The best laid Foundations

The Celtic FC Foundation are holding a golf day in April to raise funds for autism in Scotland, the first such day the Foundation have organised.  When planning for the event, Leftybhoy, Brogan Rogan, Harry Brady, Tyneside No.1, me, Thomas and Jane from the Foundation, and Foundation chief exec, Tony Hamilton, wondered if and how we would be able to get winning Ryder Cup player, Stephen Gallacher, to help out.

Over two meetings we discussed strategy on how to get to Stephen, how to hone our pitch, explain the autism work, so that we might be able to get a pin flag signed, or something like that.  Two meetings!

Tony Hamilton was a Firhill last night when a Celtic fan spoke to him:

Celtic fan: “Are you the guy organising the golf day?”

Tony (thinking he’s about to sell a ticket): “Aye”.

Celtic fan: “I’m a golf pro, I might be able to help out with auction stuff.”

Tony (now worried about that ticket sale): “Great.  Which course are you pro at?”

Celtic fan: “No course, I’m on the European tour.  I’ll leave stuff with Stevie.”

Tony (confused what that means and wondering why this guy doesn’t have a regular job in a golf shop): “That’s very kind of you.”

After the game Tony checks his phone and sees a message from Tyneside No.1:

“Ryder Cup winner Stephen Gallacher in stand tonight. Have you rugby tackled him re our Golf Day yet?”

Tony’s been staring at a wall ever since.

Information on the golf day, complete with gratefully received supporting items from Stephen Gallacher, available here.

Ye the one that Roy C posts has become the kind of iconic image of that night. I was just surprised when I saw the one I posted because I’d never seen it before.

Looking forward to Belfast but to be honest I’m quite glad im only going for the one night, the recovery period seems to be longer these days.

More than 20 years ago my mate and I would often meet in town for a few beers on a Friday afternoon.

Well one day we decided to go into The Bank (pub) on Queen St, it’s now The International. I noticed a familiar face sitting at a table in the corner and eventually it dawned on me that it was Bobby Murdoch.

I noticed that he was drinking lager, ordered a pint and took it over to him, mumbling something about him being a true hero despite never having the opportunity to see him play.

When I went to walk away he insisted that my mate and I joined up.

And for about 5 hours I got to sit and get merrily drunk in the company of greatness.

As far as I can remember Johnny Kelly was signed from Sparta Rotterdam. I can only him playing 2 games for the hoops in season 60/61.

Remember the game at Ipox against the Hibees and John McNamee. Big John, playing for Hibs that night came on the park after halftime cupping a fag in his hand, either that he had one helluva bright ruby ring on.

  18. There’s been a couple of John Kellys played for the bhoys through the years, the one I was referring to came from Crewe, he only made 3 appearances for us.

As I was perusing the Celtic Wiki I came across a Francis Kelly who played twice for us during the wartime years, I recall him living up Castlehill in Dumbarton.

His grandson Chis is an assistant captain with the Boston Bruins of NHL fame.
