The Men who sold the Jerseys, Geordie-hostility-feeder

889

Congratulations to Mark Daly and the BBC production team behind The Men who sold the Jerseys, who received the award from the Royal Television Society for Best regions current affairs and news event for their documentary into the goings-on in the years before Rangers descended into liquidation.  They won against Grananda’s Hillsborough – The Truth At Last, which centred on a hugely important human and political story, which illustrates the standard of achievement.

Television journalist of the year

Congratulations also to Alex Thomson, of Chanel 4 News, “one of the UK’s leading correspondents. With a portfolio of coverage from Syria to door stepping Kelvin Mackenzie over Hillsborough, to Glasgow Rangers, he displays great range and versatility with a knack for finding strong angles and compelling stories. He brings real authority and storytelling skills to whatever he covers.”

Thomson is a game changer.  Never has a UK journalist had so many people wanting him to stop asking questions, including many in his own industry.  Fortunately he appears to be some kind of Geordie-hostility-feeder.

Good journalism is important. Well done to the winners and those in their support teams.

Thompson got involved because he saw the story as a sort of parable regarding recklessness, arrogance and its consequences, drawing parallels with what happened in the financial sector.

I think he expected a quick resolution to the tax case which would have given the story more of a punch.

  5. Putin’s speech on Feb.04, 2013

On February 4th, 2013, Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, addressed the Duma,

(Russian Parliament), and gave a speech about the tensions with minorities in Russia:

“In Russia live Russians. Any minority, from anywhere, if it wants to live

in Russia, to work and eat in Russia, should speak Russian, and should respect

the Russian laws. If they prefer Shari’ya Law, then we advise them to go to those

places where that’s the state law. Russia does not need minorities. Minorities need

Russia, and we will not grant them special privileges, or try to change our laws to

fit their desires, no matter how loud they yell ‘discrimination’. We better learn from

the suicides of America, England, Holland and France, if we are to survive as a

nation. The Russian customs and traditions are not compatible with the lack of

culture or the primitive ways of most minorities. When this honorable legislative

body thinks of creating new laws, it should have in mind the national interest

first, observing that the minorities are not Russians.”

The politicians in the Duma gave Putin a standing ovation for five minutes!+

    Ernie,

I agree that the story probably didn’t pan out as Thompson had envisaged. Ironically, I think that if the thick huns hadn’t goaded and threatened him he would probably have chucked it by now – pretty much as Paul calls it in his article.

Hah ——– Italian bureaucracy loves technical points and pedantry . I have a Scottish friend here . He had an enormous hassle in consequence of his source of funds being a Scottish Office Pension. He ended up having to get The Foreign and Commonwealth Office of The United Kingdom and Northern Ireland to confirm that his Scottish Office Pension was kosher.. I have a friend from Northern Ireland whose Italian Identity Card states that he is English.

    – Well it’s certainly “ended in tears” over here in Ireland but I’ve yet to meet anyone who would like to revert to English dependence.

  10. A quick question for all, but especially those involved with running/coaching/helping out with boys clubs:

Have you ever heard of “report cards” being issued to parents as a means of “assessing” their boys abilities?

Oh and this refers to boys who are 9 years old…..or as it is these days, boys born in 2003 age group.

I’ll expand further (especially regarding the wording/desing of said report card) a little later as ive a teleconference arranged for 2pm but it shouldnt take too long.

    Look forward to hearing replies.

  13. interesting view of why scotland is sectarian.

but hey ho better together .

bawsman simple question ….when does scotland stop being considered a tory country what proof do you need. Infact what proof can you offer for your opinion …can you offer any i would be interested to hear.

regardless of what many of the left on here think or believe, the vast majority of the political left agree with independence the ones that don’t seem to believe in international socialism, which is of course fine but it is not going to happen anytime soon. I believe there is a far greater chance of attaining socialist policy in an independent scotland. so much so that even the horrible, nasty, catholic hating queen loving SNP have put in place more social policies than the so called labour government in the uk.

the fear among a small percentage of socialists and free marketeers, is really begining to get desperate now. They are realising that sounding like the sheep in animal farm is no longer cutting it.

Nationalism, of whatever stripe, in whatever country, always, always, ends in tears.

It might take a year, it might take a hundred years, but this is a doleful political movement which ends up impoverishing and dividing people.

Read Prof Alan Riach’s sinister piece in yesterday’s Herald to see the emergence of “cultural nationalism”.

We really ought to have left this nonsense in the 19th century where it belongs, and I shudder to think what will happen should people like Salmond get their way.

I’m not getting drawn into a political spat, I’ve already stated I’m scunnered with Nationalists peddling their crap on football websites.

Fair play to you……..you simply don’t want to be associated with any Country…..noone can argue with that…….me, I like to be known as Irish, since that’s where my heart is. …..end of ….

  23. There are so many conflicting pressures in the independence argument that I have to admit that I have changed my mind as often as I change my socks. I don’t think there is any other issue on which I am so confused.

Watching the SNP’s attempts to ‘equalise’ convictions for sectarian offences makes me very wary about committing future generations to their duplicitous, narrow-minded machinations.

On the other hand, I have always hoped that some day I would see a united, independent Ireland. That is very obviously not now going to happen in my lifetime. No matter. If I feel so strongly about the independence of the land of my parents & my every ancestor, it would be somewhat perverse of me to wish less than that for future generations of my own family in the land of my birth. Despite its flaws, I love Scotland & the vast majority of its people. If I had another 20 lives to live, I could never imagine wanting to be elsewhere.

Then, of course, there is the Nuclear Weapons issue. Although we would still probably be at the same risk of annihilation as before, at least we would not be prime targets, as we are now, in any conflagration & we would not be putting our scarce resources into paying for these absurd obscenities.

    Ach,..I’ve convinced myself.

    YES.

Maybe not very academic, but that’s my tuppence worth.

“Are there any University’s in Ayrshire?”

Any University’s what?? (Sorry, I’m a pedant and hate to see apostrophes used in plurals!)

The University of the West Of Scotland has a campus in Ayr.

  25. Jonny the Tim – Aye, my friend in Celtic. Mr Salmond reminds me of a slick timeshare salesman, breezily dismissing detailed questions about how exactly we will pay for what he’s trying to sell us.

One of his best tactics is to put the questioner on the defensive, by accusing them of somehow insulting the Scottish people’s ability to run their own affairs.

When that doesn’t work, he conjures a fantastical vision of a country that has all of the benefits of states like Ireland (no longer the SNP’s poster child since the crash), Denmark, Norway and so on, but none of the difficulties or problems those countries have. We are to have lavish public services and free goodies for everybody but low taxes, be an industrial and technological leader that somehow powers itself by windmills and solar panels and presumably also carbon-neutral organic fairy dust, be “free” and “independent” yet also “at the top tables of Europe” (i.e. bound into an ever-closer European Union), and all paid for through sage nods and winks to “oil” and “scrapping Trident”.

Now, I believe the SNP are sincere in their beliefs. But so are Jehovas Witnesses and vegans and people who think “Most Haunted” is a documentary.

Perhaps they never fully grew out of that childhood phase when everybody thinks they’ll grow up to be a famous footballer or a rock star or a cowboy-astronaut-millionaire, or maybe they think Thomas More’s “Utopia” is an instruction manual rather than a satire.

The SNP believes it’s “anti-Scottish” to soberly assess the facts and risks and decide our present constitutional arrangements are less worse than the alternative they propose. I think most Scots beg to differ. A lot of 16 year olds will fall for the SNP’s emotionalist rhetoric, but most adults – who have had some experience of timeshare salesmen and double glazing pedlars – will see through it. (thumbsup)
