Time on the bench gave Hooper space

1040

This season, Gary Hooper has looked well below form of last term; his touch, movement and goals record don’t match up, but he came off the bench on Thursday to score a truly excellent goal.  Controlling a difficult ball in the centre circle, with defenders in close attendance, he picked out Giorgios Samaras before sprinting past his markers and finishing.

The winner against Motherwell was less spectacular but required sharp movement and spatial awareness.

Footballers cannot always play through bad form, sometimes they need a break, even for an hour on the bench, to get a different perspective on how they and the team play.

Despite his return to form I would retain the same 4-2-3-1 formation against Inverness next time out.

Issue 4 of CQN Magazine is out next week, let me know if you would like to advertise, celticquicknews@gmail.com.

Will all you guys who are handing in their season tickets please put them in a plain brown envelope, mark them for the attention of Philbhoy and hand them into the ticket office .

I will make sure that decent fans who cannot afford the pleasure of attending Celtic Park will get the opportunity.

    Thanks in advance!

  4. If Celtic voted yes i would never set foot in paradise again. I would also take part in the formation of a brand new Celtic that would start in the ENGLISH lower leagues and try to sign all the u19 current players

    Just a thought :)

James – great post and, as always, well written. The argument is one I’d like to sign up to but it is undedermined right at the start. You say:

“A vote is NOT the only weapon we have here. Don’t think that it’s going to be a vote that decides this. It’s not.

Ever read Sun Tzu? War’s are moral contests, won before they’re ever fought.

As a moral contest, this is Game Over. A rich, powerful institution has dodged its commitments to the state, to the taxpayer, and is seeking to flaunt even more rules, using the threat of financial penalties to those who don’t acquiese to its demands, as a means to leverege themselves into an even stronger position.

We need to frame the debate just like that, and the best of it is we don’t need to fudge it or spin it … just tell it like it is.”

The rest of your post builds upon this theme, that we are at war and shows how we can win it. You eloquently lay out the strategic options we have available but ignore the stark and horrible likelihood that our leaders have no intention of going to war but will seek to find a settlement that ensures the “Old Firm” remains.

Forgive my poor comparison, but I see it more in the terms of Braveheart than Sun Tzu. We, the foot soldiers, are on the battlefield ready to fight for our freedom. The enemy is there for the taking. Old Robert the Bruce and his cohorts, however, are cutting deals behind the scene to ensure the status quo continues, the rich get richer and the power stays in the hands of those that always have had it.

That’s why I said in my post they will survive. For it has always been so.

Well done for highlighting the large portion of responsibility for underperforming in terms of trophies that lies in house. This is a forum for Celtic’s fans opinions (thanks to Paul) – not a forum for some Celtic fans’ opinions. Keep calling it as you see it.

Im with Brogan, too much talking, jumping the gun..wait and see..

Brogan,Derry City were caught with 2 sets of contracts 3 seasons ago, they were relegated, lost a europa spot, dumped from the Setanta cup, because Linfield refused to play them,Derry owned them money..

Maybe im wrong, but Derry came back as a new club, any money coming in that was due to the old club went to the admin men to pay of debt, including a tax bill..outstanding money from Celtic for PAddy mc Court went to the admin men..loads of people have still not been paid from that event, including a work colleague of mine, who won the’ Derry City dream draw’,an apartment in Spain.Derry never owned one to raffle..By the way it was the second time this couple won the Dream draw..hmmmm..

The new Derry have sold players since, including James mc Clean, who was on the bench agst Man U for Sunderland at the weekend, and the money went into the club..

Derry got back in on the condition that the entire board resigned..

  9. As far as I can make out, much of today’s debate centre’s on a future vote that Celtic may or may not participate in.

It was pointed out on this forum a couple of weeks ago, that Celtic’s will interpret its first first duty as that of serving the interests of its shareholders.

Unfortunately for the views of the ordinary fan, this means the interests of the holders of a majority of shares. Not the interests of the majority of those holding shares. Two entirely different things.

  10. oooow i freaked out this afternoon at work after hearing about the article.

surely celtic wouldnt be as stupid to even consider siding with that lot. they have already let them off the hook for the best part of 4 years.

If sometimes telling the truth in stark, controversial terms makes me a suspicious package, then I plead guilty.

However, as I have pointed out before, the litmus test of my postings is their accuracy and truth.

Whilst I am not going to flaunt them here, my Celtic credentials are match for most and superior to some.

  14. Do not be in any doubt. If the roles were reversed RFC would not hesitate to bury us.Their fans would demand nothing less.

Remember their stance when Celtic faced oblivion,Murray’s”tenner for every fiver” quote and Souness when discussing the reasons for signing Maurice J.

If Celtic plc allow Rangers to return with simply a 10 point penalty I will not return while those responsible for that decision remain.

  15. Bob LobLaw

I wondered if that was directed at me… because you are right, I’m basing my posted views almost entirely on the commercial aspects.

I’ve said before that i’m not particularly bothered about the other lot – I’m best described as ambivalent. Of course they’re our hated rivals, but in any other context I’d rail against mindless and ill-defined hatred, and so even though the sporting soul hates Rangers the mind is saying, ‘steady on that’s strong language, it’s only a game’. So, oftentimes it’s hard to express a coherent position when the language is so readily confused.

I’d hate to see Celtic suffer because of Rangers actions. Taking account of BRTH’s interesting post and many other quite divergent opinions I’m not sure what to expect. Seems like there’s a hell of a lot of confusion in the background and very little of our own making. Our board will have a very tough time making this work for Celtic PLC, Celtic Football Club and the Celtic community in equal measure. And that’s not their fault. I feel, logically, that one of those constituents will take precedence and I guess we all know which one that will end up being.

So, for the most part I’m hoping we can dial down the vitriol in hope that we don’t string ourselves up when, and I fervently hope, a more natural justice, perhaps a more subtle route, might lead to a mutually suitable outcome.

That said, I can’t help but be swayed by the extent of feeling on CQN. Moderate contributors are of the same view as the wilder, less well dressed, posters – Rangers need to suffer and we shouldn’t support them. And if Celtic prosper this is absolutely fine by me.

When all is said and done I know which side of the fence i’m on, and whilst I’ll plead for moderation and hope to caution against excess I’m with everyone else.

I also think it’s worth re-iterating that in the context of fairness you and everyone else are absolutely correct. No business, least of all one that has done so much to ruin my weekends, should be allowed to get away with this. In any other context, other than our own proserity, I’d argue strongly in favour of the harshest of sanctions. So, because my own convictions are being swayed by fear or possibly the recognition of an unpleasant reality, I’m willing to stand by the board on this one.

Anyway, thanks for the reply. And Stirling Albion… I tried them once or twice, local team and all, but jeezo they were hard to like. For your sake I hope you never have to swallow that pill.

  18. Found this on Gordon Waddells page in the Sunday Mail (06/11/2011) under the title “It’s a Vlad Vlad world” in ref to Vladimir Romanov. Let’s hope for the sake of fairness he is equally scathing of Sir Minty and to a lesser extent Craig Whyte when their time comes for re-evaluation.

Wadell writes. That’s the problem with all these clubs whose strings are being pulled by egomaniacal owners. They exist on illusion. A footing that would be unsustainable without their benefactor.
