Then there were two: Rod Petrie steps forward

1098

Hibernian chairman, Rob Petrie, yesterday told BBC Radio Scotland “Integrity is beyond purchase”.  It’s incredible to think that we live in times where this is actually news.

It’s hard to imagine how anyone would go about arguing with Rod on this matter.  Kilmarnock chairman, Michael Johnston’s recent comment, “The [SPL] clubs are mindful of a sporting integrity aspect but the commercial benefits may outweigh that” offers the alternative view, but the logical conclusion of Petrie’s argument is stark.  If integrity of top clubs can be purchased, what about officials, referees and players with bookmaker friends?

We can assume Hibernian will join Celtic in voting against admitting a Newco directly into the SPL, should such a vote occur.  Five clubs in total are required to block such a proposal.  With Petrie declared against, would Romanov at Hearts vote for Newco?  His previous public pronouncements suggest he would relish the opportunity to take on one of the big Glasgow clubs.

Dundee United and Aberdeen are two other clubs under significant supporter pressure.  Both teams are also keen to change the 11-1 voting rule, which would be possible without a Newco.

Rangers, Kilmarnock, St Johnstone (through manager Steve Lomas) have all declared in favour of admitting a Newco, I expect Motherwell and St Mirren will do the same.  Ross County and Inverness may fancy adding Dundee into next season’s relegation fight instead of Newco but there has been no indication how either club would vote.

The 7th May vote was the best chance of getting Newco provisions voted through.  The more time clubs have to consider the decision the more susceptible they will be to supporter lobby.

I am of the view that SPL chief, Neil Doncaster, will not allow himself to become aware if Rangers have a prima facie case to answer as a result of the SPL inquiry into contractual arrangements until after a vote is taken.  Deadline for clubs to respond to the inquiry passed over five weeks ago. A simple check of submissions against SPL records is all that is required. Even if each clubs issued an all-clear, the inquiry should have reported.

Doncaster perhaps has no idea of the flood that will come his way soon and wash away all of these questions. His opportunity to act before events overtake him is limited.

Spoke to Tony Haggerty on the Hotline abt ballantyne accepting the huns invite to fund raise over at the Linfield game. To put it short his attitude STANK!! He came back with “it was only good manners you got a problem with that”? I asked him did he know that would it not be more fitting to refuse it on the grounds that Ragers put them out the game a few years ago. Whats your problem? He asks again. I gave up at that point but asked him was George Peat not available??

  6. petec- We won’t play any of these teams- they are in the “Non-champions” qualifying route.

We will play in the “Champions” (how good does that sound) qualifying route which will be far easier – you will see us seeded at worst 3rd in the 4th round (if we get past 3rd round), a few tricky teams could await (Dinamo Zagreb, Partizan Belgrade, Helsingborg)- but as you say, nothing to fear!

Your old man was my teacher for Registration and Guidance (maybe) while at St Pats , so I saw him every day when I was there from 81-87.

A real character , and an absolute gentleman.

Our first year , was the last year of the belt (before it was banned) , and I’ve vivid memories of your da dispensing it to a few lads who pushed their luck too far. It was quite difficult for them to act the hardman again when the whole class had saw them crying like wee lassies.

Thankfully , I never received it from him , and made sure I only “chanced it” in classes where the teachers were rubbish with the belt.

He was , like many at the school, a good teacher , and I’m sure there aren’t many like him now.

Does anyone know which school replaced St. Augustine’s, after it was demolished?

It had a large catchment area, covering the north ans north west of the city.

  17. Now that the vote is getting closer, may I ask, what are the sanctions against a club who refuse to fulfil an SPL fixture?,my reasoning is simple, should rangers be allowed back in,Celtic should refuse to acknowledge them, not because of the oppponent, rather,as a REAL gesture of sporting integrity.Speaking of integrity,I make that now 12 weeks since the walls began tumbling down and, unsurprisingly,STILL not one word of remorse from the ckub formerly known as rangers, several threats, plenty of intimidation,LOADS of posturing, but,no apologies, personally,I blame the schools.

  18. Hamiltontim St Monicas is there now. The old parish chapel house was right on the front gate although the chapel was about a mile away.

Spooky. My wife expressed a similar comment during the six o’ clock News.

  21. The SFA panel states in their findings that the only thing they could think of that was worse than the financial doping going on at rangers was match fixing.

  24. On the 18th August 1994 my good lady took me to the Walfrid for lunch on my 32nd birthday. I took with me a Book that my Mum and Dad got me for a Christmas present in 1989…Twists and Turns, the Tommy Burns Story!

The plan was to meet the legend, get a photo and to have him sign the book. Alas, he was not in for lunch. I was told that if I left the book at the front desk, he would sign it and they would call me when it was ready.

I walked down the staircase (you know the one) to leave it at the front desk. As I did so, there was the legend himself just about to walk out the front door. Tommy I cried, he stopped…”It’s my birthday, could you sign my book”. He simply wrote Happy Birthday “Sunday name” and signed it Tommy Burns.

I engaged him in conversation and asked when he was going to sign somebody, he replied “Soon Son, soon”; this made me laugh as Tommy was only five years older than me. As I continued, there was a cry from a wee man wearing a bunnet in a Honda Civic, he shouts “Tommy, we really must be going”.

And off the legend went, with the man in the Bunnet and Billy Stark to attend the meeting that would cost Celtic £100/£150k for poaching the legend from Kilmarnock.

For the record the legend was true to his word, shortly after we signed the late Phil O’Donnell.

Sorry for the longish post but on this the anniversary of the legend’s death I had to express what he meant and still does mean to me.

Tommy Burns was and always will be my Celtic hero bar none.

Thank you God for sharing Tommy with us, even if it was not long enough.

God Bless his Soul. God Bless Rosemary and the family.

    Keep the Faith!
