Time to circle the wagons

528

We all needed to get Tuesday night out of our system, but we must also put the result behind us and not allow it to bleed into the rest of the campaign.  Every game is important in the coming weeks, even the home cup-tie against Dunfermline, which in different circumstances would be viewed as an opportunity to exercise the squad.

Dunfermline, presumably AIK Stockholm, Hearts, AIK and Newco await.  We cannot afford to wallow in permanent introspective.  We need to get our act together and get on with it.

Five days ago, I was feeling good about the start to the season.  We had scored 12 goals in two league games, last season we scored seven in seven.  For all Neil made mistakes on Tuesday, he is not plotting behind our backs.  The manager, players and board will feel this as much as we do.  If things go against us in the coming weeks, you will know how alone we are.

Time to circle the wagons.

  1. Good morning friends and a Big Happy (albeit wet and blustery) Friday to you all. Tomorrow we go again.

  2. Good morning CQN from a rain soaked Garngad

Jobo your team from last night is the one I would go with over the next 5 games, get the players used to each other and formation.

Probably our strongest team at this moment, but I suppose Lenny sees Cal Mac in a wide left/ back position and MJ/Morgan as our strongest as he played them in the most important game of season so far. I also fear that he will start that line up at the bigot dome. With no lessons learned.

    love the line

I estimate Peter Lawwell’s total remuneration since he joined Celtic as CEO to be at least £15,424,356. His initial package at the start was around £249,000. Roughly around 0.35% of turnover. His total earnings for this past season was probably around 4.5% of turnover. Our average turnover under his tenure is around £68M. Slightly less than the actual amount for his first season in 2003/4. One thing is for sure, he is no genius at growing the business.

No logic whatsoever apart from my own view … that’s how the internet works … please do not believe everything you read online, especially from me :-)

But Celtic fans I interact with in real life aren’t as annoyed or militant as some online … raging about getting beaten / put out of CL but for many it is not the end of their Celtic supporting days… apologies if the 5% is not accurate, again it is a blog and many many posts are way off the mark but I thought we were allowed to bump our gums on here in words

  10. Had a wee look at our fixture list. If we do make the Europa League, our following league games then move to the Sunday.

2 away games have already been moved for TV anyway (Livingston and Aberdeen). The other 4 that would move are Killie, Motherwell and Hibs (All home) and Ross Co (away).

I assume tickets for Thursday will go on sale today. Please, Celtic, don’t miss the chance of a wee bit of goodwill here – £20 a head should result in a decent crowd. Remember, “we don’t need the money” ;-)

  11. Keeping a low profile and doing a fair bit of surfing since Tuesdays result you kinda get an idea what our club would be like if we fail to win the league this season..Peter and Desmond take note.use some of that bank balance in this window please.

  12. Celtic Underground article really highlights the damage Lawwell has done to the club and continues to do so.

He is destroying our club from within due to a combination of egotistical control and personal greed.

With Boli not playing at left back we lost 4 goals at home and lost the game 4-3.

Am I missing something here, or is football really more complicated than that por cierto.

Been saying for the past few days that this supporter implosion isn’t specifically about going out of the UCL. Underlying issue is fear we are not doing enough to get 9 and 10. Its a valid concern imo.

  17. Does anyone think that Desmond will change the way he runs Celtic by changing the CEO? por cierto.

  18. 3 days later, I thought I’d be feeling better but I was wrong. Maybe I’m spending too much time on the internet reading every bloody story & article but I am starting to get the fear for the season ahead.

We need players badly, and we are not playing the players we brought in. WTF is happening.

Luca too light weight needs bulking up, Boli & Julien not settling, unsuitable for Scottish game & Shved gets 5 minutes scores a beauty & immediately sent back to oblivion.

In the real world, Lenny decides CalMac would make a good full back, Mikey is no longer a kid & Morgan is the answer to our prayers .

Over in Hades, the Huns have brought in 10 players and they are actually playing them and so far they are doing OK.

  23. POR CIERTO on 16TH AUGUST 2019 9:05 AM

Before the season started we knew we had to replace an entire first pick back four.

We also knew sevco would would spend every penny they had (and then some) to stop the nine, it’s what they do. All we had to do to meet the challenge was to push the boat out, nothing crazy, but we have the firepower to blow them and teams like Cluj out the water.

We failed to replace the players we lost. Yes we bought defenders, but inexplicably don’t play them. We play our best midfielder in defence in a champions league qualifier. That’s why Cluj scored four, and that’s why we’ll struggle until our defence is fixed.

  24. Lucky Cody

    That’s exactly it.

See with the troubles that erupted over at Sevco, Liquidation, followed by 4 to 5 years out with the top flight.

