Time to revise some plans

474

Having watched previous generations of Celtic teams park the bus at Barcelona I’m not one to criticise Hamilton Accies when they do the same at Celtic Park. They put on an effective defensive performance but although the game got nervy as Celtic defended a one goal lead in the final minutes, Accies were never able to pass the ball well enough to make a genuine attempt at goal.

The only goal of the game came from a deep run by Moussa Dembele, who had dropped behind Tom Rogic, before sprinting forward to collect a pass from the Aussie. The Accies back line were concentrating on catching Leigh Griffiths offside but didn’t have the response necessary to match Dembele’s run.

It was great play from Rogic, Dembele and Griffiths, who remained in control to finish. That aside, the incredibly high standard of passing Celtic have achieved in recent weeks wasn’t matched. That’s football, it’s impossible for players, or anyone else for that matter, to perform with machine-like consistency, even John Lennon wrote the lyric, “I am a walrus”.

As well as experiencing varying levels of performance, we are now far enough into the season for teams to face Celtic with some revised plans. We play three at the back in possession, so Premiership teams push three men up when Craig Gordon has the ball, forcing the keeper to kick to the halfway line, where possession is often lost. This happened against Aberdeen, Motherwell and Accies in recent weeks.

Brendan Rodgers is miles ahead of his competition, but elements of games between now and the break will be more like chess matches than football. Not least our visit to Hamilton’s artificial surface on Christmas Eve. In the whole of 2016 only Motherwell beat Accies in consecutive games, and indication of an astonishing level of resilience by a club without the resources normally associated with senior football. Coo coo ca choo.

Just they way I see it, do you see it differently?

    ———————————————————————–

I think people who have convictions for child abuse should not be allowed to work with children again, because no matter how many courses they go on etc. I doubt if that will correct their behaviour. The risk is too great.

Should people who have written racist, sexist and homophobic messages be allowed to black people, women and gay people?

    ==========

    Natknow

This is just my opinion but I believe any human being with can be educated with regards racism, sexism and homophobia albeit the individual needs to open their minds somewhat. Same with sectarianism.

With peodophiles and peodophilia my understanding is that with the individuals their sexual preference is not learned but is a natural instinct to them like eating when they are hungry. I do not believe you can educate someone’s sexual preference out of them whether straight, gay, lesbian, bi-sexual or pedophilia (if that is the correct term). Some may disagree but for me it is a non starter.

Therefor pedophiles should never knowingly be allowed near children unsupervised and preferably never let near them however unlikely\impossible that may be to police.

People who hold sexist, racist, homophobic, sectarian etc. views as part of their reeducation should spend time in the company of those they hold strong views or hate against to help educate them that they are just people like them.

    ——————————————————————-

With regard to paedophiles, I think you are stating the same as me. That this is behaviour that cannot be changed even with treatment. Others may argue that it is treatable but for me, the risk is too great to allow people with this condition any kind of contact with kids again. So, I had 2 points –

    1. I don’t believe there is a cure.

    2. Even if medics believe there is, the risk of allowing unsupervised contact after treatment is not worth taking.

With regard to the other kinds of behaviour we’re discussing (racism, sexism, homophobia), then I believe these are issues for which education is a possible answer. However, how do you know that once a person has attended educational classes, their racism (or whatever) has been cured? That’s impossible to prove of course.

I don’t know what questions were asked at interview by the SFA, but they certainly don’t have a good record. Bear in mind that Gordon Smith, who is now all over TV and radio as a guest talking about the child abuse in football scandal, was on a platform making jokes about Celtic Boys Club not long ago. An SFA Chief Executive…

  3. I think Phil is getting carried away with this roof business.

Looks simple to me: work needs done, they are probably lining up contractors to come in over winter, and any nets are part of this scaffolding.

The work is necessary, but the roof doesn’t pose a danger to the public in the meantime, hence the safety certificate.

They want to minimise the public appearance of any work because – well, they are the people – and fixing a gammy roof looks a bit common. Hence the lack of public response.

Phil’s looking for a smoking gun here where there simply isn’t one in my opinion.

