The exceptional Celtic Movement

900

When this publishes, I should be a few kilometres into the Great Scottish Run.  These events can be humbling.  You see people there with messages on their shirts.  ‘The big C’ gets a lot of mentions, in many of its forms, as does heart disease and conditions most of us will, fortunately, be less familiar with.  Some simply have a loved one’s smiling photograph on their back.  Their former feeling of helplessness matured into purposeful action.

I’m running for Celtic Charity’s 1254125 campaign.  This is not something controlled or even organised by the club, but it is fundamental to what Celtic Football Club is.  The Celtic Movement was called together in a church hall in November 1887 to alleviate the distress of poverty in those unable to feed themselves.  It is different from other clubs because it started differently and has since walked unfamiliar roads.

The spirit to help others has been increasingly self-evident in recent years but I am sure the commitment has become more embedded as a result of 1254125.  It is now part of our routine, what we know to expect from ourselves.

We will only stay different if you and I continue to insist we walk (or run) unfamiliar roads.  We all worry about where our club is going.  There is little we can do about many potential dangers but we can make sure Celtic remains anchored to the spirit which founded it.  You can support 1254125 through the MyDonate page I setup to convince me I shouldn’t give up halfway through this run.  Your support is appreciated.

Yesterday we lost Cllr George Ryan, or St John Doyle, as he was known on these pages.  George touched the lives of hundreds of people but unless you were in direct contact, you would not know what he did for the people of Glasgow, for Celtic supporters in difficulty, or even for the Thai Tims.  He was an exceptional Celtic man who lived the way exceptional Celtic people have ever since that meeting in St Mary’s Hall.

    Thanks for posting the video.

Surely a reminder to everyone, why they should’ve been banned from Scottish football forever and any tribute team should be no where near to a possible cup, never mind a league match against us.

  2. channelislandcelt wee oscar has done it before and he'll do it again on

It all evens itself out over time ,remember that throw in we got in 1989 cup-final :O[

I remember almost all the Celtic rangers games in my lifetime. I remember shaking with anger.I remember smashing a TV when Mahe got sent off in the game when bonkle got coined.

    All the cheating and triumphalism.

    Who wants that back?

I have a photographic memory as do almost all Celtic supporters.

    Unfortunately not all have film.

  4. I dont post often now but read a few times… A lot of talk today on the blog about us playing Sevco… If we do get them in the cup this year and we do not charge ticket prices the same as we woudl if we played Brechin I wont be there… And im not alone in that.

I was there when RH Davidson refereed the 1970 final and sent Jinky off in a q-f at Celtic Park three years later and I remember JPR Gordon in 1978 ( sure I bored a few CQNers last Sat on this topic) but that match from three and a half years ago remains the most scandalously refereed match involving Celtic I have witnessed.

I would love it in the coming years we have to play newco either in a cup match or a SPL match that we dont give them any tickets for Parkhead and if it is at Ibrokes we dont accept any tickets from them.Show them once and for all we dont need or want them.H.H.

  8. Channelislandcelt – Dougie Dougie was the ref.

Without wishing to take this in a different direction because the issue here is Lasley’s recklessness that has caused Adam to miss 75% of a CL campaign, but that video of honest mistakes is iluminating.

Firstly, at that time we were practically powerless. Games, decisions, cheating, fraud and lies just kept happening and we were on the the other end, every time.

Look at the situation now. Much improved though far from perfect, as we see with the bend over backwards attempts to accomodate and appease the neanderthals.

I have issues with John Reid which are may be beyond the scope of this blog but I am certain PL, JR and NL sat down at the start of the managers tenure and said

“We must break this and challenge at every opportunity. Neil – call out every wrong decision in every interview you conduct and we will back you, pay your fines etc.”

When you are the victim of fraud and dishonesty like that , (and that is the mildest on field example), it distorts your own personality, unless you are of a saintly disposition.

If I can sum it up like this – I feel cleaner without them.

The next challenge is to change the game in this country so that challenges like Lasley’s are utterly unnaccaptable and expressed as such by every single pundit and fan.

got a hun taxi driver on wed after barca game back to airport .he asked what i

was in glasgow for ,the game last night says i,he smiled and said will you be back up when you play us: if we have to play youse i dont think id bother.

he did worry about going into administration,i just said you want to listen to the message and not worry about who its coming from

  10. When you look at Lennys comments after Lasleys challenge yesterday, its now wonder we have a team of lightweights.

All too prepared to accept the horrific challenges as the ‘norm’ and meekly get on with it.

Time for the team to grow a spine.

  11. Greenlion2 –

that’s it in a nutshell. I wonder if our club realise that they’d get far much more long term benefit from pricing a home cup game against ‘them’ (it’s not really them – they don’t exist) at say £12 a ticket. IT would be the ultimate, subtle, demonstration of where we are as a club.

  12. Jobo… Well done today… We had a debate on it yesterday on our bus after the game…. IF and it is a big IF we play them we need to treat them as a new club in a low division

ditto, and well done on the run. I work in LanglandsEK and often see a guy running past the window wearing the hoops that wouldn’t be you would it? Or do you just play sclaffbaw up there.

While I have a lot of sympathy for young Matthews is it possible to get the football authorities to look at the incident and if they are in agreement with us for them to take retrospective action against both Brines and Lasley.I also while agreeing about all the physical abuse our players have taken from the huns without any action from the football authorities think about all the good Celtic folk who have suffered physical assaults and the ones who have been murdered over the years by the evil supporters of the deed club.H.H.

  15. Just watched the highlights, that lasley tackle is a penalty and a red card all day long.

  16. Didn’t Brines rush to get a grip of our manager when that wee nyaff McCoist riled him, as our manager extended the hand of friendship at the end of the game of shame? Showed his real colours at that moment.

  17. Right, 3 eggs today from 28 hens, 6 ducks and 2 geese. The hens are all moulting, thus very infrequent eggs, the geese are off the lay till march and the ducks will start laying regularly in february. Thankfully the hens will start laying in the next couple of months. Either that or we will have some christmas dinner. Will have enough to feed the whole of CQN. :))

Well done to the runners today.

Just watched the Lasley tackle again, deffo got Adam first, a stonewall pen and imo, a stonewall red card.

I agree with others, we need an enforcer in the team, someone who will take a card for the team, it’s a disgrace that we allow them to injure us with impunity, and what’s worse, the club saying feck all about our players getting injured.

I do play golf at Langlands fairly regularly. But It’s also one of my training runs, out Langlands drive, turn right into the wee path round the factories at ‘Bovill & Boyd Engineering’. the across the other side near Sainsbury’s distribution centre and home. Never wear hoops, but ALWAYS wear green ;-)

What Keir Hardie described as the poverty of expectation.

What I liked most about the Seville season was that our season was governed by something bigger than beating the huns. We were playing on a bigger stage and we had our eyes on a higher prize.

Why would we ever want to go back to a petty, parochial, pathetic dog fight based on nothing other than bigotry and sectarianism?

Remember the Arteta penalty and the Sutton ban on the last day?

  27. SB on Neymar incident, was amazed to her all the pundits and press say SB was ordered off because of the “Intention to foul” was present. With the tackles being put in on Celtic players I’m amazed that we manage to complete games against a full opposition eleven. You just have to watch how many tackles are made on us even after the ball has been moved on and yet no action is taken. Worst “intention”? Craig Moore came across the pitch to try and put Henrik into the crowd but Henrik saw it coming and jumped the animal’s lunge. Moore only following the tradition of thug players
