The dramatically rising Celtic share price

1221

At the time of writing the Celtic ordinary share price is sitting at 68p.  For more than a year before the Rangers International share price was announced last month the price of Celtic shares never left the thirties.  There has been considerably conjecture on why this is, which is probably worth some comment.

Rangers International’s (RI) opening share price of 70p valued the company at around £50m.  By contrast, Celtic, who are and always have been, a top flight club, and who are in the financially rewarding Champions League, were valued at around £34m.  On an initial pass, Celtic looked undervalued.

There are a few caveats to this story worth telling before you empty your holiday fund on the latest batch of Dutch tulips.  Since Fergus McCann took over in 1994 Celtic have only paid dividends on preference shares, which the FSA require the club to regard as debt, not equity.  No dividends have ever been paid on the ordinary shares and there appears to be no appetite among shareholders for this to change.

Celtic shares are also particularly illiquid – very few are available for sale at any point in time.  When even a small surge of new buyers enter an illiquid market, without a corresponding rise in the number of sellers, a share price can be bid up considerably.  Consider a stable average of 10 buyers and 10 sellers each day of a stock with 29,000 shareholders suddenly changing to 20 buyers and 10 sellers.  The price would rocket despite no change in the fundamentals.

The possibility of Celtic playing in a domestic league beyond Scotland has again been on the agenda.  Such an outcome would radically change the financial prospects of the club and is likely to have a considerable impact on the share price, but this remains no more than a talking point at the moment.  Investors should regard this potential outcome as speculative.

Rangers International attracted considerable investment from organisations seeking a level of financial return which supports that £50m valuation.  We can speculate what percentage return they will expect but the RI board have been explicit on their intention to produce a financial return.

I’ll not be investing in either company at the moment.  Celtic will not pay a dividend on equity shares (which in years to come will evidently be a really good thing) and although I am sure Rangers International’s board will deliver an on-target return for investors (which in years to come will evidently be a really good thing), they appear negatively surprised by recent news on structural change in the Scottish game.  Always take professional advice before investing more than you can afford to lose.

  1. What’s the scoop with griffiths twitter comment about telling a fan to go back to his own country? Anyone heard anything?

  2. 16 roads - Neil Lennon walks on water. on

The current Celtic squad alone is worth somewhere in the region of about £100million alone.

That Garry Parker is turning into a wee bit of a Celtic legend already in my humble opinion.

We need to get the price of watching football down.

You can talk about reconstruction and all the different permeations for as long as you want, but the most important aspect of watching football from a supporter’s perspective is the cost.

Sure supporters will pay big money to watch Barcelona and Juventus, but they wouldn’t do it on a weekly basis, because most people just can’t afford it, and that is the reality of the situation.

I am delighted that Celtic has agreed a stand-alone shirt sponsorship deal with Magners, but if we can’t guarantee Champions League football every season, then we need to increase our commercial revenue streams.

We play in an environment where the television money on offer cannot sustain our playing squad and ambitions, so unless we can find a way into another League, we have to improve our business model.

I have wrote to Stewart Regan and Neil Doncaster on a number of occasions suggesting we try to follow the example of the Bundesliga, where they play in family friendly modern stadia at a reasonable cost to the supporter, I wasted my time.

We are fortunate at Celtic; we have a modern stadium with good facilities. We have a first class team competing and performing well on the big stage of Europe, but the stadium is only full when we play in the Champions League.

I said at the Celtic AGM, that as well as investing in the youth on the playing side, we need to invest in the youth on the supporter’s side; we need to encourage more families to come to Celtic Park, for that to happen it must be affordable as well as enjoyable.

I know Angela Forbes and her staff at the ticket office work extremely hard at trying to get more fans through the gates, I’m sure she will have some new initiatives in place for next year. Until then, let’s all get behind our team, and give them the support they so richly deserve.

  4. Someone should tell Chuck the EPL dont want them. He really is a clown…

RANGERS chief executive Charles Green has said he will use sex discrimination laws to force Uefa into letting the Scottish side to join the English Premier League.

Green has regularly suggested he could campaign for the Glasgow side to join a league south of the border.

And his determination for Rangers to join English football has been further strengthened by the decision of Scottish authorities to re-organise their league structure.

The proposals, which clubs will vote on before the end of this month, will see Rangers remain in the bottom tier even if they win this season’s Third Division title.

But Green claimed the Ibrox outfit will ditch Scottish football altogether if the new plans get the go-ahead.

“As the structures stand now, there are not many options. But I’m not one for hiding my light behind a bushel,” he told TalkSport.

“People say you can’t go into England because you are not allowed cross-borders (leagues).

“Well there is now a cross-border (league). You have a Uefa-sanctioned professional women’s league in Belgium and Holland, so we have a precedent there.

“If there was an opportunity to join a cross-border league and that was challenged by Uefa, I would go to Strasbourg and challenge the sexual equality.”

Green also suggested that he would have the backing of Rangers’ fans if took the club away from Scotland, even if they had to begin in the lower leagues.

  5. SICKENED telly host Eamonn Holmes told viewers yesterday how Rangers fans were abusing him on Twitter.

The Sky News presenter revealed he’d been subjected to “violent vitriol” from Gers supporters.

And within minutes of his comments in a live broadcast he received MORE attacks from Light Blues followers.

