The Men who sold the Jerseys, Geordie-hostility-feeder

889

Congratulations to Mark Daly and the BBC production team behind The Men who sold the Jerseys, who received the award from the Royal Television Society for Best regions current affairs and news event for their documentary into the goings-on in the years before Rangers descended into liquidation.  They won against Grananda’s Hillsborough – The Truth At Last, which centred on a hugely important human and political story, which illustrates the standard of achievement.

Television journalist of the year

Congratulations also to Alex Thomson, of Chanel 4 News, “one of the UK’s leading correspondents. With a portfolio of coverage from Syria to door stepping Kelvin Mackenzie over Hillsborough, to Glasgow Rangers, he displays great range and versatility with a knack for finding strong angles and compelling stories. He brings real authority and storytelling skills to whatever he covers.”

Thomson is a game changer.  Never has a UK journalist had so many people wanting him to stop asking questions, including many in his own industry.  Fortunately he appears to be some kind of Geordie-hostility-feeder.

Good journalism is important. Well done to the winners and those in their support teams.

  1. Wee Ernie,

Mate, what do you do when you have no internet signal and nobody in the house to argue with? I’m guessing that dart board with Wee Eck’s coupon on it takes one hell of a pounding!

    Chill.

  2. neilbhoy/Celtic-first,

Currently it costs in excess of £1million to generate 1mw of electricity via wind turbines (on and offshore). The costs for that of wave or tidal power is more expensive again!

The peak demand for electricity in the UK (around 5-6pm) is approximately 50-55,000 mw!

These costs are vastly more expensive than that generated by coal firing stations, although the number of these are decreasing in the UK. Likewise with gas-firing units or CCGTs.

Ok they are cleaner, naturally, but in terms of the near future ie 5-10 years, these additional costs do not and will not mean cheaper electricity for the people, especially those in lower income brackets…..in fact quite the opposite. And as our reliance upon imported gas increases I cannot see any decrease in fuel costs for the foreseeable future.

There are currently other technologies out there which can help to improve efficiency within the coal powered plants (as well as reduce CO2 emmissions) – something I am lets just say, fairly well acquainted with – but the companies are not willing to spend money on doing so, despite the cost benefits analysis clearly being in their favour………but thats another story altogether!

I have no doubts that eventually the electricity generation capabilities of the “renewables” will increase and be more affordable, but to pin your future on it ( a noble cause!) as Salmond seems to be doing, is not something that sits very well with me at the moment

    HAIL! HAIL!

What I was asking was what you think it will mean for the relationship between Scotland and England.

Who cares. If don’t think England would find itself being so dependant upon energy from Scotland that it would be viewed as some sort of security question. They would be a customer for our energy , end of story .

I agree entirely, though if you think Thomson has ‘resources’ you’d be sadly mistaken.

Determination to upset those who abuse power though, yes, in spades.

Thanks. Security wasn’t on my mind. But I did wonder if the energy question had got big enough to give Westminster cause to pretend it wants to “keep subsidising” Scotland just because it likes us.

Thanks. The point about diminished resources all round is well made.

  11. musters,

Being a Catholic and a Scotsman is a very different thing from being a Catholic and and Irishman, no matter which part of the Island you are part of. If you are from the Republic, there won’t be any discrimination, I’m sure. In the 6 Counties, you can aspire to things changing. The very opposite is not beyond the bounds of possibility in a Scottish Republic to judge by how the SNP have pandered to anti-Catholic bigots so far.

  12. The Battered Bunnet on

There has been a Jim Traynor sized load of nonsense written on the blog on a couple of topics this afternoon.

For those interested in the Energy challenge, I politely direct you to Dave MacKay’s excellent, neutral discussion on the problems and the options for sustainable Energy… without the hot air.

The entire book can be downloaded for free here http://www.withouthotair.com/

On the whole, tiresome, ‘fiendish Nat under every bed’ nonsense, can I respectfully point out that it is possible, indeed natural, for rational folk to come to a view based on the prevailing conditions at hand, without requiring to be bound by, or bind to, a given political dogma.

    Good News Stories

At a time of falling attendances in Scottish football, Raith Rovers has bucked the trend with a record crowd attending the recent cup tie against Celtic. The official total attendance, including our many guests at satellite hospitality venues, is now confirmed at 7,775, revised upwards from the initial figure announced on the day. Despite the live BBC TV coverage of the match, and the Sunday lunch time kick off, this is the largest crowd Stark’s Park has seen this century (the previous record having been the 7,496 who witnessed the 3 – 0 Millenium Derby victory against local rivals Dunfermline Athletic on 3rd January 2000).

The SNP has one purpose: independence. Any other issue is looked at in terms of what is most likely to lead to independence. For years they got away with portraying themselves as left wing in the West and right wing party in the North East. And look at the recent NATO debate. It wasn’t about the defence of Scotland, it was about which polic would gain them most votes come the referendum.

The SNP isn’t a political party with a coherent philosophy. It’s a single issue pressure group that realised the only way to get anywhere was to play the political game.

I agree, a chamelion party, imo, from the late 60’s,in the NE their only chance of gaining any seats was from the right, later with the Lib.Dems strong in their own areas and the Tories near gone, the only seats likely to gain were from Labour,so in the south the switch.

As for Salmond,as noted on here, he’s good at taking the p…, so that’s what he does when doesn’t want to or can’t answer the question.

However my biggest political gripe back then was the changeover of MPs in mid term to the Lib.Dems without putting themselves up for re-election. What utter arrogance and belittling of their constituents to pass it off as we voted for them and not the party they had represented when elected.

Rant over,3 posts in one day,too much for me, feeling poorly, didn’t go out.

  19. Hi Paul67,

It is great to see some real journalists get awards, the attitude and example of the few who have searched, confirmed and presented the truth did Scottish Football a real service.

The amount of deaf or defiant ears this information fell upon was confirmation of what we long suspected.

    And cured my paranoia.

I have to say since following Alex Thomson I have re-discovered Channel 4 news, for forthrightness and clarity it can’t be beaten.

    ————————————————————————————————————

I noticed in the independent Scotland debate some very questionable tactics deployed however there is an insidious element that in my opinion is little more than devilry.

That of the divide and rule. No doubt an effective tool but one only needs to look at the geography of the sub-continent of India or Rawandan tribal history to see the evil that it can engender.

Sure the partitioning of the Shetlands and Orkneys are not going to prove tragic on anywhere near that scale.

But what it managed to do in Ulster should be warning enough.

  21. Forget SNP hang-ups. Forget facist type nationalism .

This a real chance for real change.

After independence there can be a new clean Scottish Labour party if you want.

A yes vote is not really a vote for Salmond ,its a chance to turn this country round.

Britain -UK whatever you call is a mess . Its run by an Eton elite . Its not even a real democracy . We got a chance to get out and we should take it.

Could we have been looking at attracting more fans to HOME games instead of possibly subsidising away fans travel and entry fees
