The manager more valuable as bait than a coach

429

The Newcastle United takeover is a depressing manifestation on many fronts but with some money behind them, ever-mediocre Steve Bruce’s time in charge may be coming to an end.  Bookmakers have installed one-win-in-nine-trophies expert, Steven Gerrard as their favourite.  I sincerely hope he remains in Glasgow.

When Brendan Rodgers left for Crisptown, Celtic received £9m in compensation, a fee that bridged some of the gap between Europa and Champions League money that season.  I expect Newco would receive the same for losing Gerrard.

Gerrard was perhaps saved from the sack when the league programme was curtailed in 2020 with boos from the Ibrox support as his team left the field to another defeat.  Since then, he, along with Callum Davidson at St Johnstone, have profited from Celtic’s collapse, although Davidson helped himself to twice as many trophies.  Faced with a functional and appropriately prepared Celtic, his teams have unerringly collapsed.

I see some speculation about Newco’s accounts this week (not far off my expectations).  When they are eventually released, few will argue they need a compensation figure in the region of £9m more than any player or coach at the club.  Gerrard is managerial bait.  Let’s hope Newcastle go for our old pal, Eddie Howe, currently third favourite.  They seem so well matched.

  1. Hello again all you young rebels.

Must admit I’m really surprised Lenny’s still getting it from

    Good Celtic men.

I can understand the division tactics from ONENIGHTINTHELOUDEN

but when they’re team handed from prominent bloggers on here

It smacks of low intellect and mobpsychology.

    Lenny is a legend.

  2. Mick I never said he was not a Legend but unless he is going to give us tangible’s, names etc. Its all conjecture and only harms the club at this moment in time.

It’s in the past move forward Lenny and move on.

    I hope you are well.

  6. Mick I have a lot of respect for Lenny and everything he want through in scotland and his achievements with Celtic. His latest remarks do not help us as a club trying to move forward though.

  12. You raise A good point there. We got a free kick at Pittodrie and it was the first moment that the penny dropped that we had just lost Edouard, Griffiths and Christie in the recent window.

I thought Kyogo would step up but Turnbull took it and blasted it high and wide.

At least we’ve got a replacement for Christie! :-)

  13. RE: Neil Lennon’s “fit players pulled out of games”.

I have always held the players culpable for last season’s abject surrender. Of course it is plainly obvious that there have been wrong decisions taken at CEO and board level, over the recent past. However at the outset of our 10iar season, the 9iar, soon to be quadruple-treble squad, was kept intact and added to with permanent transfers, Ajeti, Turnbull & Barkas – and temporary transfers, Duffy, Laxalt, Kenny & Elyounoussi – with transfer fees, loan fees and wages, that investment was approaching £15m+. What more could the CEO & board have done to ensure our continued success at that juncture?

What we saw was a lack of diligence and motivation from players in what was to have been a history-making season.

Now, if what NL says is true, not only were some players incompetent, they were also bent.

Pretty sure the documentary has been mentioned on here a few times, but for those that might be able to go, think there are tickets still available for “The Three Kings” by Johnny Owen at the St Lukes Venue in the Calton on Wednesday 13 October. Have not seen it myself, and but do remember watching a similar doc. on BBC some years back, narrated if I am not mistaken by Hugh McIlvanney. Sounds like it will be worth taking in.

    CELTIC

  24. 8 goals in 11 official games. Japan national team FW Kyogo Furuhashi, who joined Scotland’s prestigious Celtic in July, is in great shape. He has been out of the line for the past three weeks due to his injury in the World Cup Asian final qualifying match against China on September 7, but when he returns to the Europa League (EL) Leverkusen match on September 30, Scottish on October 3・ In the Premiership Round 8 match against Avateen, he contributed to the league victory for the first time in three games with the first goal. An additional call to the Japan national team has been announced ahead of the match against Saudi Arabia and Australia.

The attacker to attract attention as the hottest exist now, Mr. Takashi commentator, Mizunuma under Japan representative has been hit (all two of the prequel / sequel to)

※ The interview was conducted on September 27, which was ahead of the return ..

