Those moving on in the summer

1021

I’ve always cautioned against judging a player who has been out for an extended period but being hooked at halftime last night looks like an ominous sign for Derk Boerrigter, who sparkled for 30 minutes on his debut against Ross County earlier in the season but has come nowhere close to that form since.

Injuries stopped him in his tracks that day against County, and several times since, but whatever the reason, we’ve not seen anything like what the player is capable of, and at 27, he is likely to be looking for first team action elsewhere next season.

After last night’s game Neil Lennon spoke of the possibility of signing and losing players over the summer transfer window, which starts in three weeks.  Buying well is crucial, and Celtic didn’t do that last summer, but getting those ‘no longer in the manager’s plans’ off the books as early as possible is also important.

Last August we offloaded Lassad, probably by parting with a bundle of cash in the process.  This is not a precedent Celtic will have been keen to set, but it’s better to have the decks cleared than have an unproductive player linger around for a year.

Anyone starting less than a third of the games he is available for selection should be looking for pastures new, especially with new arrivals expected this summer.

Last night was the chance to allow the fringe players a chance to shine, their trial match even though we had already paid millions for them. Most agree that the Dutch boy is useless, Balde lacks game time and probably ability and Pukki might be a useful fringe player. With these three on we had 8 men against 11 who were playing for a cup final place. The team changes also made us look as though we were using our cup tactics, or lack of a formation as it’s officially called, hence the open nature of the game. No chance of the youngsters getting a game due to the league decider tomorrow.

I hope the above link works, taken I think from Follow Follow (to oblivion maybe), so sad and yet so funny.

Perfectly reasonable reaction to the absurd amount of taxpayer money being poured into sprucing up the environs of Celtic Park and gifting land the Celtic for the training ground.

Would love to see us going for Stuart Armstrong. Also like the suggestion made earlier to go for Gauld and loan him back for a season, a terrific prospect he is.

Feel a wee bit guilty about weakening our opposition but keeps the dosh in Scottish fitba.

Always thought we should have went for the two Hamilton lads. Messed that up we did Imho.

  9. Thunder Road, I think you make a valid point. Neither Derk, Amido or Teemu get any game time and then suddenly they are all lumped in together with a makeshift midfield behind them. It certainly is a hard ask for any of them to shine, Given the circumstances I thought Pukki did really well and I don’t understand all the criticism he gets. However I have given up completely on Derk and Amido just doesn’t seem to have a clue.. He is a big strong athletic looking man but he has no sense of position and a poor first touch. I would dearly love to be proved wrong but for me never a Celtic player, not in a million years.

Can’t let that pass without mentioning Matthews, hooked at half-time and the worst of the lot – I’m amazed how often people have glossed over his inadequacies.

Celtic paid £3,000,000 for Boerrigter, and £4,000,000 for Pukki and Balde last summer.

We could have paid £5,000,000 and signed Finnbogason, this season’s top scorer in the Eredivisie.

Just let that sink in for a bit.

  19. CELTIC SIGNING (maybe) ?

…must’ve missed this while I was working (instead of shirking) these past few weeks.

Celtic have been watching Gimnasia’s keeper, Fernando Monetto recently. My Spanish is not that great, but this is a rough translation (link below) of an article published, 24 April in Olé, one of the Argentinian sports dailies. Read on…….

In the past ferw hours “El Lobo” rejected a 1.9MUSD offer from Glasgow Celtic for Gimnasia’s keeper, Fernando “Mono” Monetti today (24 April).

Mono’s current Contract has a 3M USD buyout clause and everything suggests that nothing will happen until a figure of that order is reached. In recent times, Boca Juniors and more recently Torino have noted interest.

Monetti is one of the products of Gimanasia’s current youth development policy and the jewel of the current title chasing side. However, he is out of Contract this June.

Some young strikers(is that old fashioned terminology?)have it all but like most positions, experience of how to play that position can be vital and all that is picked up as they get game time, season after season.

Amido may have been used to playing a totally different type of football from what he is being asked to play here.

This is not a lower league team with little pressure and expectation.

We also play against teams that park the bus almost every week and play us on the counter attack whereas that was probably the type of football he was used to.

Scottish fitba gets dismissed unfairly by so many but 1 thing that it is, is hard and to play in it cannot be easy.

I agree with the belief that guys like Iniesta, Xavi and even Messi might never have came through the ranks here because of the way it can be!

Can Amido get those games, learn from the experience and become a player who really knows how to play that position?

Like everyone, i hope a new signing can be a star and in some ways because he is so imposing physically, i probably hoped a bit more that we had maybe got ourselves a young Balotelli!

Maybe it is just wishful thinking that he will be a player but there is a better chance of him showing what he can do in a solid formation.

  23. Cheers winning captains. Relocated eh! They will say anything but the truth.

  27. I had a conversation about new clubs situation with a hun in work today, first time in over a year, easily.

Anyways, thought I would play the good guy and empathise with his predicament, he has renewed his sb and as far as he knows he’s the only one in the work that has.

Well, said I, it sounds like a civil war to me.

So I put to him…If you could go back in time and you had the choice off your titles being stripped and were allowed to stay in the top teir to stop all this nonsense.would you?

No chance we won them fair and square.

Think my smirk at the end gave me away…May their battle commence :)

  28. Thunder and Cork

Agree with you bot about Balde

The guy has lots of attributes and showed earlier in the season that he can score

However he needs the team to play to his strengths – last night we put hardly any balls in to the box.

I would give him another season – DB however really looks as if playing in Scottisherland is not for him- so we should come to an agreement and let him go

Pukki shows flashes of good ability but last night even when he scored he looked as if he was embarrassed!
