The Men who sold the Jerseys, Geordie-hostility-feeder

889

Congratulations to Mark Daly and the BBC production team behind The Men who sold the Jerseys, who received the award from the Royal Television Society for Best regions current affairs and news event for their documentary into the goings-on in the years before Rangers descended into liquidation.  They won against Grananda’s Hillsborough – The Truth At Last, which centred on a hugely important human and political story, which illustrates the standard of achievement.

Television journalist of the year

Congratulations also to Alex Thomson, of Chanel 4 News, “one of the UK’s leading correspondents. With a portfolio of coverage from Syria to door stepping Kelvin Mackenzie over Hillsborough, to Glasgow Rangers, he displays great range and versatility with a knack for finding strong angles and compelling stories. He brings real authority and storytelling skills to whatever he covers.”

Thomson is a game changer.  Never has a UK journalist had so many people wanting him to stop asking questions, including many in his own industry.  Fortunately he appears to be some kind of Geordie-hostility-feeder.

Good journalism is important. Well done to the winners and those in their support teams.

  1. The Nazis in Germany began as an anti-Jewish organisation at a time when the Jews were by an large communists and in favour of aligning themselves with the USSR.

When the Nazis got into power in 1933, they did so by the skin of their teeth with the Communists a very close 2nd, which was populated with a large Jewish contingent.

The Nazis only labelled themselves as socialist so to mark themselves as different from the Jewish people and as soon as they got into power the Jewish people at the head of the German Communists were punished as soon as the ink was dry on Hitler becoming Chancellor.

Not sure what any of that has to do with Scottish politics today. No party in Scotland bases themselves on religious grounds, except of course for the Conservative and Unionist party :)

  4. Snake,

That’s a shocking comment. So the people who don’t vote for independence are not really Scottish now?

The more I hear from SNP supporters, the more I fear for my family and my friends in an independent Scotland.

I’m in no way criticising you for raising the complaint but I reckon behind the scenes they are rubbing their hands and saying “that’s another one we’ve wound up – mission accomplished”.

I don’t know what the answer is. They used to piss me of all the time and I complained too. I got the same brush-off every time. They really are a bunch of wasters, and my response this season is not to listen or watch bbc shortbread. Funnily enough they haven’t pissed me off this season.

It isn’t shocking at all. I am asking how many within the electorate were Scottish and which ones weren’t because if they move away from Scotland within the next year they cannot vote in it can they?

I am interested to know this that is all.

I was interested who the Scots were and which other groups voted.

    That’s all.

Everyone who eligible to vote can vote. I don’t want the vote taken off people.

I had spoken to someone at Glasgow Uni who is not a Nationalist per se, he thought the figure might be misleading for those reasons.

Only just saw above from Alex Thomson on Oct 26th about intimidation from fans of Huns 2.0.

All swept under the carpet in Scotland.

Yet Neil Lennon could mutter s**** under his breath when he hits the 3rd red traffic light in a row on his way to Lennoxtown one morning and it’s headline news.

How many people who voted in that were actually Scottish and will be able to vote in the referendum next year.

It isn’t accurate. I’ve asked a few kids at Uni.

Snake you are one of the posters I enjoy reading but that is a very silly comment, who are you blaming for this the English again

The Nats are blaming foreigners, low turnout and the students being too posh.

I posted earlier about my daughters lecture class at Uni over 80 students only 3 voted for independence.

You will have to get used to the idea Scotland will stay in the UK

  11. It finally opened when I posted it on here

its Turnbull Hutton, interesting so far GOODNIGHT ALL

  12. On another subject, I’d never heard this one before- at the game the other day, waiting to buy from the burger van- guy in front of me was buying a roll and sausage- woman asked ‘do you want anything on it’? ‘Aye’, he replied, ‘give me a fiver each way’

Said before – politics for me is like football – you grow up supporting one lot and don’t change

Labour will always get my vote – even under a loser like Gordon Brown

Lib Dem. I see as Tories with a conscience and thus even less likely to gain my vote!

