Time to revise some plans

474

Having watched previous generations of Celtic teams park the bus at Barcelona I’m not one to criticise Hamilton Accies when they do the same at Celtic Park. They put on an effective defensive performance but although the game got nervy as Celtic defended a one goal lead in the final minutes, Accies were never able to pass the ball well enough to make a genuine attempt at goal.

The only goal of the game came from a deep run by Moussa Dembele, who had dropped behind Tom Rogic, before sprinting forward to collect a pass from the Aussie. The Accies back line were concentrating on catching Leigh Griffiths offside but didn’t have the response necessary to match Dembele’s run.

It was great play from Rogic, Dembele and Griffiths, who remained in control to finish. That aside, the incredibly high standard of passing Celtic have achieved in recent weeks wasn’t matched. That’s football, it’s impossible for players, or anyone else for that matter, to perform with machine-like consistency, even John Lennon wrote the lyric, “I am a walrus”.

As well as experiencing varying levels of performance, we are now far enough into the season for teams to face Celtic with some revised plans. We play three at the back in possession, so Premiership teams push three men up when Craig Gordon has the ball, forcing the keeper to kick to the halfway line, where possession is often lost. This happened against Aberdeen, Motherwell and Accies in recent weeks.

Brendan Rodgers is miles ahead of his competition, but elements of games between now and the break will be more like chess matches than football. Not least our visit to Hamilton’s artificial surface on Christmas Eve. In the whole of 2016 only Motherwell beat Accies in consecutive games, and indication of an astonishing level of resilience by a club without the resources normally associated with senior football. Coo coo ca choo.

I still have some reservations but by golly the Bhoy continues to grow as a man almost on a weekly basis!

  2. Scottish Ministers disturbed and concerned by Malky’s appointment. Good grief. As a citizen of this county I am appalled at your record in Government. Get your priorities right.

  3. What qualifies Malky Mackay to be SFA Performance Director? Leaving aside the baggage he carries, he was at best an average manager. Nothing special at Watford, got Cardiff promoted but they were struggling when he got sacked, and a flop at Wigan. As far as I know he hasn’t worked at any club in a similar role.

Will the SFA make public why the previous two incumbents left the role?

  5. Malky was interviewed for the Celtic job in the summer. I hear he came across well. I reckon Pedro aka the ‘Godfather’ of the Scottish game put a good word in Stewart Regan’s ear.

  9. Who espoused that Celtic could be just the thing for Leigh… no this chap perchance….;)

Neil Lennon has a fixer-upper with Leigh, a player he has taken a number of references for and believes he can turn into a productive Celtic player. The player’s personal history is something he has to put behind him now. I’ve read many comments on this subject over the last few days, with some empathy, but it’s just as well Twitter wasn’t around in the 60s, 70s or 80s. Some of our heroes from past eras have been more than a tad off-colour in my earshot.

Time for Leigh to get onto the field and do what he does best.

    Hail Hail

Aaaah! That wasn’t me, though blowing my own trumpet slightly I was in favour of the Griff…

    Hows about this one!?

“Griffiths will end up our top goal scorer this season! All the doubters will quickly change their minds once he starts doing the business on the field no doubt about it.

With regards to posts above, Celtic need to try bring in players who we can hold onto for many years or entire careers or at least have that spine of players. Leigh is that type of player. Its a nice plan to have players that cost peanuts and sell on for huge sums, but Celtic need to have players long term to consistently challenge in Europe.

Its must be sole destroying for Lennon sitting their thinking he has a player on his hands for example Hooper, Wanyama just for them to be sold on quickly although its part of the plan, VVD is the next one. Any manager would want to hold onto those players for years.

I sit here as a fan and say what if we kept Hooper and Wanyama where would the team be now would we still be in Europe this year and progressing etc etc?”

    Hail Hail

  16. Chairbhoy

Nope though that could have been a contender! :-)

Someone actually used the words that Celtic was just what LG needed.

  17. WHITEDOGHUNCH @ 11:43 PM,

Yeah… Loosing Gary was a big blow for Lenny imo.

Though I’ll take some convincing that Hooper wanted to stay.

When you look at our transfer activity and our European particpation during those Seasons, certainly NL wasn’t backed in the transfer market.

    Hail Hail

  18. HT @ 11:45 PM,

Just had a quick shifty and picked a random post… good one though. I had forgotten how unpopular LG was in many quarters.

Think there was actually a fierce debate after the 2015 Cup final when rumours abound that Leigh was coming. Could have been then.

Still, think he has done us and himself proud.

    Hail Hail & G’night…

I will pick up and pay for ACGR’s calendar on Saturday. Look forward to doin Dundee. :)

I think we both know where I’d rather have been! :-)

    Chairbhoy

I agree. As I said earlier I maintain my reservations but on the whole the Bhoy is doing good.

Chris Commons in the semi against sevco last year never tried a leg, he embarrassed the Celtic jersey, I’d never let him wear another one, he just completely laid down his tools and wandered around the park in the huff, and his wife had to much to say as well, aye ok we know about the charity work, but it came with a price, like other organisations at Celtic Park, it’s done with an agenda.

    This was posted yesterday.

TD67 constantly makes personal reference to me and The Celtic Trust with the obvious intent of initiating a reaction. I don’t because I still have faith in the intelligence of those who post here. I’m best saying nothing.

However, the post above epitomes, in my opinion, why the number of posts are diminishing.

Firstly, Commons didn’t even play in this game.

Secondly, does this make Brother Walfrid an attention seeker?
