Then there were two: Rod Petrie steps forward

1098

Hibernian chairman, Rob Petrie, yesterday told BBC Radio Scotland “Integrity is beyond purchase”.  It’s incredible to think that we live in times where this is actually news.

It’s hard to imagine how anyone would go about arguing with Rod on this matter.  Kilmarnock chairman, Michael Johnston’s recent comment, “The [SPL] clubs are mindful of a sporting integrity aspect but the commercial benefits may outweigh that” offers the alternative view, but the logical conclusion of Petrie’s argument is stark.  If integrity of top clubs can be purchased, what about officials, referees and players with bookmaker friends?

We can assume Hibernian will join Celtic in voting against admitting a Newco directly into the SPL, should such a vote occur.  Five clubs in total are required to block such a proposal.  With Petrie declared against, would Romanov at Hearts vote for Newco?  His previous public pronouncements suggest he would relish the opportunity to take on one of the big Glasgow clubs.

Dundee United and Aberdeen are two other clubs under significant supporter pressure.  Both teams are also keen to change the 11-1 voting rule, which would be possible without a Newco.

Rangers, Kilmarnock, St Johnstone (through manager Steve Lomas) have all declared in favour of admitting a Newco, I expect Motherwell and St Mirren will do the same.  Ross County and Inverness may fancy adding Dundee into next season’s relegation fight instead of Newco but there has been no indication how either club would vote.

The 7th May vote was the best chance of getting Newco provisions voted through.  The more time clubs have to consider the decision the more susceptible they will be to supporter lobby.

I am of the view that SPL chief, Neil Doncaster, will not allow himself to become aware if Rangers have a prima facie case to answer as a result of the SPL inquiry into contractual arrangements until after a vote is taken.  Deadline for clubs to respond to the inquiry passed over five weeks ago. A simple check of submissions against SPL records is all that is required. Even if each clubs issued an all-clear, the inquiry should have reported.

Doncaster perhaps has no idea of the flood that will come his way soon and wash away all of these questions. His opportunity to act before events overtake him is limited.

Lennybhoy, I do enjoy talking about Celtic. You may have noticed.

celtic40me, aye. I don’t remember it being discussed at the time but I don’t think he came back from his 78 injury with the same pace he had earlier.

Anyone remember the game at ibrokes v them, when we had a free kick just outside their box and the ball got passed to Danny totally unexpected (for us and him!) and he just skimmed the bar with his effort? We got a free kick in the next home game and the jungle started the chant for Danny to take it !

  3. Anyone know what time the FOD appeal is tomorrow? Out and about in the Highlands all week, so cannot log on so often.

  6. Is anyone aware how close we are, or not so close to buying Jordan Rhodes?

I think what we do with Rhodes is like what we’ve done (or may do) with Hooper, take a young guy from League 1, nurture him, and then sell him onto the Premiership.

His stats look fantastic, three consecutive seasons of better than a goal every 2.5 games.

Would expect Hooper to leave in the summer especially if neither he nor Forster get a call for the Olympics, and if Hooper does leave, a bid of £10 million is possible given his exploits this season especially.

I shared a class with Keith O’Brien in the short time he spent there between leaving the Antrim Glens & heading for the priesthood.

I was in the Dan Burns’ science class when the news of the death of George V! was brought round the classes. I have to admit that Dan was not totally respectful about the sad loss of his monarch.

A lot of memories stirred tonight with the names of Rinty’s fine body of academics.

I will throw in the eccentric & bookish ‘Dada’ Brogan. Dada was one of a few teachers who put their bookies lines on through the services of Mick the Janny, who went round the classes on such business early every afternoon.

  11. Paul 67 and others. I too remember the shabby way in which Danny McGrain was allowed to leave Celtic, without the opportunity to say farewell to the supporters. I wrote a letter to him, via the club, pointing out that he would be remembered long after the board of directors was forgotten. Got a lovely reply from his wife, Laraine McGrain (seriously), saying that Danny was overwhelmed with letters of support from the fans (long before the days of email) and appreciated them greatly. Was lucky enough to meet him a few years later, with my late mother, who was a massive fan, and Danny was an absolute gentleman and treated my maw as if she were the star, not him.

  24. My best memory of Danny McGrain will be his shot at Hampden in 1980, my first Glasgow derby, I also seen him score two in that game at murderwell 1979?

Can anyone remember a game back round 1982 ish at CP against Dun Utd, I think it finished 2-2 when someone hoofed the ball over the main stand roof into the carpark (some feat). My fading memory tells me it was Danny.

Thanks for that! I was with my Dad and I can remember everyone being shocked at Danny scoring! To me, it was the greatest goal I’d seen!

  26. With all this talk of schools it’s time that the alumni of St Gerards in Govan identified themselves. We deserve credit for living behind enemy lines. I could see Ibrox from my bedroom window which meant that I tried to avoid being around when Rangers were playing at home. On the night of the storm in 1968(?) though it had the consolation of seeing part of the roof of the Rangers end blow off :-). My mum had got us all up saying that if we were going to die then we should all die together which caused some bafflement to my big brother and me.

St Gerards boasts Jim Craig and Billy Connolly as ex pupils. I was there from 1968-1973 so a bit younger than these legends! Any other Old boys about? Sursum Corda!!

Noticed you mentioning the Bisley, aka The Mainbrace, the other day. I drank in there a few times just before it shut down. One of my older pals, now sadly departed, always used to say that there was some sort of Firing Range / Shooting Gallery below the pub, real guns the lot! As strange as it sounds he was adamant it was a fact etc. Just wondering if you knew like.

Unfortunately, it was such a long time ago that I don’t remember many names, except our immediate neighbours.

However, if they were St.Agnes’ parishioners, then I woul know them by sight.