    Pggtips

Interesting take on German history – I know that some leaders of the KPD were born Jewish – not sure if they were still practicing their faith by the time they were in politics

Also not sure if they were really that significant in terms of numbers either – that seems more like Nazi propaganda than anything else

Wee Eck would / will saying anything to get people’s votes – his defence of Catholic schools would be likely to last .as long as he needs Catholic votes

Once Scotland should become independent that vote will not be nearly so important as the majority will be non Catholic and he will play to that gallery IMHO

You are also a good poster and I enjoy your posts. We have a difference in opinion here that’s all but at least we are being civil.

One boy I know mentioned to me that a lot of European students go to Glasgow (I’m not necessarily saying it is an English vote and indeed Scots born kids will be voting no – that is a given) and that may have affected the result.

I would be interested to see the break down of which groups voted which way because I think that would provide more information for all parties involved and further the debate. The guy I talked to didn’t think it was 100% accurate.

I’m not blaming it on English students, that’s daft. A large number of people attend that University from different walks of life and I don’t think the vote used the exact criteria that the referendum will but the results and the breakdown should be interesting.

If any of those students graduate and move on to another place, they won’t be voting – that’s logical isn’t it?

And by the way, I’m entirely prepared for the NO vote. I know that is the one it will be but it won’t stop me hoping for a change.

Sorry about that, lost the heading.

Hunmedia demonising mc murdo over it.

He’s pulled his blog from their gutter.

  17. Snake,

Sorry but that’s rubbish. There was an election. The Better Together campaign won, quite handsomely. It is a lame response to say that many of those who voted against independence might have left by next year…

And to insinuate that they might not be Scottish… I’m stunned if you, as a Celtic fan, cannot see how sinister that kind of thinking is.

However, for me the biggest pointer here is the pathetic turnout. There is no appetite for independence in Scotland. No-one talks about it in the pub, it barely featured in the latest social attitudes survey of what people were concerned about.

If the SNP are able to persuade only 971 people (students at that!) to vote for them, at Scotland’s biggest University, then that to me suggests they are failing to motivate enough people to join their wider campaign.

I predict they will lose the referendum, but that comments like we are seeing tonight, about people’s ethnicity and tying this into their voting habits, will do deep damage to the fabric of Scottish society.

And those of us whose ethnicity is not part of the dominant group have the most to lose from this.

Know what you are saying concerning Salmond.

Personally I just want to get out from under Unionist rule, then move forward from there. Get independence then put the right people in regardless of which party they belong to.

With the looneys ruling us from down there. Really, can it get any worse???

  20. st/John Doyle

your statement to snake makes my point about the arrogance of the unionist parties in relation to this vote…

you can’t continue to treat the voters like idiots and expect to get elected..

labour has a long way to go, look at our scottish msps, name me one good labour ,member at holyrood?

when did we last have a real labour man or woman ? they are all trained in media to look and sound alike,, shame on our elected members at hplyrood and westminster

  21. “Personally I just want to get out from under Unionist rule, then move forward from there.”

    the SNP are offering you:

    Same Monarchy

Same Currency (if the English agree)

    Same Monetary policy

Same membership of the EU (though the EU have different ideas…)

You are being sold a pup. Wake up.

  22. The spectacular OG by the SNP regarding the ethnicity of voters should be another wake up call to people up here

When things do not go their way they revert to scapegoating -just like the national socialists in Germany in the 1920s and 1930s

I was winding you up a bit mate it is the Nats are taking it badly if they had won this tonight I think they would have declared a public holiday. I am enjoying their pain I have been really surprised at how many young people dont support independence.

I have many friends who are Nats discussing the issue like adults I find great like you and I we can disagree but in a friendly way

At the end of the day we both have another passion we can agree on the Famous Glasgow Celtic

What I want is a vote on independence for Glasgow

  24. Michael, thanks for your comment.

While I know what you mean, I believe that they should be challenged. Maybe not at every turn but their version of the truth needs checked from time to time.

It takes them time to reply and if they are questioned enough it can p*ss them off too! ;-)

Anyway, I’d better let the blog get back to the SNP……….ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz
