The Men who sold the Jerseys, Geordie-hostility-feeder

889

Congratulations to Mark Daly and the BBC production team behind The Men who sold the Jerseys, who received the award from the Royal Television Society for Best regions current affairs and news event for their documentary into the goings-on in the years before Rangers descended into liquidation.  They won against Grananda’s Hillsborough – The Truth At Last, which centred on a hugely important human and political story, which illustrates the standard of achievement.

Television journalist of the year

Congratulations also to Alex Thomson, of Chanel 4 News, “one of the UK’s leading correspondents. With a portfolio of coverage from Syria to door stepping Kelvin Mackenzie over Hillsborough, to Glasgow Rangers, he displays great range and versatility with a knack for finding strong angles and compelling stories. He brings real authority and storytelling skills to whatever he covers.”

Thomson is a game changer.  Never has a UK journalist had so many people wanting him to stop asking questions, including many in his own industry.  Fortunately he appears to be some kind of Geordie-hostility-feeder.

Good journalism is important. Well done to the winners and those in their support teams.

    ‘SFTBs

I’d buy into that. Labour let down so many traditional voters that the SNP got in.’

The figures don’t support that line of thought.

In 2007 Labour got 648,000 first votes.

    The SNP got 664,000

    In 2011 Labour got 630,00

    The SNP got 902,000

So the Labour vote went down a wee bit (18,000) but the SNP’s went up by a huge amount (238,000).

So who switched to vote SNP?

    Here’s a clue.

In 2007 the LibDems got 326,000 first choice votes.

    In 2011 they got 157,000, a decrease of 169,000.

In 2007 the Tories got 334,000 first votes.

    In 2011 they got 276,000, a decrease of 58,000.

So the Labour vote went down a little bit and the SNP’s went up by about the same as the Lib Dems and the Tories went down.

So rather than people deserting Labour for the SNP it looks more like Tory and LibDems switched to the SNP.

And all on a 50% turnout. Which is probably the most significant figure of them all when taking the political temperature of the country.

I suggested some weeks ago that might be the outcome.

I don’t know which of us should be more concerned that we’re thinking along similar lines.

The findings in fact are beyond dispute now. Players had a contract in two parts: The FIFA prescribed form of contract; and a Side Letter detailing additional payments. That is public record.

The issue for LNS is not did this occur, but:

    1) Did it break the rules as applicable at the time?

    2) If so, is there any mitigation?

    3) Following which, what if any sanctions are appropriate?

I expect that because the rule book changed quite markedly throughout the period that the sanctions will be different for the same offence committed at different times.

For instance, while it was a requirement to submit all contractual details to SFA/SPL from 2000 onwards, only since 2005 has failing to do so resulted in the player being automatically deemed ineligible.

I doubt we’ll see anything from LNS for some time yet though.

I still think there is some scope for obfuscation and prestidigitation over the question of whether loans constitute payments, should the good lord wish to deploy his undoubted talents in that way.

  19. Life is funny eh.

The SNP now in complete denial about their inability to win an independence referendum and they are doing what they always do. Blame the people who vote.

As are some of the poeple on this site who’s belief is clearly – democracy is good but only if you vote the way I want you to vote. Scotland has latent anti catholic tendancies – why would I ever want to live in an independent scotland?

And it seems that most people in scotland agree with me!

But I guess to you nats that makes us dumb/gullible/annoying etc etc.

  20. It’s all about the independence vote these days.

  21. Ernie Lynch

well that would support the old adage that if you put a broom with a red balloon cellotaped to it with a Labour badge then the ma Da voted Labour mob would still vote for it.

I do think that things like one of the safest seats in the East End rejecting Labour in one recent bi-election is enough to suggest people are in some ways annoyed with Labour.

The Iraq war was one reason why a lot of people were turned off by them.

Scotland at general election votes Labour en masse because of fear of Tories I think we’d both agree on that. The SNP whatever you think of them are an alternative to the other parties at least within the Holyrood Parliament. Labour for me thought they had the Scottish Parliament in their pocket forever and their disdainful aggressive ways at FMQs every week show how truly bitter they are. Johann Lamont has a face only a mother could love on payday and she and Ruth Davidson look like someone has permanently skelped them and they canny remove the surliness.

I see that the returning officer at the mock election has said that he estimates the majority of voters were indeed Scots eligible to vote next year but clearly some voters came from other groups – English, European and possibly non-European students. The actual numbers were not stated but that’s what the guy said. I also do not know why they’d bother but some clearly did. How much of a difference that would have made I really don’t know but it is interesting that the same criteria for the actual referendum was not applied to this mock one.

I don’t see how it can be judged properly without applying the same rules. I think that’s a fair criticism. Scots living outside Scotland don’t get a say in this (which I think is a difficult issue to be honest).

And just to ask you again – why does my living in Slovakia explain a lot? Do you know about or have some issue with Slovak politics (I know I have a few but I cannot vote on it). The only elections I can vote for over here are for the local mayor.

  22. LiviBhoy,

I can’t see there being any threshold or Cunningham Rule (the 40% rule from way back). Don’t forget that the SNP has a majority in the Scottish Parliament so they write the rules – and why would they make it harder for themselves?

    No.

Voter apathy is a serious issue, across the board.

It could be addressed easily enough by making attendance at the polling station (though not voting) compulsory, but no party seems to have an appetite for that.

“Johann Lamont has a face only a mother could love on payday and she and Ruth Davidson look like someone has permanently skelped them and they canny remove the surliness.”

Fairly irrelevant and borderline sexism. Alex Salmond may be, mostly, a canny politician, but he would win few beauty contests.

As for the demographics of the student vote, few Non-Scots would be bothered to vote down independence. I expect the vote in the real referendum to be in broadly similar ratios to the student vote.

I agree with the SNP policy of letting non-Scots, who are resident in Scotland, vote in the referendum. It fair rips the knitting of some of the “Sturm und Drang” nationalists though. That smaller grouping of Nats were the epitome of what Aiden McGeady suffered.