If the attacker is in an offside position when the ball is played and it comes off a defender and falls to the attacker, he is offside – he was when the initial ball was played.

However, if an attacker is in an office position and a defender plays the ball and it falls to the attacker, he is not offside.

Nat- just pointing out how your posts looked- as you guessed I have no issues with him getting the job- he’s paid the price and accepted he did wrong- no need to crucify him or to continue to punish him for the rest of his life. He knows he is being watched particularly by people wanting him to fail, so he will be expected to behave to a standard even higher than the rest of us.

    ————————————————-

How my posts looked to you…

So we’re back to the question I asked earlier – if a paedophile receives treatment, and doctors say he is cured, and if he apologises etc. for his behaviour, then is he (or she) OK to work again with kids? The crime is much more serious of course, but this is about the principle of whether people are always due a 2nd chance…

BTW – I don’t think we are disagreeing much here…

Personally I think there are many more people that could do the job McKay has been offered and I’m surprised the SFA are taking the risk

I agree that that is a belief of many but it is not one that I concur with.

Many many many abused children do not turn out to become peodophiles and without knowing or ever having looked at the stats I’d bet it would be in the higher percentile of those who are abused that do not turn out to be abusers and peodophiles in turn. I do though take your point and judge this area to be a more difficult area to correctly form an strong opinion on without sight of all the facts and figures. That said, if abused and growing up knowing and subsequently learning through natural maturity that what was enacted upon you as an individual was wrong then why would that process not be enough of an education for any abused individual to know what they in turn enact on another child is to be wrong and unacceptable? It truly is beyond my understanding but far more complicated than the black and white of a peodophile who’s natural sexual preference these acts are. But then I do wonder if the abuse cycle again is just a easy and ready excuse for an action people simple know is wrong!

That’s why it is a very difficult debate; the difficulty with stats is that we don’t know the true level of abuse as many victims never come forward and many perpetrators are never caught.

The only thing we can really know is that it has devastating consequences!

  26. I do believe Malky McKay deserves a 2nd chance.

I also believe that, like Ron Atkinson before him, he was guilty of casual and callous racism with his mate.

Both have paid a high price for their offence.

If we campaign for young boys convicted under the OBaF Act to not have career altering consequences, then we have to apply the same generous tone of spirit to Malky and Ron.

There were never any tales of prejudicial behaviour or attitudes being publicly expressed in their work with footballers. In fact, Ron Atkinson was one of the best advocates for black footballers at a time when other managers and their clubs were discriminating against them by non-selection.

And yet, both were guilty of having private banter which revealed that they were willing to engage in such racist language and hadn’t learned that using such language produces a toxic seep into your thinking.

Ron Atkinson was lost to the game. Malky McKay was out of work for 3 years. People who sexually assault and scar people spend less time out of work.

It is quite possible that Malky, with his recent searing experiences, will be triply determined to crack down on any forms of prejudicial thinking if he is ever within earshot of it again.

I take Nat Know’s point about rehabilitation of sexual offenders. That is of a different scale and the consequences of those actions are of a much higher impact.

Some of us were of an adult age when we sang, in response to Rangers fans taunts to Paul Wilson, “I’d rather be a ****** than a hun”. Should we be never allowed to support again even though we all know we would condemn such chants now?

We all cheered Leigh Griffiths goal last night. But Leigh was charged with distasteful racist and discriminatory chanting against Rudi Skacel, and unlike the Tonev case, there was no doubt of his relishing his part in this action. Should Leigh be banned from football?

There are difficulties to the question but, overall, I am convinced that Malky McKay will earn his second chance. I am not convinced that Barry Bennell, Jim Torbett, or Jim McCafferty have earned our trust as rehabilitated. I doubt they would trust themselves.

The impact and consequences on the child is as you say the most important issue that should be focused on but dealing with known abusers\peodophiles in whatever walk of life they stride is important and the safety of the child and all children comes before any individual right of a known abuser\peodophile every day of the week. Safety first and IMO all known abusers\peodophiles should not be afforded the right to personal freedom to walk the same streets as children and those they have abused.
