The Men who sold the Jerseys, Geordie-hostility-feeder

889

Congratulations to Mark Daly and the BBC production team behind The Men who sold the Jerseys, who received the award from the Royal Television Society for Best regions current affairs and news event for their documentary into the goings-on in the years before Rangers descended into liquidation.  They won against Grananda’s Hillsborough – The Truth At Last, which centred on a hugely important human and political story, which illustrates the standard of achievement.

Television journalist of the year

Congratulations also to Alex Thomson, of Chanel 4 News, “one of the UK’s leading correspondents. With a portfolio of coverage from Syria to door stepping Kelvin Mackenzie over Hillsborough, to Glasgow Rangers, he displays great range and versatility with a knack for finding strong angles and compelling stories. He brings real authority and storytelling skills to whatever he covers.”

Thomson is a game changer.  Never has a UK journalist had so many people wanting him to stop asking questions, including many in his own industry.  Fortunately he appears to be some kind of Geordie-hostility-feeder.

Good journalism is important. Well done to the winners and those in their support teams.

  1. “No Catholic PM in the UK for 300 years”……..but we have a Catholic Hitler in the person of Iain Duncan Smith.

    So….who knows what may come?

actually yes it is, if there’s a yes vote scotland will no longer be a part of the UK and will be able to make as many fiscal decisions for scotland only as the UK does for itself now

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

If there is a ‘yes’ vote there surely will be no such thing as the UK?

    1. All the debate on independence is so far based of fear. What a missed opportunity.

    2. At one time politicians were as iconic as pop stars. People believed in them. Not any more.

    3. The last was Maggie. She is also the reason for 1 and 2.

I live over on the west – near Teddington.

On the independence debate – I think that leaving Scotland over 30 years ago negates my opinion. What I would say though from 400 miles away is that the standard of politician in the Scottish parliament seems incredibly poor – needs a few more heavyweights from all parties to instil a bit more confidence in any independent future.

Miki67 – I don’t usually do the sympathy thing on the web, simply because I feel awkward about it – but my thoughts are definitely with you for what its worth.

    Re the McMurdo-Thomson interview.

I saw some tweets somedays back about this, people asking McM for the recording he’d promised and him saying no, it was a written interview only. Later I read his piece and he said it didn’t go as planned.

is that why there’s no recording? Because AT wiped the floor with him?

Could you please point out where I have ever said that one religion was more important than any other? Or none for that matter?

My problem with the SNP is that they a mixture of people and ideas that I do not find either attractive or convincing

If Wee Eck told me that it was raining outside I would need to feel the rain drops on my face before I believed him

This is someone who talks about the unionist population of NI as being the “blood of his blood and bone of his bone”

This is also someone who started his career in the Bank of Scotland and who is up to his neck in the circle of Edinburgh based individuals who brought about a lot of the banking crisis

As others have pointed out his vision of independence is strangely free of any real vestiges of being independent – monarchy stays – Bank of England stays – etc

All that would be different would be that the muppets in Holyrood would be even freerer to vote themselves more money!

One bright spark of a SNP MSP I heard with my own ears describe themself as a Nationalist first and a Socialist second!

History tells us that combination did not work out too well in Germany

  11. Evening hoops,

I complained last week to the BBC regarding the Beeb’s Reporting Scotland’s report about Neil Lennon considering a complaint to UEFA about the manhandling in the Juventus game. My main point was how they focused on Gary Hooper holding a Juve players face and ignored a host of other images or live video to balance the piece. I believed that the image was chosen to show Celtic in a poor light, thus undermining the case that Neil was trying to make.

The Beeb have kindly replied to my complaint…………

    Dear Mr War

    Reference CAS-1932286-324GRV

Thank you for your e-mail. Your comments were passed to the Editor of Reporting Scotland, who has asked that I forward his response as follows:

“Thank you for being in touch about Reporting Scotland.

The report was about Neil Lennon’s assertion that Uefa should investigate the standard of the refereeing of the game between Celtic and Juventus. He was particularly unhappy about the confrontation between Celtic and Juventus players at set pieces. This television coverage that night focussed a number of clashes between Gary Hooper and an Italian defender.

Unfortunately, the game itself was broadcast on ITV and, for contractual reasons, we only have news access to their pictures for 24 hours. For our report, therefore, we had to rely on a limited number of still photographs to illustrate the point. These can never be as powerful as the moving image, but still got across the level of contact between the two players.

I disagree that we undermined Celtic’s case – we were simply telling the story using the best imagery available to us. You can be sure that if Uefa consider Neil Lennon’s complaint they’ll be looking at moving pictures and taking evidence from a number of their officials at the game.

Thank you, once again, for taking the time to contact us.”

Details of the BBC complaints process are available online at http://www.bbc.co.uk/complaints/handle.shtml

    Kind Regards

@wiredz Perhaps you might realise there’s a reason for the way the story is written. Nobody disputes the tension between them, but that’s not the full story, as the piece makes plain. Unless you’re only reading into it what you want to see!.

How many people who voted in that were actually Scottish and will be able to vote in the referendum next year.
