The exceptional Celtic Movement

900

When this publishes, I should be a few kilometres into the Great Scottish Run.  These events can be humbling.  You see people there with messages on their shirts.  ‘The big C’ gets a lot of mentions, in many of its forms, as does heart disease and conditions most of us will, fortunately, be less familiar with.  Some simply have a loved one’s smiling photograph on their back.  Their former feeling of helplessness matured into purposeful action.

I’m running for Celtic Charity’s 1254125 campaign.  This is not something controlled or even organised by the club, but it is fundamental to what Celtic Football Club is.  The Celtic Movement was called together in a church hall in November 1887 to alleviate the distress of poverty in those unable to feed themselves.  It is different from other clubs because it started differently and has since walked unfamiliar roads.

The spirit to help others has been increasingly self-evident in recent years but I am sure the commitment has become more embedded as a result of 1254125.  It is now part of our routine, what we know to expect from ourselves.

We will only stay different if you and I continue to insist we walk (or run) unfamiliar roads.  We all worry about where our club is going.  There is little we can do about many potential dangers but we can make sure Celtic remains anchored to the spirit which founded it.  You can support 1254125 through the MyDonate page I setup to convince me I shouldn’t give up halfway through this run.  Your support is appreciated.

Yesterday we lost Cllr George Ryan, or St John Doyle, as he was known on these pages.  George touched the lives of hundreds of people but unless you were in direct contact, you would not know what he did for the people of Glasgow, for Celtic supporters in difficulty, or even for the Thai Tims.  He was an exceptional Celtic man who lived the way exceptional Celtic people have ever since that meeting in St Mary’s Hall.

You mean PC Brines. Yip he is or was one of Strathclydes finest or whatever the are called now. Where does that ring a bell??.

    ———–

I’m sure he was the one that went part time with the polis to do more lucrative ref work (i.e. Europe etc) but the even the SFA thought him mince so didn’t put him forward for games. So Brines asked to go back to full time with the polis, who told him no,

So he’s part time and does any ref job thrown his way.

To add insult to injury ( no pun intended ) this is the same Lasley and Mothewell team/clun/company that never put in a tackle against Sevco in a Cup game against a very fragile newborn T’Rangers a while back – at a time when Motherwell were sitting 2nd in the SPL.

For me, that sums up a lot of what is wrong with the game in Scotland.

Hope that the brilliant talent that is Adam Mathews wont be out for too long.

Aleady he will miss out on a Wales cap, and most probably some Champions League games.

Hope you’re proud of that, Mr Lasley!

The game in Scotland has always been corrupt

    ……………………………………………………………………….

Alex Totten agreed with your dad and he was a Rangers player:

Courier article: “The chief inspector approached Totten, took hold of him and accompanied him to the St Johnstone dug-out, said the sheriff. However later Totten stood up and shouted and swore at Smith, alleging that Rangers striker Ally McCoist was a cheat and his club were ruining Scottish football and wanted all decisions in their favour.”

There was me having a relaxing wee lurk minding my own business and then wooft, I’ve got that overwhelming feeling of inadequacy again. That’s it, off oot to get some ginger hair dye and some extra large chicken fillets.

I hope I never see another Celtic rangers game for the rest of my life. So far, so good.

Brines will have a cushy wee desk job. The brass would never out him out on the beat.

I loathe the man. Not just because he is cleary an orange soup taker, its his handling of the players. He has absolutely no respect for them and trys to stare them out to provoke them. An utter arse of a man.

The bigot had a go at numerous ” opponents” and most were on tv or well documented.

Yeah. There are many CQNers who were closer to George than I and it would be more appropriate from them to contact his family regarding this. If his family approve, those CQNers could organise it too. I and many other CQNers will give whatever support is required.

  9. The high, or rather the low-water mark with Brines came for me at Perth in Mowbray’s time when he failed to penalise a St Johnstone player who placed the ball with both hands in his own box (thinking he was getting a free kick when he wasn’t) and Brines simply waved play on.

Buffoon rather than bigot I think but like Collum they have good survival instincts and practice anticipatory compliance. They know what is expected of them and do it to get on.

I will ask him to put the idea to the family.

If the GB approve of a banner as a tribute to George. They may wish to make it themselves. If they do then we could make a donation to them. If they wish us to provide one. I know someone who makes banners, although there is not much time until the Ajax game.

