The Men who sold the Jerseys, Geordie-hostility-feeder

889

Congratulations to Mark Daly and the BBC production team behind The Men who sold the Jerseys, who received the award from the Royal Television Society for Best regions current affairs and news event for their documentary into the goings-on in the years before Rangers descended into liquidation.  They won against Grananda’s Hillsborough – The Truth At Last, which centred on a hugely important human and political story, which illustrates the standard of achievement.

Television journalist of the year

Congratulations also to Alex Thomson, of Chanel 4 News, “one of the UK’s leading correspondents. With a portfolio of coverage from Syria to door stepping Kelvin Mackenzie over Hillsborough, to Glasgow Rangers, he displays great range and versatility with a knack for finding strong angles and compelling stories. He brings real authority and storytelling skills to whatever he covers.”

Thomson is a game changer.  Never has a UK journalist had so many people wanting him to stop asking questions, including many in his own industry.  Fortunately he appears to be some kind of Geordie-hostility-feeder.

Good journalism is important. Well done to the winners and those in their support teams.

‘And while I think Ernie tends to overstate his case about the SNP’s historic anti-Catholicism’

    Just to be clear.

The SNP founders weren’t anti Catholic per se.

They regarded the Scots as a distinct race. A superior race.

Indigenous Scottish Catholics were racially Scottish and therefore acceptable.

Irish Catholic immigrants were regarded as a threat to the Scottish race.

I get the impression that nats don’t know the history of their own party.

Maybe the schools are to blame.

  2. Philvis, you are one of the contributors that help to make this blog so good. The way you swat away anyone who disagrees with you with self deprecating wit and humour is marvellous, and the way you defend your corner is a sight to behold. Long may it continue. (Now can I be first tomorrow?)

    I agree with you.

I think though that there is a real danger that as news outlets become smaller they will lack that necessary clout to gain access.

The BBC should be leading the way but its output on a whole variety of topics looks increasingly sanitised (to my eyes anyway) and the prominence of latterly proven propagandists like Jabba certainly don’t inspire confidence in BBC Scotland.

Daly and Thompson certainly offer a ray of hope – but increasingly I think that people will just pick the flavour of news outlet that suits their own agenda, oblivious to any uncomfortable “truths”.

I recently lost my Republic of Italy Identity Card [ cue lots of bureaucratic hassle /you haven’t lived until you’ve negotiated Italian bureaucracy].

Finally made it through to the Office that actually issues the Card. . Card has a wee space for my ” Citizenship ” – cue bureaucrat asking —-” where were you born ? ” —

“Glasgow Scotland ” Bureaucrat then said ——” Scotland doesn’t have membership of the European Union —- you’ll have to be British “.

After he gave me the card , he told me he’d been reading about the forthcoming Independence referendum and added that if an Independent Scotland came to pass ,all the relevant treaties would have to negotiated and until that happened people like me would have as much right in Europe as Eg-a Moroccan. .

I wonder if the SNP have just moved on, have matured and decided that this is not what a modern political party needs to dwell on. Matured and moved on in the way we may wish the sevco fans would.

I expect the “Ah, but they should’ve apologised”, I’m sure most in the SNP have no truck with that historical position, and I wouldn’t assume it of them.

Until the bbc has the honesty to call servco as they are – a new club with no history -then i will not be congratulating their journalistic achievements. For me this is still the biggest msm scandal.

Have read that from opponents to independence but it is probably likely, however you would have been born in the United Kingdom as it was then and so can’t see an issue in the short term.

On a technical point, Britain is not a member of the EU either.

It’s the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

I’ve always like the idea of Scotland being an independent nation, but up till now, Mr. Salmond has failed to convince me that we would indeed be (a) Independent, and (b), we could afford it. At the moment I dont really know which camp I’ll fall into on the day, but your comments have reminded me of why I my answer should be NO. Too many petty laws introduced under the guise of “progression”, no apparent provision of finance for us soon-to-be oldies, and they obviously haven’t thought through the question of Sovereignty/EU membership, or currency issues.

Thanks for helping me make my mind up. I dont want to live in a country where you’re punished for singing songs at a football match, or for skelping yer weans bahooky, where some obese MSP tells me I’m too irresponsible to drink, and, as a result, I have to pay a minimum price for it!

    Just say NO. (I think!)

What I mean by that is that I would expect a dual nationality scheme to operate wherby you could get either a passport from Scotland or one from the UK (same as in NI where we can class ourselves as either Irish or British) so if you choose to renounce your british passport and only travelled on a Scottish one, then until Scotland was officially a member of the EU, you might not have the same rights as you do now.

  15. Bawsman said

“Scotland is a Tory country, they will revert to type post seperation vote disaster.”

Can you explain this Sir? I’m confused. Scotland is not, and never will be, a Tory country and yet, due to abject disenfranchisement caused by our place in the British union putting us entirely at the whim of Home Counties voters, that’s precisely what we are.

    And…

To those Celtic supporters, who seem to be placing (perceived) religious discrimination ahead of Scotland’s political self-determination, let me quote John A. Costello who said,

“I am an Irishman second, I am a Catholic first…”

Replace Irishman with Scotsman in the above quote and, unless I misunderstand, you seem to be echoing these frankly absurd sentiments in this, the 21st century.

  17. The SNP has one purpose: independence. Any other issue is looked at in terms of what is most likely to lead to independence. For years they got away with portraying themselves as left wing in the West and right wing party in the North East. And look at the recent NATO debate. It wasn’t about the defence of Scotland, it was about which polic would gain them most votes come the referendum.

The SNP isn’t a political party with a coherent philosophy. It’s a single issue pressure group that realised the only way to get anywhere was to play the political game.

  18. Read Paul67’s article then read this:

“Leggo well worth a read today.” – Chris Graham.

    My God.

  19. Tim Malone Will Tell on

    Ernie,

You say that – but only Daly up in Scotland treated the story seriously – worrying in my opinion that STV and BBC were generally quite happy to trot out crap debates on saving Scottish football rather than targeting the people responsible for wounding it.

We were certainly blessed that Thompson got involved. No real reason why he should have got involved at all given demographics – maybe our own O.G. Rafferty had something to do with that?

  20. Nationalism, of whatever stripe, in whatever country, always, always, ends in tears.

It might take a year, it might take a hundred years, but this is a doleful political movement which ends up impoverishing and dividing people.

Read Prof Alan Riach’s sinister piece in yesterday’s Herald to see the emergence of “cultural nationalism”.

We really ought to have left this nonsense in the 19th century where it belongs, and I shudder to think what will happen should people like Salmond get their way.

‘I wonder if the SNP have just moved on’

    You would have thought so.

But there again you wouldn’t have expected William Wolfe to have said what he did about the Pope’s visit or the Falklands war. Yet there was someone who appeared entirely reasonable and civilised not only holding views which most found offensive but was so unaware that he was out of step with modern thinking that he felt relaxed enough to express them publicly.
