The Men who sold the Jerseys, Geordie-hostility-feeder

889

Congratulations to Mark Daly and the BBC production team behind The Men who sold the Jerseys, who received the award from the Royal Television Society for Best regions current affairs and news event for their documentary into the goings-on in the years before Rangers descended into liquidation.  They won against Grananda’s Hillsborough – The Truth At Last, which centred on a hugely important human and political story, which illustrates the standard of achievement.

Television journalist of the year

Congratulations also to Alex Thomson, of Chanel 4 News, “one of the UK’s leading correspondents. With a portfolio of coverage from Syria to door stepping Kelvin Mackenzie over Hillsborough, to Glasgow Rangers, he displays great range and versatility with a knack for finding strong angles and compelling stories. He brings real authority and storytelling skills to whatever he covers.”

Thomson is a game changer.  Never has a UK journalist had so many people wanting him to stop asking questions, including many in his own industry.  Fortunately he appears to be some kind of Geordie-hostility-feeder.

Good journalism is important. Well done to the winners and those in their support teams.

Sorry to weigh in on indépendance vote, BUT, I believe that if Scotland voted for independence, one of the first things that would happen would be a Scottish general election, where we would expect the Scottish electorate to elect a socialist Scottish government, working within the European Union.

Not perfect, but the alternative is voting for a Unionist agenda, led by Eton public school boys, who regard Scotland with disdain and as a second class country.

Vote what you will, but don’t come on here, or go to games rabbling about ‘blood stained poppies’ etc and inferring republican sympathies whilst the reality is you are politically wrapped in a union jack. Thank you. God bless Sammi and Scotland’s martyrs.

    I havnt a clue .

Theres plenty of small countries gone indepenent and they have all seem to find a way to overcome these type of details. Positive thinking is all thats needed .

  6. I imagine it is possible that an independent Scotland could vote for a genuinely new Labour Party. In reality, I doubt it. There hasn’t been a Scottish Labour Party politician of any real worth since John Smith. I certainly wouldn’t even contemplate the likes of Sheridan, who is probably the best left wing orator actually still living in Scotland.

Equating Ireland’s and Scotland’s relationships with the UK (which in effect is what you are doing) is like equating rape with consensual sex.

Sorry, Ernie, but once again you could not be further from reality.

England’s ‘Rough Wooing’ of her nearest neighbour was no less brutal than her treatment of Scotland’s brothers & sisters across the Irish Sea.

There was NOTHING consensual about the loss of Scotland’s control of its own destiny.

    1. It’s almost certain that Labour will win the next General election.

    2. You’re probably fairly young and won’t remember that before the rise of the SNP the Tories were a major force in Scottish political life, and there’s no reason why they can’t be so again. The SNP’s Jim Mather made the point well when he said that ‘Any notion that an independent Scotland would be a left wing country is delusional nonsense’.

    3. I must have missed the SNP’s statement in praise of the Green Brigade’s poppy banner.

  10. gallowgate mad squad on

Kilbowie Kelt, I agree. Scotland’s indépendance was sold out by a hundred or so landowners (Rangers supporters I hear) to the Treaty of the Union 1707, which was meant to create an equal partnership.

We may not have our own modern day Bobby Sands, but we have a long list of freedom fighters of our own, strangely ignored and airbrushed out of our unionist controlled history. It’s incredible people here who were born in Scotland and live here, prefer extolling our Irish brother’s efforts at independence, than our own. I speak as a quarter Lithuanian, quarter Irish, and half Scot. All man though. Whoah. You should see me when i come out the shower. It’s scary.

Scotland joined the Union voluntarily because the Scottish ruling class wanted the benefits of having an empire (their own efforts having been a dismal failure).

Such popular dissent as there was came about because of fears of increased taxes and the threat to the position of the Church of Scotland.

Scotland benefited from, and punched above its weight in, the Union.

How anyone can equate that with Ireland’s treatment is beyond me.

  14. Even if Labour win the next general election which is very unlikely as the Tories have a £2 trillion excuse also known as excessive spending during the boom times and saving nothing for a rainy day which was always due, due to both the inherent laziness of the British worker, class snobbery and bullying in the workplace all of which add up a fundamental lack of competitiveness even when comparing wages country versus country.

Given such fundamental drawbacks in the economy, it is essential to save a bit and Labour didn’t do it.

If you don’t save you must cut spending or raise taxes which neither Labour or the Tories are prepared to do, at least where the numbers mean something, e.g. Taxing high earners and cutting bonuses for publicly funded companies which whether public, private or third sector is EVERY COMPANY in the country.

    Ernie ;

1- I think the tories will win again as there is no functional opposition.

2- Jim Mather? Was he Mahatma Ghandi’s advisor? I don’t know, I think the scottish population was by majority socialist, now I think its possible they have been brainwashed by Blair’s version of capitalism. Im not sure here. I do think we would create a more left wing compassionate society however.

3- GB’s banner? I thought it was disgusting, badly spelled, and dishonoured millions of ordinary DRAFTED dead men. Maybe they’d prefer Stalin or Hitler would have won. Their political posturing is infantile and offensive. I remember as a kid during 1980-83 being at games listening to drunken nonsense and wishing they would stop then. i feel the same now. And i’m a republican. A real one. That wants a scot republic also. The area for political protest is outside Celtic Park.

  17. Suffice to say I see the day in England within twenty years that if a house is on fire, and the house is uninsured or the occupant doesn’t have personal insurance, the fire engine will just drive by.

Also that within 10 years, the 1000th highest paid employee in the ‘NHS’ will be paid above £1 million.

I say England, whether that also occurs in Scotland is wholly dependant on the 2014 result.

  18. 24. Anybody listened to Bill McMurdo taking on Alex Thomson, available on some blog called Copeland Road.

But beware, it’s a car crash podcast, a complete total amateur numpty trying to take on a top distinguished journalist, every single question had McMurdo handed his own backside, even accusing him on the Dalek issue, ending with McMurdo scraping to ingratiate himself with Tomo, such was the ritual humiliation.