Holmes was discussing footy fans’ tweets with sports reporter Jacquie Beltrau when he described some as “Neanderthal” and “foul mouthed”. He added: “Yesterday I had violent vitriol from Bradford and Glasgow Rangers.

“There’s a lot of angry people out there. There’s good people but a lot of angry thugs.”

Moments later, he looked up from his desk’s live Twitter feed and said: “They have started already.”

One post for Belfast-born Holmes, from a fan calling himself Apollo, read: “Thought you were a bit brave mentioning abuse from Rangers supporters. What’s your background again?”

David Woodward wrote: “Not wise to get digs into the 140-year-old club, porky. It’s always remembered.”

Last night John Macmillan, secretary of Rangers Supporters Association said: “If Mr Holmes has had abusive tweets it’s unacceptable.”

  6. Australian goalkeeper Mat Ryan has called off a trial with Rangers after failing to receive assurances from the club over their future league placement.

Central Coast’s general manager, Lawrie McKinna, took to Twitter to explain the reason for Ryan deciding against making the trip to link up with Ally McCoist’s side.

“Mat Ryan will not be going to Rangers on Monday,” he said.

“[His] reason for not going on trial next week was that he wanted to know what league they will play and they won’t know yet.”

Obviously some mistake as Fat Sally has said every player in the world wants to play for Sevco.

“We’ve had camera crews and journalists here from all over the world and what is happening here has very much become a global story.

“I don’t think that has done us any harm in the respect of trying to get players in here because we are very much at the forefront of people’s news and views. It’s up to us to utilise that.”

They are there to laugh at you Sally…

    Interesting article, Paul.

However, not being a finance type of person, I’m not sure I understand this bit:

“I am sure Rangers International’s board will deliver an on-target return for investors (which in years to come will evidently be a really good thing)”

After an hour on my old-fashioned, wind-up Kindle, I’ve found out the Celtic v Bucharest game is on ESPN at half six on Tuesday.

    ( courtesy of talkceltic.net ).

  13. Bazza asked the original share price it was £620 for a block of ten, when Fergus sold the 10 became 1000 therefore the price reduced per share but if you had 10 they multiplied by 100 ie. 10 shares became 1000

  14. I recently started reading The Psychopath Test by Jon Ronson.

The more I read of this book, the more I recognise the same traits in Chucky:

    1. Glib and Superficial Charm

The tendency to be smooth, engaging, charming, slick, and verbally facile. Psychopathic charm is not in the least shy, self-conscious, or afraid to say anything. A psychopath never gets tongue-tied. They have freed themselves from the social conventions about taking turns in talking, for example.

  15. The Psychopath Test

    2 Grandiose Self-Worth

A grossly inflated view of one’s abilities and self-worth, self-assured, opinionated, cocky, a braggart. Psychopaths are arrogant people who believe they are superior human beings.

  16. The Psychopath Test

    14 Impulsivity

The occurrence of behaviors that are unpremeditated and lack reflection or planning; inability to resist temptation, frustrations, and urges; a lack of deliberation without considering the consequences; foolhardy, rash, unpredictable, erratic, and reckless.

cert says i bought 250 shares . im sure it was about a grand. i can only remember my mum going tonto at me and my dad from him letting me buy them.

    worth every lost penny though.

  19. Bazzabhoy…. Cash them in and let’s get on the Swally mate!!!!

    Only joking.

Chuckles and his Sevconian band are just brilliant for a laugh. If Sevco can’t move to any league they choose well Swansea and Cardiff should just be bombed out the English league!!!

Hope he’s around for a while!!

    Prize fud

  20. Bazzabhoy if you bought your shares as part of the original issue you now have 2500 shares. I may be wrong buy at the time the shares were trading at around £25.00 they were reduced in value to 25p but your shareholding was multiplied by 10, giving you the same monetary value but 10 times more shares. Therefore I reckon your shares are worth £1700. I would take financial advice or maybe one of our more savvy financial posters can advise Hail Hail Hebcelt

  21. Bazza

your shares are worth infinitely more than sevcos, and will be around for a helluva lot longer

  22. I’m sure the break will be ideal for preperation work for the Juve games, along with some well earned “downtime”.

  23. If the sevco want to make money they should send Mr Green on a world tour. I would pay money to see him………he is funnier than Billy Connelly. Keep the speeches coming please Mr Green.

Like many Celtic supporters I made a contribution rather than an investment in Celtic’s future when Fergus put out his offer.I contributed for both myself and my son and whilst I am a financial person I consider what I hold to be invaluable.

  25. I think Charles Green is either pulling some kind of smoke and mirrors trick to muddy the waters re the Rangers real opinion of the reorg proposals.

Or he has outlived his usefulness and the people who want to own the next version of the club that plays out of Ibrox ie the “real” fans have decided to set the press on him.

Anyway, what we see is not what is really happening.

  27. Asonofdan; with respect, I have a seat in the front of the main stand and cannot agree with you in respect of ‘good facilities’. The snack stand is small. You require to queue for ages and I mean ages. If you don’t get there some fifteen minutes before half time, you have no chance. I simply don’t bother any longer! The quality and prices are dreadful. Fine if you are in one of the lounges and you can get a drink before and after the game. Anywhere else within the stadium you get nothing. It’s about time decent facilities were provided to bring the stadium up to the 21st century! I love Celtic but please the facilities are garbage!
