The Men who sold the Jerseys, Geordie-hostility-feeder

889

Congratulations to Mark Daly and the BBC production team behind The Men who sold the Jerseys, who received the award from the Royal Television Society for Best regions current affairs and news event for their documentary into the goings-on in the years before Rangers descended into liquidation.  They won against Grananda’s Hillsborough – The Truth At Last, which centred on a hugely important human and political story, which illustrates the standard of achievement.

Television journalist of the year

Congratulations also to Alex Thomson, of Chanel 4 News, “one of the UK’s leading correspondents. With a portfolio of coverage from Syria to door stepping Kelvin Mackenzie over Hillsborough, to Glasgow Rangers, he displays great range and versatility with a knack for finding strong angles and compelling stories. He brings real authority and storytelling skills to whatever he covers.”

Thomson is a game changer.  Never has a UK journalist had so many people wanting him to stop asking questions, including many in his own industry.  Fortunately he appears to be some kind of Geordie-hostility-feeder.

Good journalism is important. Well done to the winners and those in their support teams.

  1. Just dropping in to say how interesting I’ve found the political debate yesterday and this morning. Even the arguments I’ve disagreed with have for the most part been enlightening (well played Ernie Lynch ).

For my part, I’m passionately uncommitted. I detest the Tories at Westminster, well anywhere for that matter, but I have very little time

for Salmond and Sturgeon. If I’m of an independent bent, where does my Socialist vote go? Why does it seem like the S.N.P. have monoplised, hijacked even, the independence argument? There must be a huge constituency out there leaning towards separation but outwith the S.N.P. banner.

Maybe thats where my thinking is wrong. If the electorate vote yes in the referendum there will no longer be a need for the S.N.P. Their reason for being will be lost.

Tempting, but I’m still decisively undecided.

  2. The proposal is that Scotland become an independent country. Surely everyone who lives in Scotland should have a say? They are affected by the outcome. People who live elsewhere are not.

And that’s before we get to the practicalities of deciding exactly who is a Scot and eligible to vote. Are we using the grandparent rule like in international football? How about someone born elsewhere but who has lived all but a few months in Scotland – would they be barred? Yet someone born here who has lived almost all their life abroad could vote? Makes no sense to me.

I am undecided though the constant barrage of ‘protect the union’ and ‘better together’ from the grasping Tories and their camp followers makes me think there is something in it for them – given their track record, if there is something in it for them it will not be in the interests of the rest of us.

I only meant that those two women constantly look borderline enraged as do men in those parties but they are the leaders after all. They look like they’ve been told that CBeebies has been cancelled for the day shall we say.

Plenty folk call Alex Salmond Bawface on here regularly and yes he ain’t no oil painting either but he is streets ahead of those two and Willie Rennie will be moving uneasily at the next election as will all Lib Dems.

I didn’t meet too many Nats who thought McGeady a “traitor” but I did meet a few fans of other clubs who did (I have no idea of their political allegiances).

‘And just to ask you again – why does my living in Slovakia explain a lot?’

It’s the fact that you’re not living in Scotland that explains a lot, not that you’re living in Slovakia.

You can’t properly judge or get a feel for the zeitgeist if you’re not living here.

Your assumption that the last Holyrood election was a result of Labour voters switching en masse to the SNP is an illustration of that.

Holyrood isn’t held in particularly high esteem. The turnout for Holyrood elections is typically 10% less than for Westminster (a factor that favours the nats).

Lamont and Davidson aren’t most people’s idea of a pin up, but neither is Sturgeon. The truth is Holyrood is fairly second rate. The only heavyweight there is Salmond and he’s only there by force of circumstances. He’d rather be at Westminster.

In the over all scheme of things the Glasgow Uni thing is utterly irrelevant, though the nat response is interesting. They had obviously been pinning their hopes on a yes vote, and they seem to have invested a lot of resources in campaigning.

Bonnie Prince Charlie – I think as many Highlanders fought against him as for him. A Frenchman.

Sir Walter Scott. From the south, not the east, I believe.

Miss Jean Brodie – a fictional character with sympathies for Mussolini. James Connolly also from Auld Reekie.

Rabbie’s father from Aberdeenshire. A man for all Scots.

More at home in the US – OK if your skin is white.

I wouldn’t take your late pal as a reliable guide to Scottish politics.