The pathway opened right up, for Peter Lawell and Co. For our club to sweep everything before them with ease, whilst setting off on a path of taking more out than they put in.

Entitlement, greed, negligence, arrogance, ignorance, the lot

And when Sevco finally reached the Scottish Premiership, Lawell and Co, were so far down the road with their strategy, that they have continued to plod the same path.

The very fact that the 2 teams are practically neck and neck now…. in itself, is an utter disaster. We should be light years ahead, in every way. And I get our finances are far superior, but its the football on the park that counts, and we have been neglecting that, in my opinion since the invincible treble season.

  25. SOUTHSIDE

I concur re signings, but, our defence did alright in Romania did it not? por cierto.

In other news Rangers need to stomp up the initial £444k or so owes to Ashley today.

I see that Michael Gannon at the Record has been briefed by somebody at the Club that this is all Brendan Rodgers fault and he dismantled a recruitment process and team that took 9 years to build.

Who authorised that change and where they correct to disagree with Rodgers?

Brexit shows us that no matter the evidence in front of people they still vote like Turkeys for Christmas and support their executioners.

Celtic have a treble treble and £40m in the bank. Far from having a poor set of saleable players we have a multitude. If we had replaced the defence incrementally rather than in one summer period we may be sitting here still in the Champions League.

Again as a reminder Rodgers wanted a right back last summer. Gamboa was a low value purchase and we don’t know if he was meant to be a back up or a dice throw. This was done before Rodgers brought in Congerton. Rodgers then wanted Piccini and Castange. He wanted Schar we paid a million and that again in wages for Commper but did Neil Lennon not pay that and more for Boerrigter during these halcyon days of the allegedly blissful recruitment process we had. It’s just that a big boy stole Lawwells piece and ran away with it! He tried to reign it last summer with delay after delay and manoeuvrings behind each other’s back but Rodgers was so well connected that he knew what Lawwell was up to. Neither man was advancing you or Is best wishes and to this day we are still seeing Lawwell conduct a smear campaign against Rodgers. It’s schoolboy stuff for multi millionaires.

This isn’t a pine for Rodgers by any means. I’m not about to invoke a siege and request the return of Rodgers and a bag of cans – far from it. The man was an idealist when it came to playing teams better than us. He may also have come unstuck this season against Rangers and Hearts again on a few occasions playing the deep passing game that subjected us to self inflicted pain. Europe was a shambles inflicted by a belligerence to his ideology. You can progress the club by playing more cautiously but he wasn’t for that.

Transfers and recruitment are the single biggest issue for this club. One man controls it.

There is zero chance that Dermot Desmond will change the leadership of the club before *IAR is settled. Such a change, on a threshold of history, would increase risk not reduce it.

PL will go of his own volition once *IAR is settled. It’ll be a sharp exit by the backdoor and fast black to Siberia if it ends at 8. If it reaches 10 there’ll be some basking in the light before a managed transition.

Haven’t read that article but yeah, no manager should have the power to dismantle an entire scouting operation which presumably had been built up and tweaked ever since the days of Fergus. A bit alarming to read suggestions that we have one scout in mainland Europe.

Also, bang on about Rodgers being an idealist playing teams better than us. One of the reasons I was happy enough with Lenny for the job. Lets hope he can learn from his mistakes, and quickly…

  34. I think the criticism surrounding Brendan Rodgers is that this was his “dream job” and “not a stepping stone” when that’s exactly what it was. He made major changes to Celtic and then jumped ship taking many of those people with him. Clearly, we haven’t recovered from that. However, that’s the boards’ responsibility to appoint a new director of football.

  35. mullet and co 2 on

Who identified Arzani? Who wanted to sign him and who didn’t? Who picks the team?

Does Neil Lennon rate Sinclair as a player who is better than Morgan on the left wing or has he been told not to pick him?

Morgan will be a good player but not as a left winger by the way.

So we invoke the additional year of Sinclair last contract but we hawk him around the second tier of English football at the request of Lawwell who wants a fee for him (too high?) and he wants him off the wage bill.

Has the person who decided to give Sinclair the additional year made a £1.5m mistake? After all he will now stay until January at least. If we wanted him off the wage bill we could have let him go rather than hoping he would be open to a move and be obliging on going to whoever paid Celtics requested fee. Instead we now have an unhappy player moping around the squad bleeding negativity.

This is no different to Bobo Balde or Kenny Miller or Stan Petrov. Even McGeady was asset managed out the door to Russia. Would Lawwell have taken less money for Virgil if it hadn’t been for Deila refusing to let him go earlier?

How much is Boyata on now compared to what Celtic could have offered him? I’m not saying we should have kept him but we messed that up with delayed contract offers a way back in January 2018 when he should have been sorted out.
