Time to revise some plans

474

Having watched previous generations of Celtic teams park the bus at Barcelona I’m not one to criticise Hamilton Accies when they do the same at Celtic Park. They put on an effective defensive performance but although the game got nervy as Celtic defended a one goal lead in the final minutes, Accies were never able to pass the ball well enough to make a genuine attempt at goal.

The only goal of the game came from a deep run by Moussa Dembele, who had dropped behind Tom Rogic, before sprinting forward to collect a pass from the Aussie. The Accies back line were concentrating on catching Leigh Griffiths offside but didn’t have the response necessary to match Dembele’s run.

It was great play from Rogic, Dembele and Griffiths, who remained in control to finish. That aside, the incredibly high standard of passing Celtic have achieved in recent weeks wasn’t matched. That’s football, it’s impossible for players, or anyone else for that matter, to perform with machine-like consistency, even John Lennon wrote the lyric, “I am a walrus”.

As well as experiencing varying levels of performance, we are now far enough into the season for teams to face Celtic with some revised plans. We play three at the back in possession, so Premiership teams push three men up when Craig Gordon has the ball, forcing the keeper to kick to the halfway line, where possession is often lost. This happened against Aberdeen, Motherwell and Accies in recent weeks.

Brendan Rodgers is miles ahead of his competition, but elements of games between now and the break will be more like chess matches than football. Not least our visit to Hamilton’s artificial surface on Christmas Eve. In the whole of 2016 only Motherwell beat Accies in consecutive games, and indication of an astonishing level of resilience by a club without the resources normally associated with senior football. Coo coo ca choo.

I honestly think you have better things to do with your time my friend.

I’m not being evasive I promise but things are still being ironed out. There was a meeting with some of the other representative groups on Monday in St Mary’s and the Trust met with Celtic today to discuss details. We’re meeting again in early January prior to the first meeting which will take place in February.

It was great to hear from the club that the feedback they’ve had has been entirely supportive.

Yes, I’ve read the stories about the CQN corner, see you there. I’ll be there first and wait for you. Trust me,security will dance foot to foot in agitation until we meet. I have that effect on pretend tough guys.

Thankyou for this, I appreciate it.

and we think the money in football is obscene (okay, by ‘we’, I mean ‘me’) …

an American media company is has paid about $1 Billion for an 18% stake in Formula 1, and is now looking to buy the balance.

    shocking..

I enjoyed your analysis of these issues. As usual, something that starts out as a comment on the blog ends up being a complicated debate. And the blog is probably not the best format for complicated debate – too much room for misinterpretation etc. IMHO.

Just one point ( and then I’ll leave it!) –

“Ron Atkinson was lost to the game. Malky McKay was out of work for 3 years. People who sexually assault and scar people spend less time out of work.”

There are probably lots of examples that back this up. However, this is a consequence of and not a punishment for the behaviour. Many jobs require a disclosure certificate. Anyone with a conviction will not be allowed to gain one of these. MM however has not been convicted to my knowledge (despite having committed an offence I believe). It’s interesting that MM has been out of work for 3 years. I find it difficult to believe that he hasn’t been offered something in football – maybe just not something that pays near to what he wants, having previously been on an EPL salary. He’s may have had plenty of 2nd chances already – we don’t know. One thing’s for sure – he ain’t gonna starve….

    A sensible post.

At the time we signed LG I was appalled and made my feelings known on here. You were, from memory, the one person who disagreed but took the trouble to understand my stance and the reasoning behind my thinking.

Another poster pointed out that possibly Celtic was just what LG needed.

I was wrong and the poster was right.

Celtic have given LG a second chance. I think as a man he’s taken it.

  7. Interesting debate on rehibilitation, very good enlightened posts.

It is worth pointing out though, that when working with vulnerable groups and individuals the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) or Scottish equivalent will be used.

This in effect does not prevent rehabilitation… offenders getting assistance to change and get on with their lives, but it does insure that no chances will be taken in respect of vulnerable people.

Think in this respect the balance is correct.

Your views on Leigh at the time were steadfast (not boys brigade). But articulate and smart.

Was it Livibhoy who championed Leigh ?

While I’m here, let me say I’ve some interest in European competiition in spring 2017.

I’ll follow and watch, when I can, Legia Warsaw, Happoel Be’er Sheva and Borussia Munchengladbach in their Europa League ties. Good luck to them all.

Couldn’t care less about Champions’ League games now. Next one of that failed experiment I’ll see is Celtic’s first qualifier in July.

I would be fairly confident that Malky McKay was not offered a football job don south in the immediate aftermath of Vincent tan releasing his club phone texts. He was a toxic appointment as a consequence.

Of course some amateur or semi-pro clubs may have been delighted to have him volunteer his services and I do not know what he did, apart from his Diversity Course, during that period but I never heard he was in the running for any managerial job in the top 4 English divisions. He is a young-ish man with a family to support and a seeming talent for managing footballers. I think he is entitled to seek a middling appointment (this is not a top job he is going for) on the way back to fuller rehabilitation. One thing’s for sure, he is unlikely to get a 3rd chance in the profession.

I had similar doubts to you. It was Livibhoy who made the persuasive arguments in favour of Leigh. He convinced me and, I believe, yourself too. And he has been shown to be right so far.

    Chairbhoy

Quite right to point that out. I was shocked to find that there were so many coaches in Scottish youth football who do not have the clearance checks. All the coaches, including myself, at my son’s youth football club had to get the clearance.

There is a lot of red tape involved in Youth Sport but that is the last area where corners should be cut.

  12. I came on this site about 10 years ago.It still has some good posters. However like other sites, time catches uo.Twists @ Turns, BRTH,even Kojo and his alter-ego brought a breadth trhat has to my mind been missing.

Auldheid posts when neccessary, i think, and the RES12 guys deserve an article on their own.

I miss the quiz nights (surprised myself sometimes) and the Friday till late music bash, tho it goes on still.

Therefore I propose we send out an SOS for Joshyboy and Declan.

    That’ll bring them back.

  21. Level 5 hard at work today, spinning the MacKay appointment into an attempt to make Stewart Regan look incompetent and weak. These people are afraid.

  22. SFTB @ 10:05 PM,

Yeah, that is surprising, thought it became best practise many years ago and strange that depending on the person/coaches role it may not be a statutory requirement.
