The exceptional Celtic Movement

900

When this publishes, I should be a few kilometres into the Great Scottish Run.  These events can be humbling.  You see people there with messages on their shirts.  ‘The big C’ gets a lot of mentions, in many of its forms, as does heart disease and conditions most of us will, fortunately, be less familiar with.  Some simply have a loved one’s smiling photograph on their back.  Their former feeling of helplessness matured into purposeful action.

I’m running for Celtic Charity’s 1254125 campaign.  This is not something controlled or even organised by the club, but it is fundamental to what Celtic Football Club is.  The Celtic Movement was called together in a church hall in November 1887 to alleviate the distress of poverty in those unable to feed themselves.  It is different from other clubs because it started differently and has since walked unfamiliar roads.

The spirit to help others has been increasingly self-evident in recent years but I am sure the commitment has become more embedded as a result of 1254125.  It is now part of our routine, what we know to expect from ourselves.

We will only stay different if you and I continue to insist we walk (or run) unfamiliar roads.  We all worry about where our club is going.  There is little we can do about many potential dangers but we can make sure Celtic remains anchored to the spirit which founded it.  You can support 1254125 through the MyDonate page I setup to convince me I shouldn’t give up halfway through this run.  Your support is appreciated.

Yesterday we lost Cllr George Ryan, or St John Doyle, as he was known on these pages.  George touched the lives of hundreds of people but unless you were in direct contact, you would not know what he did for the people of Glasgow, for Celtic supporters in difficulty, or even for the Thai Tims.  He was an exceptional Celtic man who lived the way exceptional Celtic people have ever since that meeting in St Mary’s Hall.

  1. Canamalar,

I have been spending too much time following @usasoccerguy.

I should have said attacking midfielder, but then again, that could still land him in the jail:-)

I would love Celtic to never have to play those scum again. I don’t miss them, their bigotry or their hatred. If they have admin 2 and are liquidated again I will be praying they are not reincarnated.

I despair of legends who I love like Chris Sutton suggesting deep down that I miss the derby games and want them back! Total nonsense, yes I enjoyed beating them more than others but I despise them and would love to see them consigned to the dustbin of history.

I started going to Celtic games regularly in the early ’90’s as a teenager.

Shocked to find out that St. John Doyle passed away suddenly on his way home from the game yesterday. I can’t believe our chat last week will be our last. A lovely man who will be dearly missed by everybody. Condolences to the Ryan family. My thoughts are with you. RIP George. YNWA

Could we organise a tribute for the Screens at Celtic park at the Ajax game?

    Big Nan @ 10:44

I have asked the Green Brigade if they would pay tribute to George in the form of a banner at the Ajax game. I’ve also offered to supply the banner or funds to make one. They are aware of who he is and what he has done for the Celtic family. I suspect a positive response from them.

  9. Jobo, thanks.

I agree re Sevco, if and when we play them the club has to get it right, first meeting with a new club, I believe we will.

If we don’t we may be causing ourselves more problems than the Board would be thinking they are solving.

  13. I hate what thon deid team’s “followers” create in me: hate for everything they stand for. So, if they ever come to play us at Celtic Park I will absent myself. No matter how much we may be ahead of them in every way, they will still be spouting their awful repetoire. It’s all they have. Hate is all they know and it is pandered too by the Scottish Establishment.

Maybe DD could work his financial clout to our betterment and get us out of the SPFL. Anywhere has to be better than here.

  14. Have I told you Lasley, I abhor you….?

It’s a fine autumn afternoon, Celtic won yesterday, I have wine and beer on the table and a nice meal planned for later. Milan play Juve and River play Boca later on, Sundays don’t get much better.

Except I have some negative thoughts lodged in my cranium that are proving exceptionally difficult to get rid of. These thoughts revolve around the Motherwell captain Keith Lasley and our very own Adam Matthews.

I’ve watched that tackle several times now and can’t recall feeling so annoyed about a challenge one of our players since Healy’s brutal assault on James Forrest, deemed a yellow by Collum.

