The paradox of Sinclair not taking a dive in the box

242

We discussed on Friday how vulnerable our domestic unbeaten run was against Hibs, and so it proved. Footballers are not automatons, no matter how belligerent fans’ encouragement becomes. Their performance levels will inevitably peak and trough. After climbing so many mountains since beating Rosenborg away, we were vulnerable to a professional Hibs performance, designed by Neil Lennon, who knows how to squeeze results in challenging situations.

Brendan Rodgers is not short of options for central mid, but is anyone performing better than Callum McGregor? On Saturday, he was the difference between defeat and a draw.

We should have been awarded a late penalty when Efe Ambrose pulled Scott Sinclair, but Scott, dutifully, stayed on his feet.

There is a paradox for footballers. You are not going to fall is someone holds you around the torso, all that’s going to happen is you will not progress in the intended manner. But if you don’t fall, you are less likely to be awarded a penalty. The unwritten rule referees adhere to, is that if you want a penalty, you’d better hit the deck, no matter whether the foul is capable of knocking you off your feet or not.

That’s all fine and well, if a little dysfunctional, as long as everyone knows the rule, but when a team-mate was earlier booked for alleged simulation, there is a strong disincentive for a player to dive to the ground to indicate his choice, that the foul perpetrated upon him, should be awarded.

Unwritten rules in football refereeing are pretty unhelpful.  We should stick to the written ones.

Thank you to all who supported the Celtic FC Foundation through the Great Scottish Run yesterday. I’m sure the participant numbers must have reached a new high as the Foundation tshirts seemed to be everywhere.

NEW CQN PODCAST FROM CELTIC PARK ON SATURDAY

Kevin Graham is back with a new CQN Podcast from Saturday. He talks to supporters on the bus on the way to Parkhead, interviews John Paul Taylor outside the ground and captures the atmosphere and action inside the ground before getting some more supporters’ views on the bus home after an eventful afternoon at Celtic Park.

Apologies for a few sweary words in this podcast near the end.

Thanks for the memories Tom. Anything that’s rock and roll is fine.

  4. News from 5 minutes ago…….Tom Petty, the rocker best known as the frontman of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, is clinging to life in a Los Angeles hospital, according to TMZ. An earlier LAPD report which confirmed the singer’s death, and which CBS reported, has since been clarified.

  5. 1/2)The LAPD has no information about the passing of singer Tom Petty. Initial information was inadvertantly provided to some media sources

    Strange…

  6. DD- A lot of news agencies saying he is on life support and unresponsive, widely reportrd an hour ago he had passed.

BFDJ — options for a professional contract. Seemingly we were in touch in the late 60’s.

*he’s the only person I’ve ever heard mention that. Seemingly the Big Mhan was “hiding’ in his car at the end of the street waiting for the deidco scout tae leave. FFS.

I did hear way back that we were interested in the wee Fife ned and allergy medicine aficionado. Deidco got him first, thanks be to God.

We also had the goalie that only played one game for them, the Glasgow Cup Final that our reserves won, training with us, he also opted for them. There is a God.

  12. Tom Petty was put on life support Monday (Oct. 2) after suffering cardiac arrest, and conflicting reports now say that he has died at the age of 66. CBS News’ breaking news tweet citing LAPD has since been deleted. The LAPD later tweeted out an apology: “The LAPD has no information about the passing of singer Tom Petty. Initial information was inadvertantly [sic] provided to some media sources. However, the LAPD has no investigative role in this matter. We apologize for any inconvenience in this reporting.”

Earlier in the day, Petty was found in his Malibu home in full cardiac arrest, not breathing. Authorities told The Hollywood Reporter they did respond to a Malibu home around 10:52 a.m. for a man who suffered a heart attack, but they could not confirm it was Petty. Emergency responders were able to get a pulse back, but the man is in critical condition. He was then rushed to the hospital.

  13. THE GREEN JEDI on 2ND OCTOBER 2017 12:50 PM

my despair of watching the unfolding scenes in Catalonia yesterday afternoon were compounded by an insensitive tweet from Kris Commons where he asked “why are there no fans at the Barcelona game?” You really should have seen some of the responses he got back!!

in the week that was in it, I am under no illusion that Commons WAS undoubtedly the leak in the Celtic dressing room to the SMSM during Ronny’s ill fated final season. There is also no doubt at all that BR knew this also…..hence he wanted Commons nowhere near the first time dressing room or training sessions

    —————-

    your talking shite.

several separate recorded interviews. Kris Commons not only took part in Brendan Rodgers training sessions, once injured he was allowed access to BR playbooks and training manuals.

    Evening all.

Just checked out Phil MacG’s latest.

Interesting to see Celtic will receive £332k prize money for being champions last season.

    Worth comparing with the EPL.

The team that came bottom of the league, Sunderland got £312k ………..

Reading back apart from the last 2 draws I believe Celtic have a near perfect record for the last 19 or 20 games with WG in charge

Against Accies , the first Accies goal the linesman had a perfect view which the ref had to go with … our disallowed goal was chalked off as the corner kick bend out the park and a goal kick awarded – Nialls was a swallow dive although memory could be playing up – only wrong decision was Jasmie. ….

I watched a wee guy on Saturday that I have watched since under 9 fitba in Clydebank. He played with my nephew who is playing for Dumbarton. They went to Saint Peter the Apostle Clydebank together, and still go to our European games in Paradise together. His two goals was a please sign me message to Brendan. John McGinn Celtic is his wish.

  22. Can’t see what McCann did that was so unforgivable. He wanted to play for Celtic but Celtic didn’t want him. So, he signed for the undesirables for the money. Not particularly noble but no hanging offence.

Took my kids to a party in ayrshire (was a huge kids play zone thing) I didnt know the parents/anyone at the party involved so i just planked my ass down and started talking to all the people.

After sitting there for about 20 mins talking away (kid was running around talking and having fun with all the kids) the parent of the party came around with cupcakes for all the parents to thank them for being at the party so early on a sunday.

Went for a pish and came back to see everyone had f*cked off.

Only then did i realise i had sat down at the wrong kids party.

Took my kids to the local ayrshire mcdonalds and the host with the cupcakes was the boss of my local ayrshire macdonalds…………

Niall McGinns was a stonewaller, I agree about the Stokes corner however the Hamilton goal the player was standing in an offside position and at no point was onside WC should have seen it as I remember pointing it out to my dad before the replay.

I don’t know if their is footage of that 90 minutes but WC performance was shocking and that of a cheat.

His demeanour and spite was evident, he was punishing Celtic because Celtic had the audacity to complain about a penalty in a previous game that he admitted he didn’t see.

If you take everything in to account added to what we know now that in 2011 Rangers needed CL money to survive, we were never paranoid enough.
