The Men who sold the Jerseys, Geordie-hostility-feeder

889

Congratulations to Mark Daly and the BBC production team behind The Men who sold the Jerseys, who received the award from the Royal Television Society for Best regions current affairs and news event for their documentary into the goings-on in the years before Rangers descended into liquidation.  They won against Grananda’s Hillsborough – The Truth At Last, which centred on a hugely important human and political story, which illustrates the standard of achievement.

Television journalist of the year

Congratulations also to Alex Thomson, of Chanel 4 News, “one of the UK’s leading correspondents. With a portfolio of coverage from Syria to door stepping Kelvin Mackenzie over Hillsborough, to Glasgow Rangers, he displays great range and versatility with a knack for finding strong angles and compelling stories. He brings real authority and storytelling skills to whatever he covers.”

Thomson is a game changer.  Never has a UK journalist had so many people wanting him to stop asking questions, including many in his own industry.  Fortunately he appears to be some kind of Geordie-hostility-feeder.

Good journalism is important. Well done to the winners and those in their support teams.

  1. On regional leagues

I wonder if after a merge of the leagues in Russia and the Ukraine they will go after, er invite other leagues from Eastern European countries, from the baltics to the black sea (and Finland) to join their new organisation, let’s call it a block of countries, or the Russian Block.

In central Europe you could have Austria and Germany merging leagues, perhaps inviting near neighbours Poland, Hungary might fit in here. Since France is so large they might look to include clubs from Strasbourg and Metz to join this association. It would probably make sence too for the Dutch, Belgian and Danes to join this.. let’s call it Hanseatic League.

The swiss can do what they like.

Another option for the Spanish Netherlands would be to join an Iberian League (sponsored by Peek Freans Bourbon Creams) with Spain and Portugal, possibly including the Basque regions of France and the Rock of Gibralta.

Further north a British league could be formed (with the exception of Ireland) a kind of Allied League, and any escapees from France and Poland could also join this league, if they are willing to relocate. After a few years teams from the US might have a look and decide to join in too.

It might make sense for the Italian League (sponsored by Garibaldi) to join with the Hanseatic League, but a Mediteranean League could be formed with Greece and Turkey, a sort of Roman Legion.

    Just a though

(took me ages to think of that so posting again, having missed the “new article posted” message on previous thread)

I get pig sick of these Nationalists on football messageboards. I have tried not to react, even though I detest Nationalism in all its guises.

Scotland is a Tory country, they will revert to type post seperation vote disaster.

  3. Completely off topic: just watched ” Dark Shadows ” with Johnny Depp…..highly entertaining and very funny.

Regarding separation of church and state, is that not the de facto position in Scotland already?

    __

I put this down to the type of Protestantism practiced in each. Anglicanism is a very close to Catholisism, Calvanism isn’t.

I understand that the Puritans were close to the Calvanist way of practicing “faith” and wanted so much to dictate the way people should practice religion and live, thet they took their chance of setting up a religious state in the new lands to the west.

Anglicanism was a schism from Rome, the faith didn’t change really, just the admin.

When one of the James tried to force Anglicanism in Scotland, it cause riots as it was seen as papacy.

In short, in Scotland catholisism is further from protestantism than it is in England. With larger differences comes more hatred.

Thoughts and Prayers with you my friend. I felt a smile come over my face when I read the bit about your Mum spotting the Hoops Scarf and how she knew how much the Club means to you.

The smile turned quickly two a tear and a lump in my throat as I thought there is a Woman who knows that her time on this Eartth has come but for her kin it continues and in your case that involves following something you love whilst you are on this Earth…you beloved Celtic.

She maybe gone from this Earth and hard for you to accept but she is in a better place now.

    God Bless her Soul.

    Keep the Faith!

Broadly, I agree with you. However, it’s not so much the resources that Mark Daly and Alex Thomson have at their disposal that makes the difference between them and us. It’s more the clout they carry.

Grimmond McCrummoch took a call from Tommy in Glasgow. Tommy broadcast it. Tommy is a genius. However, that was very unusual. McCrummoch would dismiss you and me as bampots if we phoned his office and asked for five minutes of his time. The people he has in place to stop those calls coming through would stop our calls coming through. But if Channel 4 phones or the BBC, he’s much more likely to feel he has to take the call.

Then, when he does, the BBC or Channel 4 presenting what he says and putting it into the context of this entire scandal is to give the weight, the credence and the exposure the story needs. Bloggers blogging about it on a blog does not.

I think this is why Paul refers to Alex Thomson as a game-changer.

Well said. Two proper journalists who have been recognised by their peers as a result of their sterling work.

When you look at who as win awards for covering the liquidation of Rangers within the cosy clique of Scottish sports ‘journalism’ you can only laugh.

Thomson in particular has to deal with infantile Sevconians on a daily basis, which he does with ease, but it is proof of how they simply can’t handle the truth.
