Time to pair Lustig and VVD in central defence

2168

This afternoon’s friendly against Tottenham Hotspur gives Ronny Deila a dilemma.  Last weekend he played a second string against St Pauli, but with things going so wrong in Warsaw on Wednesday, the pressure is on to pull a game plan together which will work at Murrayfield.

Our other concern is that the squad, without Ambrose, Brown and Forrest, is already looking threadbare.  We simply can’t afford an injury to afflict Commons, Griffiths, Stokes, Johansen, van Dijk, Matthews, Lustig or Izaguirre.

The suggestion was put to me this week that we should play Lustig with van Dijk in central defence on Wednesday.  Lustig can play there, but would Ronny trust them on such an important occasion without a warm-up game?

If I was taking a risk with first-team players this afternoon it would be to pair these two.  If we’re going to get the required result on Wednesday the most important area of the team to get right is the defence.

McGregor for Stokes (with Commons in the hole) and that would be my lineup. Need goals and that lot will get you goals. Would be telling Stokes to go out and cement is place, needs to be really fired up.

You’re bang on. Two up front with a diamond midfield is the way Celtic should play.

    Suits the players available.

  3. anyone else fed upand embarassed that our club is allowed to be the buttt of jokes so as to appease the board in their policy of never spend, i could go on a real rant but there is no point anymore, if the custodians cannot see we are an embarrasment then we are in real trouble

  4. Disappointed to see Pukki play today.

I would still have him starting next week. Pukki is like Sammi….he’s not prolific but can score goals at any level.

Stokes is a great SPFL scorer but when he steps up to European or international level he is ineffective. He has 0 goals from 8 internationals and 2 goals from 19 European games with Celtic. Pukki has 8 international goals from 32 appearances. He also has 2 European goals for Celtic already. In his career he has 7 European goals from 19 games (far better than Stokes). This also includes 3 goals against Schalke i.e. they weren’t all against Reykavik level teams

If someone has the team for today can they put it up….

    Thanks…

County one up… For the betters amongst us….

I cannot understand why some people seem to want Stokes in the team. He’s never done it in Europe and is too slow. His decision making is dreadful. He scored the odd goal at league level but that’s it.

HT – winning the league and a decent run to maybe last 16 in the EL would be a good first season for Ronny. Develop the players and his tactics to be better prepared for the following season’s CL campaign.

If we somehow get past Legia on Wednesday(!), I still wouldn’t be that confident of winning the CL play-off ! Not without a couple of quality additions to the first team….cough!

it wasnt stagnation last season, i can agree with that at all.

More goals, bigger wins, some really good individual performances.

The stagnation is at board level.

I hope Ronni comes good, but serious changes were not required on day1.

Half a season of learning his new environment, his team strength and weaknesses, and in particular, PICK A WINNING TEAM, for all competitions.

He isnt radical , or particularly innovative, so far.

    Why go with Jonny ?

Why play players out of position ?

He is making daft decisions for a Manager.

I hope he proves me wrong on wednesday, but the signs where there last week, that he didnt really know what he was doing.

I read before, his old club believed in him to get it right in the longterm.

so they let him have a long losing run.

Two defeats at Celtic, and he will be slaughtered,

    he needs to wisen up.

Play to the availble players strengths. Dont put them in positions that make them weaker.

He is doing my head in allready

  9. thanks for the info.

the conversation came up last night in the irish club.

now to put the hun in his place.

ps. a couple of thems in the club but usually good banter till he got int us a wee bit about Wednesday.

  10. would that be the same stokes who provided a peice of brilliance against karagandy that won the game ?

aye, i would pick him before the youngster.

You’ve completely disregarded my disregard for Commons in the hole! Opinions eh…

McGregor was arguably our best player in Warsaw(Granted not a hotly contested award). He scored a lot of goals from midfield for Notts County last season. Until Griffiths came in last year, it was Commons and Stokes up front for most of the season. For me, Commons and Stokes are too similar, best position is as a 2nd striker(as is Pukki for that matter). None of them can play wide. Commons doesn’t fit in to the formation RD wants to play. But as our most dangerous player he must play, so tailor the formation to suit. Anyway off to watch the game.

  12. Almost ready to go. Swore I would Ignore today’s game, but I can’t help myself. COYBIG

Was referring to the club taking the new approach, not just the manager or other parts.

I’d disagree about the stagnation, we most certainly are, in fact it’s a long slow demise, unless something majorly different happens.

  14. Someone mentioned the Our Streets programme last night on the bbc.

was about duke street, a really good watch.

as was last weeks about moray place in edinburgh.

catch it on the iplayer if your interested.

Think he wanted to play as it will be at home.

I agree with what you say about KC, just think that’s where he ends up, and Stokes would end up playing the channels if you stick him up front. I think that’s what RD is going for anyway. A striker with a second striker/number 10 and a wide man/winger (who are able to change sides).

That’s what I’d go for in the modern game anyway.

Just another small point to consider, could be nonsense, but maybe not.

We all know big Charlie has been slow and sometimes a liability in europe. We’ve seen the movie before, eh ?

    Has Ronny ?

  17. normanstreet49 on

Poor defending… Simple cut back and lad had time at about 14 yards to smash home….. CG no chance….

  18. BCW,

is Ronni hasnt seen the charlie movie, then someone inside the coaching regime should be telling him, I would have hoped the overall “media/video” analysis they have of every game, every player would be a reference point for him.

I dont think he has done enough homework.

someone also mentioned they left the legia game in dublin with some time to go.

    I aint impressed at all.

Is he an Ebbe or a Neil ?

I cant shake a feeling that the movie is the one we have all seen before.

I like listening to Hartley, talks about creative football. but knowing that its built on a solid defence.

  19. BCW/TTTT

I know what your both saying but how many times have we managed to raise our game in the CL against sides that in reality we shouldn’t have beaten?

Perpetually we risk that hammering but so often we’ve risen to the challenge.
