Timely boost as Mackay-Steven signs pre-contract

1749

Delighted we have made the pre-contract signing of Gary Mackay-Steven.  Gary signed for Dundee United from Airdrie in 2011 as a 20-year-old and soon became a popular figure for United fans.  He has been one of several members of Jackie McNamara’s squad who has attracted attention this season and will be a loss to the former Celtic defender.

It’s all about the system

Gary is left-footed but can play on either side of the 3-behind-the-striker Ronny Deila likes to deploy.  He is industrious and has a bag of tricks that makes for a good highlights video on YouTube.

I watched him turn it on against Dundee on New Years’ Day, and fondly recall a virtuoso Scottish Cup performance at Ibrox, but I’m always reluctant to offer a recommendation on a player we’ve only seen against Celtic, or in the odd TV game.  The most encouraging part of this deal is that Celtic will have watched the player literally dozens of times – we want to get our first choice players, and we don’t want to be dependent on the recommendation of a foreign-based acquaintance.

United may consider cashing-in on the player this month, but I’m sure it won’t be for the £80k Sheffield United offered earlier this week.

This will be a timely boost ahead of tomorrow’s important game against Hamilton Accies, who I’ve watched a fair bit of this season.  They are a far better team than we thought they were went they left Celtic Park with a win in October, while their pitch provides a different challenge.

It’s as game I expect us to win but I’ll be happy when the result is in the bag.

Many thanks to everyone who booked tickets for the CQN11 St Patrick’s Night on Friday 13 March at the Kerrydale suite.  You can book at the bottom of this page, or email me if you’d like to hold a ticket, celticquicknews@gmail.com .

The event has been live for less than 24 hours and we are already well on the way to funding the school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals.

“Huge kudos for the efforts on behalf of such a worthy organisation as Mary’s Meals.

Malawi is one of the poorest nations in the world, and deserving of our help.

I’ll bet that when you set this up ten years ago you would never have imagined how much money would have been raised through it. Or even as a result of it,with contributors donating to more causes than are officially pushed on the site.

Wee Shay, for instance, and the LAST MAN STANDING competition.

Would the lads have been able to raise a couple of thousand for the wee fella without the networking on this site? Doubt it.

Or BRT&H with Vanessa, then the real success story of WEE OSCAR,but with the ultimately tragic ending.

    There are more,of course.”

On behalf of Shays family and friends let me offer to all CQNers, especially Marc, our sincere thanks and appreciation for the financial help you have provided thus far to give this little guy the fighting chance he surely deserves He is progressing but has a long way to go. So a heartfelt thanks to a unique bunch of lassies and laddies Hail Hail

GMS pe-signing must mean wee jamsie oot ra door at the end of the season. No way would you have both in the same starting XI.

One right, one left playing well would be a nightmare for any defence.

No chance Wee Jamesy will go.

    —————————————————————-

Nightmare for any defence? Aye especially ours unless you’re suggesting we play three at the back with Forrest and GMS on opprosite wings. Nah, ain’t going to happen.

Wee Jamesie will go and Borrigter will inherit the treatment table till we find another club stupid enough the pay him the money he’s on at CP.

That actually was the punchline to an old joke about the two Dariusz’s we’d signed at the time and how different there grasp of English was-

Dariusz Dziekanowski had picked up lots of English , what with being up at the dancing and all, and was pretty fluent.

Dariusz Wdowczyk , however, being married and the captain of Poland was a bit more of a sober chap and didn’t get out as much.

Accordingly , all he’d learned to say was ” Ffs , Anton! ”

    Still makes me laugh.

    Welcome to Celtic, Gary.

He will then be able to pick it off and add it to his boutique of formerly luxury brands.

He is a star at it,has made his fortune from it. Shaft the supplier, buy them, use his stores to mass-market.

  20. Let’s get GMS in now. Best for all parties if we do.

I feel our strategy of bringing in potential foreign stars of the future has ran its course.

Am now fed up with guys wanting to move on to a ‘big club’ like Arsenal, as Virgil will do either this window or next.

I’d like to get back to having most of our players wanting to stay at Celtic for a long time, with the odd departure to help finances. That probably mean having a strong Scottish base and I feel that there has been decent improvement in the Scottish players over the past few years.

I have noticed of late on CQN that a growing number of posters are commenting on talented Scottish players and on teams in our League playing attractive football. Personally, I find it reassuring that the MSSM line is being followed by fewer and fewer Celtic supporters .

I know supporters have the right to be critical but one of the reasons Paul set up this site was to combat the constant negativity of the MSSM on matters Celtic. That, I guess, is why his articles are nearly always positive. Good to see that more and more seem to be agreeing that positivity is good for our Club and if any negativity is required, then we can rely on the MSSM and pub conversation to provide it.

So Fish I now get. What about the tennis allusions?

  25. Very pleased with the signing of Gary Mackay Steven. Has been accused of inconsistency at times but what cant be denied is the technique and ability he has in his locker and at 24 years old the best has yet to come. Over his career with United and Airdrie he’s averaged a goal every 4 games and an assist every 3 games – i’d expect these stats to improve in a Celtic shirt.

Here’s hoping this is the beginning of Celtic’s new transfer market strategy which will see us sign from within and end the saga of signings like Pukki, Balde, Bangura, Boerrigter at the expense of missing out on young home-grown talent at a fraction of the cost.

Now let’s go and get Armstrong.

    Hail Hail
