The Men who sold the Jerseys, Geordie-hostility-feeder

889

Congratulations to Mark Daly and the BBC production team behind The Men who sold the Jerseys, who received the award from the Royal Television Society for Best regions current affairs and news event for their documentary into the goings-on in the years before Rangers descended into liquidation.  They won against Grananda’s Hillsborough – The Truth At Last, which centred on a hugely important human and political story, which illustrates the standard of achievement.

Television journalist of the year

Congratulations also to Alex Thomson, of Chanel 4 News, “one of the UK’s leading correspondents. With a portfolio of coverage from Syria to door stepping Kelvin Mackenzie over Hillsborough, to Glasgow Rangers, he displays great range and versatility with a knack for finding strong angles and compelling stories. He brings real authority and storytelling skills to whatever he covers.”

Thomson is a game changer.  Never has a UK journalist had so many people wanting him to stop asking questions, including many in his own industry.  Fortunately he appears to be some kind of Geordie-hostility-feeder.

Good journalism is important. Well done to the winners and those in their support teams.

  1. weeminger,

I think most people have a special pride & affection toward their own city.

Not that they think it is better than anywhere else, but it is simply their familiarity with it.

Like our family or our long-standing friends.

    Somehow it is ‘ours’.

  2. Fair response Snake.

I do not think Alex Salmond was wrong to launch the referendum campaign. After 40 years since the last one and a good election victory, it was a good time to have a try. As it turned out, we recently voted heavily for the SNP because they were not Gordon Brown’s party and they were not Tories but we did not vote heavily for them because we wanted Independence.

The desire for an “independent” Scotland remains a minority choice but it is a sizeable minority. I would not like to predict future trends on whether Nationalist sympathy will rise or fall, as we live in unpredictable times.

The demographics of the student vote may be interesting but I doubt they will be encouraging for your viewpoint.

  3. Scottish Independence

Some of the greatest proponents of it are Scots who dont live in Scotland

Perhaps they’ve forgotten the reality of living here

Oh I know, and I could probably right an essay on the reasons why on the whole the concept means nothing to me.

If I decide to vote Yes, it’ll certainly not be out of a sense of nationalistic pride. I’ve a nasty feeling it’ll come down to which is the least worst option.

    SFTBs

I’d buy into that. Labour let down so many traditional voters that the SNP got in. I think the road to Independence will be far longer but to expect it a mere 15 years after Devolution I would be a hell of a lot to ask.

I think it will be another 30 years. Had the economic crash not come about though I believe things would have been very different.

    Nothing personal mate ….

Incidentally I wasn’t singling you out ….it’s a fairly common position

Btw I have regular arguments with my 16 year old daughter ….I can appreciate why the SNP want that age group to vote …

  8. weeminger,

I have never had a nationalistic thought in my head in my life.

The idea of one nationality or religion being better than another offends me.

    Good luck.

If Ally McLeod in 78 had not messed up so badly, the 79 result would have been a lot more positive (and yes I know it was a majority Yes vote).

We still have a lot of football based Nationalism. Margo McDonald thinks that is a bad thing. I’m not so sure.

I’ve said this before (and it’s obviously wrong) but I do get a sense that the main players want the exact opposite of what they’re campaigning on.

Salmond – SNP in an independent Scotland, lack of purpose and likely to lose overall power. Non independence, people will keep them in power to keep Westminster at bay.

Cameron – would love to be shot of us. Get rid of Scotland and get the constituency borders redefined, could see the Tories in power a lot more often.

Milliband/Labour – bit of split here. I think Labour in Scotland would like to return to what people remember the Labour party being. That won’t happen without independence. Main party like the seats but would probably benefit from being able to concentrate.

Lib Dems – don’t care cause they’ve utterly shafted themselves by being spineless, and know they’ve no hope anywhere.

Bundoran Bhoy – Wee Oscar 4 Life Campaign, I’m hoping to save this item for an auction rather than a raffle. It’s a very special and unique single cask single malt, and its bottle No. 001 of 251 (a rare wee item as well as a cracking dram). If you can get my details from P67 drop me a line and I’ll give you the details and you can let me know when best to maximise the benefit to the wee chap.

A few of our esteemed posters have sampled said dram previously and have already made generous contributions to the cause. If you have details for BMCUWP, Jungle Jim or As_I_Thought, they will give opinion on the contents. Hopefully all favorable too :-)

I’d rather not install QuickTime, a very bad program for a PC the last time I used it. It really was a very obtrusive bit of software, since it is Apple, I doubt it will have changed much.

Thanks for posting. You usually come up with the good stuff and you have not let yourself down with this one.

As you say, bribes and backmail openly discussed by Turnbull.

The real education for me, was the open and honest way he allowed this discussion to be recorded and quoted both financial and documented facts on league reconstruction discussions.

This guy is really a breath of fresh air.

Why don’t we post podcasts of fans groups meetings with the board? ( or do we? ). Would make it all very transparent and as fans ourselves there would be no security issue.

Fholks, if you haven’t listened to this I urge you to do so. Apart from anything else it is how a clubs CEO should be communicating with the supporters through all available medium.

I doubt they want that in any Machiavellian sense but a lot of them do come across as not having their heart fully behind their argument so I can understand your scepticism.

I started off taking offence at jibes that the “No” voters were feart but now I am making a virtue of this so called cowardice.

It is a good time to be scared. There are a lot of bad economic signs out there. I am not fervently anti-nationalist, believe it or not. I just see it a wee bit like league construction in that it is being proposed with a good heart and a belief that it will make things better but that it is not addressing any of the underlying issues that will make life better, such as how to overcome a 3 goal deficit in the CL.

I’m not really sure what he meant either but then I don’t really identify myself by a location on any level. It’s not something I really understand. If people I ask where I’m form, I’m happy to tell them but it’s not something that defines me, or that I take any sense of pride in.

    —–

Am not a fan of nationalism myself, but on reading back it seems many of the opposing arguments are all denying nationalism – this is good imo, and shows a lesson learned from history, in the face of MSM trying to propagate it.

But in reference to “pride of place”, I was enlighted a few weeks ago after hearing a fellow Tim tell me about the history of Govan.

If your family are born in a particular place, it’s surely inevitable (by traditional standards) to feel gratitude for your predecessors who have worked that land and made it into an accommodating area for future generations.

This might explain why communities are proud of their own units, and locations. Nationalism is different; it’s more feudal. How can one government represent all these communities? The answer is it can’t perfectly.

But a decent one would do a lot better than any of the crowd of charlatans currently claiming to do so!

The closest Scotland came to genuine unity was back at the start of the 20th Century; but that threat was quickly extinguished by the UK govt by applying the divide and conquer rule. Break up the workers’s unity in central Scotland (AND the North East and Highlands !) by going for the jugular. Glasgow. The Ship Building. Harland & Wolf. Rangers. The rest is history.

In the meantime, other men with better values embraced the idea of unity, and CONTINUED to build on what Brother Walfrid et al had created.

  25. weeminger @ 00:55

That’s another very interesting angle amigo, especially when you look at the communities who were forced to move on continually through the years, decades and centuries.

But it also give you an uncommon objective view on the values people are placing on inherited community and nationalism.

And the way the world is going, something I’m a big fan of, inter-cultural, inter-racial, AND inter-religious, can all only be a brilliant thing, as long as we don’t allow the power-brokers to continue manipulating us by using these differences.

I think you and your family are maybe more important to the future than you might realise. Or maybe you do already!