Mizunuma Thank you for your time today! Thank you for being interviewed from the morning. What time do you always practice?

Furuhashi I was looking forward to it! The morning practice always starts at 10:30 and I go to the clubhouse around 9am. It’s like having breakfast and then practicing.

The Mizunuma club will prepare it for you. It’s really big (laughs). I was very relieved to hear that I was steadily recovering from my knee injury. Have you got used to living in Scotland?

Furuhashi All of them are kind and support me so that I can do it easily, including my personal life. The facilities are large, clean and well-equipped.

Mizunuma That’s encouraging. How about the language?

Furuhashi I’m studying. I feel that I’ve been able to communicate little by little, but even when I’m still asking, “What are you talking about?” (Laughs). I’m trying my best to hit the words I know so that they can be understood. The people around me talk to me really kindly, so that’s the salvation.

Was it quick to get used to the team in Mizunuma ? Even if you look at the video of the game, you can see how it blends into the team.

Furuhashi At first, I was confused. I flew from Japan and had a 10-day quarantine in London, but the day after the quarantine was the match, and the opening match of the league (July 31st was against Hearts). However, I was told that I would suddenly enter the bench … I hadn’t practiced yet, and it was the first time I met my teammates at lunch on the day of the match (laughs). I was very nervous because I thought too much about who I was thinking, “Who is that guy?”

Mizunuma It was hard because I wouldn’t have been able to train properly during the isolation period.

Furuhashi I’m glad I brought my bike into the room, but it was hard (laughs). On that day, I didn’t know the flow until the match, and it was difficult to remember the names of allies. Anyway, the feeling that I have to win the trust by playing one point became stronger.

Mizunuma Did that thought lead to a “start dash”?

Furuhashi responded to the interview the morning before the practice. The facial expressions also convey the fulfillment (all local photos are provided by the office).

    See all photos (19)

How about Furuhashi (laughs)? At the opening round, I felt like I was “no way”, but at the same time, I was happy that I was expected that much. I couldn’t do anything in the middle of the match, but in the next match (European League qualifying round 3 and Jablonec), I played in the starting lineup and scored a goal. My heart was clear and I finally felt like I was on the starting line.

[Next page] The city is full of Celtic supporters

  25. Mizunuma Celtic is a well-known club in Japan as a club where a legend named Shunsuke Nakamura played an active part, but the local supporters are also enthusiastic.

The first match of Furuhashi Home (against Dundee United on August 8) wasn’t full, but there were still a huge number of supporters and I got goose bumps. I received great support in Japan as well, but I felt that I could smile naturally, or that the stadium was full of support. I was watching the games from above because I was off the bench in the last few games, but I thought it was a great atmosphere again.

Hat-trick suddenly in the first match of Mizunuma Home. This is another great debut (laughs).

Furuhashi (home stadium) Celtic Park is full with about 60,000 people. The moment you step on the pitch, the power is transmitted and it makes you think that you can do it yourself.

Can you call out in Mizunuma ? (smile)

Furuhashi There are Celtic supporters everywhere, so I’m happy to say that many people are saying, “Take a picture!” And “How are you doing?” Not only the customers who come to shop, but also the security guards who work there ask for a photo shoot because of their work, and even if they are driving a car, they honking their horns and calling their names. Many people wear uniforms as plain clothes, so the atmosphere around them has a different appeal from Japan.

    I just say “boss” (laughs)

Director Mizunuma is Ange Postecoglou, who is familiar in the J League. In the days of Yokohama F. Marinos, players called him a “boss”, but what about Scotland?

Furuhashi Everyone calls them “managers”. I was listening to the story in Marinos, so I often just say “boss” (laughs).

I heard that the practice of Director Mizunuma Postecoglou is quite hard.

Furuhashi: It’s hard, but now when the match starts, there are only two days between them, and the schedule is recovery → adjustment → match. I haven’t experienced a week with no matches on the middle of the day, so I’m wondering what would happen if the match was only on Saturdays and Sundays.