  9. If Scotland is to be independent then it should be the whole hog not a watered down version. I believe we will still have the pound and still be run by England. The Scottish parliament is a good indicator of how much sway they have in the country. It’s full of people who wouldn’t last ten minutes in Westminster. It all seems to be a waste of time and money to me. The SNP will pump millions into their campaign. I don’t see the majority voting for it. It really depends who turns out on the day tho. Lots of people will be against it and not vote but everyone for it will vote. Interesting times!

The logical conclusion of what you are saying is that what matters most is class, not national, interest.

The nat idea that everyone living in Scotland has the same interests just because they live in Scotland is one I find hard to square with my experience of life.

  11. Snake that reply was more humorous and balanced.

You are right, Salmond gets personal criticism about his jowly appearance too, probably from equally unprepossessing types like myself. However there does seem to be a different overtone by which female politicians are often judged.

I am actually wary of attractive looking politicians. The smoothness of a Blair or Cameron can cover up a lack of depth that a non-looker like Roy Hattersley, Gordon Brown or Ken Clarke would not be allowed to get away with.

If two politicians are of fairly equal merit, in your judgement, vote for the uglier one, I would say.

I doubt UEFA will throw Lazio out of the EL. Take into account that Roma fans were amongst the group who attacked Spurs fans last year, and its fair to say that Rome is the problem.

UEFA should start by moving Lazio’s home game against Stuttgart a few hundred miles from Rome.

  13. Ok I’m undecided and require convincing.

Should I have gone with the Y fronts or the thong this morning?

  14. jinkyredstar .

His point —- talking @ 67 /68 was that the thing called Scotland was a place that didn’t suit him [ or me ] Too hung up on what school did you go to / what foot you kicked with / 1690 / King Billy / Moira Anderson / Kenneth Mckellar / the team you ran with Ya Bass . Felt small / parochial / limited in opportunity . A feeling that the world was out there . A feeling of restlessness / a feeling of not belonging / a feeling of frustration..

I left in 1968 [ went back regularly to see family /friends /Celtic] Returned to live there in the 80’s /90s . Didn’t like it / it felt the same . I left in 1999 . .I still go to see people / I still don’t like it . My thing / my feeling . Subjective and personal.

  15. The independence debate is quite interesting, but have been away for almost forty years, I do not feel Scottish/ British even though I was born in Glasgow of Irish parents.

I always felt at home in Ireland when ever I was there but I never vote, never have done and never will. “Do not put your trust in earthling man to whom it does not belong, it does not belong to him even to direct his own step”

If you look at the state of the world never a truer word was said, although on a more positive note I believe there is at least a little good in all parties, yes, even tories but when they get into power it all goes belly up. Nationalism and politics, I listen but dont get involved as feelings are too entrenched. HH

Thank you for that correction. I don’t think it invalidates the general point I was making, however.

  17. I’ll vote but in contemporary politics I find it an arduous and depressing experience.

I think politicians and I think liars.

The sooner we get to a state where our elected representatives consider their constituents before their hardy perennials the better for all concerned.

I remember when John Smith died.

I was sitting in the pub with my mate and we were both in the union, so we had to vote for a new leader. I was for Prescott and he was all for Blair.

The argument raged all day and as the drink flowed we nearly came to blows.

I met him again weeks later….we discovered that he voted for John and I voted for Tony (to my eternal shame)

This vote isn’t for yonks, there is plenty of time to get SFTB and ernie to be the vanguards of a brave new dawn.

completely back your position on who should and shouldn’t vote in the referendum. It is not a vote for Scots but for the people of Scotland those eligible to vote in Scotland. Makes perfect sense to me anaw.

If I were the SNP strategist I would have a simple ploy…get repeats of Miranda replayed on the BEEB constantly interspliced with the pontifications of Jackie Baillie.

    Surely a game changing combination?

Am living ootside Scotland at the moment, due to work commitments, but ah will be living back in Scotland in 2015….

    I certainly want my vote!!!

I do understand the frustration regarding the Sean Connery’s of this world, who’re never in the country, but campaign for independence…

The reality is, in today’s world Scots follow work around the world oan a temporary basis..

Coming and going from the homeland, and we’ll want oor right to vote…

    Clearly we do.

Craig and Charlie’s question is, in fact, ‘why do we have to roam the world to prove how much it hurts?’

  30. jduffy132,

I understand your point – but how could it be regulated? People born in Scotland who plan to come back at some unspecified time? Anyone who has lived in Scotland for more than x years? What about someone born in England who lived most of their life in Scotland but has now moved away?