Lasley may be a great family man and a top guy so I cast no aspertions on his character but his displays against Celtic throughout his career have been abhorrent, which is why I detest him as a footballer. He actually has a modicum of talent, he can pass and shoot to a degree and is busy and efficient but has chosen to play the hard man.

Yesterday, he flew in recklessly on Matthews, with excessive force and while we will never know his intent, we can surmise he wasnt going for a block tackle, he was cleaning everything out. Refs are directed to give a red card for those types of challenges ie those which endanger the saftey of another player.

In addition, he took Adam first and the ball second. Our manager was correct, it was a penalty.

Now, an exceptional young talent will miss two thirds of the Champions League campaign because a journey man wanted to lay down a marker.

    Shame, shame shame.

Bit of a rant but I shall return to my Sunday evening, content that CQN often remains the best form of therapy.

There is no old firm… however I do like the Nou firm idea.

    Rangers died.

This tribute club seems destined to copy them into liquidation. …a true tribute to their erstwhile first love.

Team played really well yesterday thought Motherwell played for a draw hoping we would tire following Tuesday nights exertions against Barcelona. …never happened.

Feel Matthews is being targeted. …I’m sure Lasley has publicly apologised. …no!

Brines is an incompetent referee who’ll be allowed to referee one match disaster to the next…Dallas left nothing changed that was the true tradedy in this.

CQN truely showed it true range of society today from condolences to St John through to fund raising for charity. I myself am getting my hair shaved off in November for Prostate Cancer Scotland and really appreciate the efforts of others for good causes.

Saw during the week the anniversary meal being suggested. ..I’m interested.

Sutton is an Englishman with no experience of having to live amongst the Hun hoardes and all the issues that go along with it

His mean dealings with them was being instrumental in handing out thrashings to them …..if that was my experience I’d probably want them back too

  17. The game in Scotland has always been corrupt … I know

this because my daddy told me so….so why don’t we just

lift our ball and say we’re no playing anymore…….that’s

what they want, then they win…….my old man watched

Celtic in the fifties, me in the nineties……..the hun will

not watch a team playing second fiddle to Celtic, if we

see them off in season 16/17 their second season back

in the top tier they will desert like they did in the early eighties.

  20. Dignity eh? As Jim Royle would say “dignity my arse”

Chief Inspector Adamson of Tayside Police, had been standing in the tunnel as the half-time approached.

“When the half-time whistle went Totten came out of his dug-out very quickly and was followed by Smith,” said the chief inspector.

“Smith then deliberately shoulder-charged into Totten as they went through the double doors in the tunnel,” he added.

The two were then taken into the police detention room and shortly afterwards asked to leave the ground.

Late, excessive, purely going for the man.

Anyone remember a coupke of years ago at tyncastle, we got beat 2-0 I think. However, Joe Ledley made a full blooded challenge and won the ball. A great tackle it was but because he couldnt stop after winning the ball, perhaps referees should read about momentum, his trailing left caught the man and he was sent off. Brines I think was referee that night.

Inapproriate analogy, but I fully agree with your assessment…they shafted (to put it mildly) Scottish Football, and were consigned to the bin……..the lid needs to be kept on, for the well-being of Scottish Football…..if sevco are allowed to ‘tribute act ‘ some time in the future, I will have to consider whether I want to watch / support football, or condone vile bigotry……

When I moved to wisconsin in 2002 …the usa had a decent team playing in the world cup.

One morning I rose at 4:30 am and watched the first half of the usa v portugal match.

The portuguese golden generation got beaten by the usa that morning

When I got into work I mentioned the game and the great achievement.

The responses indicated they did not even know they had a team playing… no idea who played or the manager .

I eventually asked one guy… who played baseball, american football , basketball , ice hockey as well as deer bear and duck hunting and fishing …. how many players in each soccer team…

He thought about it for a minute then said …. 7 ?