During the Marinos Mizunuma era, Postecoglou was the type who looked at the practice from a bird’s-eye view, or left the details to the coach.

Furuhashi I think it’s the same with Celtic. It feels like you’re at a certain distance from the players.

Mizunuma High Press & High Line Possession Soccer A director who aims for a very unique soccer. I think there are detailed instructions on where to stand, but did you have any confusion around that?

At the Furuhashi meeting, the area is harshly said, but it seems that everyone is having fun rather than being confused. I think the atmosphere is very good. I myself was competing in the J-League, and I was entrusted with a position close to the goal, so it’s not that difficult. It’s simple to defend and move on the front line.

[Next page] Iniesta made aware of “bargaining”

  26. Mizunuma (Odsonne) Edouard, a player who was also a partner and a rival, was transferred (to the Crystal Palace of the Premier League on September 1st). I explained his premier debut match, but he was surprised at how he suddenly scored two goals. I was surprised that there are many such powerful players in Scotland.

Furuhashi: He and I are of different types, so sometimes it would be helpful if they were there, and on the contrary, there were times when I wanted to be one-top, so it’s complicated (laughs). There are many players from Scotland who challenge the premiere every year, and there are many powerful players. I think it’s a very exciting league.

Physically strong as a whole. It’s very rugged and the ball is fierce. It is normal for people to step on or be scraped from practice. In the scene where you carry your opponent on your back in a match, you are mercilessly grabbed or pinched, so it’s sly, or that kind of thing is good. I try to shake it off well and play things that my opponent dislikes so as not to get on the provocation.

Mizunuma: Have you been aware of such tactics such as starting to move and removing the opponent since you were in Japan?

Furuhashi (in Kobe) From this season, more and more people are using it in FW, and I’ve become more aware of “bargaining”.

Mizunuma If anything, Furuhashi is the type that makes the most of it. Of course, I also have a dribble to break through, but after all there was a big passer such as (Andres) Iniesta?

Furuhashi (FC) In the days of Gifu, there was a strong awareness that the ball would be received at the feet and dribbled into the goal. There were times when it worked in J1 and times when it didn’t. At the same time, Andres joined Kobe and played with him, and I found the feeling that a pass would come if I moved like this, and I was able to see the “correct answer” and “road” within myself.

He also said, “Because I’m watching, I’ll start moving,” and if I’m well prepared, I’ll get a pass (laughs). (Iniesta) was always weak in practice, and the world he was looking at was different. Every time I was surprised, “Wow, I put it out” and “Do you want to pass it?” (Laughs)

After playing with David Villa, a great example, for a year, I was able to learn the quality of movement, bargaining in front of the goal, and shooting patterns. I wondered if I could see and study and think about it with my head, and now I can do it without thinking naturally.

“Unknowingly it was my greatest strength.”

It ’s interesting that Mizunuma Dribbler turns into a recipient. Moreover, the fact that the body reacts without thinking is evidence that it has reached a considerable level. I used to like dribbling when I was active, but in the game I thought it would be easier to get behind the opponent than to dribble. Furuhashi felt that he was gradually changing and growing.

Furuhashi Positioning is vital because he is not a big player. I think it’s a move with my teammates, so I’ve come to think that keeping moving and communicating is the fastest way to get results.

I’m often asked, “Why can you start moving like that?”, But honestly, there are many parts that move with a sense (laughs). Of course, I sometimes take positions while thinking, but I believed in my intuition. It feels like it has become my strongest point and strength before I knew it.

Photo courtesy of SPORTS & LIFE

Mizunuma Furuhashi can take a short through pass or take a long pass behind him. This is also a strength. Which one do you like better? (smile)

Furuhashi I like both of them (laughs). Anyway, I just need to reach the goal, so I don’t really know which one. After that, as I keep moving, the opponent’s defender line will also go down, so I can give space to the players who can receive the ball at their feet and demonstrate their abilities. There are many good players in both the team and the national team, so I’m working muddy to make the most of them.
