Time to circle the wagons

528

We all needed to get Tuesday night out of our system, but we must also put the result behind us and not allow it to bleed into the rest of the campaign.  Every game is important in the coming weeks, even the home cup-tie against Dunfermline, which in different circumstances would be viewed as an opportunity to exercise the squad.

Dunfermline, presumably AIK Stockholm, Hearts, AIK and Newco await.  We cannot afford to wallow in permanent introspective.  We need to get our act together and get on with it.

Five days ago, I was feeling good about the start to the season.  We had scored 12 goals in two league games, last season we scored seven in seven.  For all Neil made mistakes on Tuesday, he is not plotting behind our backs.  The manager, players and board will feel this as much as we do.  If things go against us in the coming weeks, you will know how alone we are.

Time to circle the wagons.

    MacJay

King maybe a dud. Played four games in a year.

    ====================================================

    Here`s hoping.

I`m certain that we have by far the most talented group of players in Scotland.

Can that group produce the results we need ? Are entitled to demand ?

I`m very confident that we can.

  2. There is far too much worrying over the game at Ibrox two weeks on Sunday. Despite what many will tell you it will not define anything. This will be a long season with many twists and turns like every other. What we must do first is get our house in order. Last season we managed 87 points in the League and we will require at least that amount this season and possibly more than 90. So we must take the necessary steps to achieve that firstly and then we go to work. And don’t forget there is always January to do more business, not ideal mind you.

For all of the negativity, this is a Celtic team that is rampant going forward. We have so much talent and so many threats. We need to sort the defence for sure but it is arguably much easier to do it this way around. I would be more concerned if we were blunt and didn’t look like scoring. A midfield powerhouse and a left back is where the fightback must begin.

Former Celtic Manager – lower than a snake’s belly.

    Can`t disagree.

    Insult added to injury.

  4. Paul67 if Celtic knew someone was plotting behind our backs

Why were they not sacked ????

What contingency planning did the board have in place ??

    Another veiled dig at BR

I detest the way he left

    But

He gave us an unbeaten season, 8 consecutive trophies, and put over £30min into our bank account, talking of which

We had over £45min the bank added £9m from a management team which left in Feb, and have added a further £25m

That equates to over £75m in my world

    Who didn’t know we had

DeVries (est. £500k per annum ?)

    Izzeguire (500k pa ?)

    Boyata ((£1m pa ?)

    Gamboa (£500k pa ? )

    Lustig (£1.25m pa ?)

    Allen (£500k pa ? )

All out of contract end May ?

    Add KT (£1m pa ?? )

    Then add the loanees

Benkovic (£1m pa includes loan fee ?)

Toljan (£1m pa incl fee ?)

Burke (£1.5m pa incl fee ?)

Weah (500k pa incl fee ?)

    Then we have removed

    Compper ( £1m pa ?)

    Mulumba (£500k pa ?)

Thats nearly £10 million as an estimate off the annual wage bill ??

We have spent £10m – anyone think this has been paid up front ???

    Probably added (estimates)

    Connell (£500k pa ?)

    bolingoli (£500k pa ?)

    Julian (£1m pa )

    We will have added

Shved and Bayo salary (£1.5m pa combined ?)

So we probably have over £60m in Bank

And reduced annual player spend by around £7m pa to date

Like NFL I believe we need to move more players on

    Hendry, Millar, Ralston,

I also believe in reducing squad size

    But

    And it’s a big but

I want us to invest in the best quality we can attract, on this smaller squad and give a decent chance at earning the £40m Champions league bounty each year

We have not planned for this or even attempted to achieve this level of ambition

Who is to blame for this failure ???

There should have been a short / medium and long term strategy to get us this level if reward

Setting aside our budget and squad should continue to dominate Scottish football

Brendan Rodgers is the third best Celtic manager in my lifetime, only Jock Stein and Martin O’Neill were better than him. His vilification on here is shameful.

  8. Forgot to add

    As a guess

We will be saving over £3m pa on the management team set up ??

We would have known Congerton plans

It took us until July to appoint a short term head of recruitment ( is that his title) on a short term or fixed term contract)

  9. Celtic fans need leaders

in 2014 during another Lawwell inspired shambles , Spin and Pr were employed

hois good man paul 67 blooded about circling wagons etc and was 1st to reveal the “in ronny we trust”, straight out a PR company . lawwell shaky peg became a bit more secure

todays leader is a shocker, does paul 67 want celtic to improve or is he firmly on the side of Peter lawwell

    clear its the latter

there is no doubt we need a leader to start to remove Peter lawwell

    #lawwellout

  10. Wonder how much we now save on not having to pay out Champions league bonus money to the players and staff ???

setting free the bears for Res. 12 & Oscar Knox on 15th August 2019 9:58 pm

    MIT

We were betrayed by our club’s dealings with Res 12

We can give that issue continued precedence, against the overwhelming indifference of our support, or we can fight for the 9iar that is available to us.

We all have to make a choice on that

I fervently wish that the appetite was there to make the Ibrox mob and the SFA suffer in the courts but I do not see that appetite shared.

Meantime, there is a league to be won and that is definitely winnable I want us to win it.

So, keep on calling out the custodians for their failures re Res 12 but support the team that has given us 8iar in their quest to reach 9.

    =============================

There is a Catch 22 in that approach in that Res12 needs equal support.

