The Men who sold the Jerseys, Geordie-hostility-feeder

889

Congratulations to Mark Daly and the BBC production team behind The Men who sold the Jerseys, who received the award from the Royal Television Society for Best regions current affairs and news event for their documentary into the goings-on in the years before Rangers descended into liquidation.  They won against Grananda’s Hillsborough – The Truth At Last, which centred on a hugely important human and political story, which illustrates the standard of achievement.

Television journalist of the year

Congratulations also to Alex Thomson, of Chanel 4 News, “one of the UK’s leading correspondents. With a portfolio of coverage from Syria to door stepping Kelvin Mackenzie over Hillsborough, to Glasgow Rangers, he displays great range and versatility with a knack for finding strong angles and compelling stories. He brings real authority and storytelling skills to whatever he covers.”

Thomson is a game changer.  Never has a UK journalist had so many people wanting him to stop asking questions, including many in his own industry.  Fortunately he appears to be some kind of Geordie-hostility-feeder.

Good journalism is important. Well done to the winners and those in their support teams.

All fair points, but the lack of ethics in banking was far from confined to Edinburgh. Perhaps, for the reasons you give, it’s a surprise that the irresponsibility took root there so strongly.

Have you written anything about the referendum on your blog recently? If so, I really would appreciate a link to it please

There is a reason I said what I said, it is very personal, it involves the Catholic Faith. My God Almighty, Thank you for Catholic schools.

Get my email from anyone that has it and I will explain it. I talked about it at the first moonhowlers convention.

Can we include a voting mechanism on posts………..?

It would be very interesting to see where the body politic of CQN ‘ers agrees with topics. posts and posters

Much of what you say is validly observed, but I’m afraid you may have (somewhat!) overestimated the role of the Scot Gov in the abuses and scandals carried out by the banks, not least because:

    a) Scot Gov has no control over the sector at any level

    b) Banks the world over behaved the same way

Got to agree about Downtown Abbey…but I like Question Time.

Loved Fawlty Towers but also love….Red Dwarf, The Young Ones, New Statesman and The Thick of It (which surely is a sitcom…but of course written by a Scot/Italian).

  7. HT what have you got against Burns, so he liked the wine, women and song. Reminds me of a youthful bhoy from Maryhill.

Agreed but from what I read on Who Runs Britain Gordon Brown and other UK Parliament ministers of Scottish extraction played their part.

On the co puzzling point of forgetting thrift do you think that a generation brought up on a richer diet than their parents thought there would always be plenty or were just fed up with what their parents had told them?

    It is a strange one.

They sorted that out, the banks I mean. They are properly regulated now…..aren’t they?

If the best solution is to keep tied in to the City of London as the economic fail safe, just because we can’t trust ourselves then we really are a shower who deserve anything the tories can throw at us.

    imo ;)

I’ve spent most of my adult life in England, since Jan 87 (Celtic were about a dozen points clear at the time,we blew it without me!)

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed most of my time down here, and to be honest, there is little that I miss about it-barring the obvious of family, friends and football.

    And skwerr sausage,wi proper rolls……

Beats the hell outa me why I get so depressed for about six weeks after I’ve been up for a visit, then had to say my goodbyes!

IMO,we have had second-rate politicians in Holyrood-with a few honourable exceptions-from Day One. I see nothing to be gained for people like me by voting for independence, just as I saw nothing to be gained by voting for devolution.

When I was a kid,my Dad voted for an MP and a councillor, who would represent him where it mattered.

Now,I think he has about twenty people representing his interests.

None of them do it for free. Bin the lotta them, start from scratch. One councillor and one MP-be it Holyrood or Westminster. No timeservers and timewasters.

First party to propose that gets my vote.

Circumstance means I haven’t escaped the man — I play chess with a Russian who is very big on Burns [ He can recite the stuff ! ]. Last Birthday he gave me a framed sheet of 50 USSR stamps featuring Rabbie …[ It isn’t on a wall yet ]

  15. As I looked down the 100 feet or so to my opponents ball sitting 10 feet from the cup at the 14th par 3 at the Carrick….I told him it was very VERY much beatable. At 175 yards in length my usual choice of weapon would be a 5 iron, but, allowing for the height difference, I thought, on this occasion I’ll use a 6 iron. Allowing for the brisk, freezing cold breeze coming in from the right across the loch I went for the green between the flag and the right hand side of the green. Using a lower than normal trajectory I thought, and, allowing for said wind, a full bloodied swing at the ball should send it right of centre, then, allowing for the wind, it should ease its way left and towards the flag. After explaining this strategy to my opponent, and, the fact that there was 4 quid riding on the nearest the pin shot, he took on board everything I had to say. He responded with….”Jist get F*%”in oan wi it”. We watched in anticipation as the ball sailed through the air. Passing crows and seagulls followed its flight in awe. The ball landed about 2 feet past the hole the spun back about 7 feet leaving it 5 feet from the hole. The shot was exactly as I described it. As I turned to receive the warm congratulations (and the 4 bangers) my opponent had already left the tee and was half way down the hill, momentarily looking back to say..”Ya lucky bassa”…..Who said there’s such a thing as golfing etiquette?

What exactly is this cabal you play chess with? African priests, Russian philatelists, Glaswegian persimmon farmers … what is going on?

DBBIA paid a brief visit just after the Juventus game. He said he had missed us, but then I think he gave the blog up for Lent, which is just so Lent 2010 it’s unreal.

We we’re at the Hampden St Mirren reverse with ole DBBIA and he was in fine form, but disappointed that the league had not yet progressed to Celtic ‘bounce’ proportions.

He was eagerly anticipating the ‘unleasing of the Bangura’.

The devil you know and the devil you do’nt.

For all its faults it was the tie to the City that kept our atms supplying cash in late 2008.

Of course its a scandal that covered the nation but before walking the independence high wire I would want to know what steps are being taken to protect pensions and public sector pay.

When former colonies gained independence steps were taken to protect the pensions of those working (in effect for Britain) in the colonial service, some ex pats some locals.

    Cost a few bob too.

Have not read the independence plans to do so but given the risks there has to be some planning to mitigate them.

No doubt someone will enlighten me.

To trust folk there has to be some evidence that the trust is not simply hope, as I have said at central and local government level Im not impressed.

Another generation (and that seems to be in good hands from your own story) maybe but not now.
