handedly held us out after losing his defence partner in a ECL game in Belgium. He has lost a yard. Man City should be thinking about the future and build a CB pairing that can be a main stay for years to come. That may mean a season where they take time to gel with their team mates but it could also be the best business they ever do. CB pairings are not easilly knitted together. They can take years to gel. I always relate CB pairing to Bruce and Pallister. Individually not the best players in the world but a formidable partnership. They were however solid and as a pair they were formidable. JD & VVD have shown their potential to be a fantastic pairing. They have all the attributes for the modern game. I hope Man City don;t recognise this and we manage to hold onto at least JD if VVD has decided that he would be better off elsewhere.

Kompany would fetch a very decent fee at the minute. In my opinion JD and VVD would be able to pair up at the highest level for the next decade and only cost a VVD transfer fee of £10m-£15m. Kompany would fetch double that.

Man City are in need of a rebuild of their spine. Basically when Toure is out of the team they are toiling. I don;t think as a club they have the sense of Jose though of when to sell sensibly and buy sensibly. They throw money at big names and out of contract Arsenal players. Man Utd are making similar mistakes under LVG They are spending huge fees and wages on the wong players. They are buying over valued poster boys without actually thinking about the team and where they all fit in. Rooney is shifted into a midfield role. They have about £150m worth of player between middle and front and their CB scores twice. I think right now Celtic are better than Man Utd and would beat them in a one off match.

The new EPL TV deal guarantee’s one thing. Club owners throwing money at SKY players. What I mean by that is the players that Sky and their pundits have decided are good players. It’s lazy scouting. It’s what the majority of England does. Man Utd had their fingers burnt by Zaha. Sky raved about this guy through their various outlets for a year. He went to Man Utd and couldn;t even get in the team. He is a multi millionaire either through good agent management or a friend at Sky who talked about this guy 24 hours a day for weeks. The influence of TV on the game down South is huge. It can make or break a career. The boy at Spurs Kane is rattling the goals in and the pressure from Sky was 24/7 rolling out various pundits telling Roy Hodgson why they should call this boy up. Now I’m not saying he doesn;t deserve it but it wasn;t long ago that Andros Townsend was the same also at Spurs. Recently I believe Spurs tried to loan him out and he is well out of the picture. The first player I remenber in England getting this hype and exposure was Keiron Dyer. A very good player on his day but not ever fully fit. England caps and huge moves followed he never done much of note in his career. He is a multi millionaire though.

My point is that in my opinion the sensible move for a club like City would be to take on VVD and play him with Denayer and stick with it. Sort of like Ferguson did with his babes in the late 90’s. Hansen said that too many kids was a crazy move and said his famous quote about winning honours with young players in a team. It worked out for Fergie because he burtured them and took time with them. That will not happen now. Sky are pushing teams by using the fans to better their product. They want the big names. They want the colourful characters. They want a player like Suaraez who bites people so they can roll out their experts and psychologists to bore and brain wash people 24/7 on SSN. Brining in the right and sensible players to build a long term football team and focus on the football and not the side shows does not suit Sky and their agenda. They will push and push clubs through an array of ex players making more than they did in their playing careers telling the fans of their ormer clubs what players they should sign. These players will make Sky’s products better and fill the rolling ticker tape on Sky Sports News day and night. They want clubs to buy big name and high priced players. They want them to be amazingly good or bad. If they are ghood they can praise them to extraordinary levels and if they are bad they can really get stuck into them. Ballotelli is a gift for Sky. He gets more air time than Harry Kane. It’s a media frenzy culminating in the highly over hyped and ultimately embarrassing transfer deadline day when Sky pressurise clubs to make a deadline day purchase, they make up rumours, get fans whipped into a frenzy and virtually embarrass clubs with their lack of deadline day action.

VVD and JD will not be paired up for Man City and most likely they will end up at a Stoke or West Brom and do fairly well. If Sky Sports were hyping them up though then you would see a flurry of interest and you would also see fans clamour for their club to sign them.

Ideally we could get VVD to stay and sign a new deal and get JD on another season long loan with a view to a permanent deal but I fear we will be in the hunt for two CB’s weeks before we face the UCL qualifiers.

As I said CB pairings take time to gel and get an understading some can come together quickly and look the part but the back 4 or 5 including the keeper need to build up relationships and understanding over many games before they click usually. We have our most important games at the start of every season and unfortunatley most years we are gelling a new spine. It’s unfortunate but we are used to it now.

It works best when you have a partnership in the middle at the back of course, one of the two acts as sweeper. Next season, Charlie and Efe would be my preference and feed the young O’Connell in gradually.

I still think Efe can be a player. Maybe I am mental but I think the Bhoy has something. Where he actually plays though for us is a bit of a mystery at the minute. I suspect that Celtic do a helluva lot of development work on the training ground because Bitton, Johansen and Griffith’s look as though they are new players the last month. That pleases me a lot. That tells me a lot about our coaching staff. Developing players you already have to be better is not something you se a lot of these days.

  27. As I posted a few weeks ago , good to see that the thought of celtic losing there two class defenders in the summer , is making the fans aware of just how big a set back this will be to the team . Celtic under Ronny have now began to show great promise , but like other improvements in the team they are short lived , I stated Imho that VVD was the best ch I have seen in a celtic Jersey , he is ably supported by Jason Denayer .giving the team a solid back line , seldom seen in all my years following the hoops . We never seem to be able to push on and slot in the gradual replacement players to improve even further , as just when we think we are getting there ,we lose our main men . Wanyama , hooper . Ledley .spring to mind . The two lads mentioned will move on . hopefully in vvd case for what he,s worth , Mega money . I doubt celtic will find two ready made replacements , but I sincerely hope that RD and PL who will know better than us the seasons end position , are at this moment searching out as near as possible replacements as they can get . I never decry any player fortunate enough to adorn the hoops , but also know some are way better than others . But it concerns me that having watched our two present central defenders , some fans would be happy with effe and Charlie . It will IMHO be a step back bringing in as near as possible replacements , without resorting to playing these two Bhoys in central defence .