It is not obvious as long as the team is on course for 9iar, but if the rules are bent during the coming season as they clearly have been by SFA in the past to favor TRFC , then not supporting Res12 with equal vigor is not supporting the team.

Of course if the rules are somehow applied fairly we will be ok. However if we lose points to dodgy decisions or players to dodgy disciplinary decisions, then will the indifference evaporate.

  13. DELANEYS DUNKY we have qualified for CL twice twice i think in last ten years

the two years were Pl was told to take a back seat by BR was the years we qualified

Br was a snake, he was no celtic fan, but he took us from having stands closed to full houses again

the stands were closed because fans had enough of lawwell

  14. Circle the wagons ?

And blow away any opposition who think they may challenge our dominance in Scotland these next few years

Plus plan now for a champions league qualifying challenge next season

  15. For a season or two I have thought the “young team” would be panicking if we lost a league … but since Tuesday it’s the “old timers” the “centenary bhoys” the Celtic “fans” who lived through the bad times …. ffs … Tuesday was shoite, Neil Lennon picked a “shoite” team and still could have won … I have read about as bad as Partizan when Jackie scored 4 and we went out on away goals ??? Not sure how many leagues or cups we won back when Jackie Dzenowsku (sic) scored 4 goals and we still went out …. “we” are not a champions league (CL) team… we try and get to the CL that we all moan about, the big teams go straight in, then want more money to beat teams in our own league (without the moaning) … guess what … football is sport and sometimes the big guy doesn’t win… moan about PSG then the inverted snobbery we are better than “Cluj” … again Tuesday was shoite but maybe some have had too many good days to understand you sometimes have too have bad days

    #SydneyTims PC is overworked :-)

  16. Auidheid resolution 12 was a god send to peter lawwell

it kept the focus away from him, he was and is never going to help you as he has his eyes on a nice job and SFA or Uefa in retirement and no way was he going to rock the boat

but once again again a godsend and boy did his mates in CQN milk it especially paul67 who mentioned again and again and helped you out, why? because if we concentrate on the old club, PL can quietly get on with ensuring his pension is secure, he is a leech who has no intention of making our team better

if as stated he could sell the whole 1st team and pitch under our manger to secure his bonus, he would

you have been had and its time to do something about it

Jock and Martin worked in Celtic`s interests.

All the evidence suggests that Brendan worked in his own.

    IMHO

Brendan used Celtic as a stepping stone.

    A stop gap.

What Tim minded coach would lend a player to the huns ?

    You`re right , of course.

However , any competent coach could have achieved domestically what Brendan did with the advantages , personnel and financial, which we hold.

Have the wheels fell off ?

We have made 2 out of the last 6 CL group stages … we (in my opinion) aren’t a champions league team .. is it so bad that our entitlement to be at the top table has not been earned ? It is a vicious circle we want the best players we can get … in fact we can’t even get the best that want to ply their trade in the Spl .. we moan about where we play, we moan about not being in the champions league… but if we get there we then moan about getting humped by Barca, PSG and the other actual champions league teams then we moan about that … a lot of moaning for a very successful Celtic team :-)

  26. Business, any business, should be forced to look at itself in the whole and in specific areas from time to time.

Business analysis and the implementation of a strategy, and then the review of that strategy and how it was implemented are all part of good business management.

Such analysis makes the business owners think and adjust to what might be right, and more importantly what might just plain wrong and out of kilter.

There have been various articles and comments today about the lack of a proper scouting and recruitment team at Celtic, and in another blog a well known and prominent Celtic fan has commented that other teams make full use of proven algorithms and scientific forecasting technology when recruiting players. This latter practice is apparently now common practice among the biggest clubs in Europe.

Such technology costs money but is not that expensive.

Another well known Celtic fan with good insider knowledge of the club has said that the scouting system is being addressed and that soon we will have far more boots on the ground in terms of quality Celtic scouts reporting directly back into the club so that we can make approaches for players quicker and with greater intel — something that should have happened long ago.

I was told that the cost of this entire new scouting system would be met from us having the equivalent of one less squad player. Not a first team player who merits a first team place week in week out, but a squad player.

With that in mind, and remembering my comments about business analysis at the start of this post, the following article makes for interesting reading and must surely raise some questions in the minds of even the most ardent of fans?

I would not have left Celtic for Leicester, if I was in Brendan’s position, but I will not decry his legacy. He gave me 30 months joy that I had never experienced before as a Celtic supporter. I also grew up with his Scotstoun and Knightswood relatives. He is a good Tim. His departure pains me and them, still.

Peter Lawell had the chance to go to Arsenal a good number of years ago for a bigger salary but said “no thanks” … although don’t think he was getting £75k @ week … is Peter more of a Celtic fan ???

  29. GFTB

all the clubs we have lost to in CL qualifying have a fraction of our turnover

we have had a free route to CL groups via champions route, not once since that has introduced have we played a team with a greater turnover than us. they are all run as football clubs with little chance of going into any real debt. we are run as a balance sheet 1st and football club about 4th

there are teams every year in CL that come in from qualifying and those teams dont win the league every year. we do so we should be in CL every year as we play clubs with a fraction of our income

But!!! we are never ready for CL qualifying we do our transfer on last day of windows , which is normally too late. poor planning

i see that is to change but normally CEO in charge of failures should walk