Apologies for the late reply I got sent for the messages :-(

Your anguish over this matter is evident from your posts and I sincerely hope that I don’t find myself in the tortuous position you do over this.

I’m concerned that non attendance at any future game against Sevco would help to legitimise their spurious claims of being the same club.

It’s inevitable that one day we will face them either in league or cup form and I’m now convinced that the further off this event is, the better for the likes of you and me. Their poison and vitriol is limited to those who choose to listen/watch them. It is best left there and I have no desire to see it live any time soon.

I completely understand that the actions of our own club will determine for some their own actions. However, I won’t be allowing DD, PL et al decide whether I’ll be watching Celtic or not.

When Adam went down it was very clear it was serious.

Brines awarded the corner and looked away from Adam before waving to the physio to attend to him off the park. No concern for the player at all.

In the second half a well player went down at the edge of the pitch as we got a corner. Physio on for a few mins .. guy off the park and sub on before we were allowed to taken the corner.

Later when efe took a knock in the back in our area … physio on .. efe off behind the goal … not allowed back on until ball went up their end of the park

I worked for a spell in the prison service (worked, not kept) and with some retired police officers. Was told then he was a st holder at the bigotdome from ex officers that knew him well. That would be 2004/5. Strangely enough, the most senior ex cop was a tim. Seriously. He was in complete charge of the operations. Great guy and a gentleman.

    Weefra…,

Speaking if token tims I’ve no seen him in here for a while

  17. Just saw the lasley challenge on AM.

Confirmed what I thought at the game from my seat in 116 – so I had a good view.

Penalty kick should have been awarded and a a caution for the challenge. Lasley came through Adam and played the man before the ball.

  18. WeefratheTim

    ———-

I know a ref, low level but is doing the lines now (Jambo of course, lots of them are).

Brines is not liked/rated by the SFA/Refs, they tried to get him to quit by giving him all the crap games week after week but he stuck around. And now that the SFA have so few refs he’s back earning his £1k a game in the SPL.

  19. bournesouprecipe – lovely decoration, thanks !

sixtaeseven – you’re quite correct to highlight that encounter. An utter embarrassment to Motherwell who were riding high at that point. Their half hearted approach was accentuated further when Inverness, Dundee Utd completely dismantled them, showing them up for the lower league outfit they are.

Consider the tackles of McCulloch on Kayal, Healy on Forrest, Lafferty on Hinkel. Pre meditated violence. Weir’s seven ankle crippling fouls on Robbie Keane before he earns a yellow.

Lasley, in my opinion is in exactly the same category as those mentioned. His record proves it. And look at the pattern. The assaults are rarely on senior pros who can take care of themselves. Pure cowardice.

I hate when ‘the he got ball’ factor is drudged out even by Celtic fans or the “full blooded but fair ” – you couldn’t do what Lasley did in a game of Rugby, even if you were hands first.

He ‘cleaned Adam Matthews out’ and Brines can’t qualify as an arbiter, after his years of embarrassment, even in the twilight of his Sevconian existence.

I find Scottish football far more civilised since the Rangers died and feel that if the government were really serious about eradicating bigotry then accepting their death would have been a good move. I will treat any future game against subsequent franchises as I would against any new club……………any new club that is which has a large number of bigots in their support

I also worked with one in the prison service, he’s still there, and met him recently at tesco at the Gow. Comes from Patna and a hun through and through and admits to being one. He does officiate at junior level though, but you wonder how he would treat a player with a timmy sounding name.

I wasn’t for a minute suggesting that you would do anything other than your own (good) conscience would dictate.

No sure if that came across in my post :-)

  30. The get the ball, wipe the player out mentality is obsolete, outdated, jurassic, embarrassing and dangerous. The Premier League’s best player this season has taken three years to recover physically and mentally from that type of challenge. Remember Shawcross on Ramsey?

That is the natural outcome when “full blooded” players launch themselves recklessly at others. Aaron Ramsey, limb half detached from the leg, tibia and fibula snapped, requiring oxygen on the turf at the age of 19, was the defining image of Stoke under Pulis.

On another note, well done Kelly Cates (Dalglish’s daughter)

Caller on 5 live asks very dismisively in discussion regarding Wanyama, what would Celtic do in EPL? Kelly responds : ” Well they qualified for group stages of CL which is more than the then EPL champions Man City”

    Bravo.
