Timely boost as Mackay-Steven signs pre-contract

Delighted we have made the pre-contract signing of Gary Mackay-Steven.  Gary signed for Dundee United from Airdrie in 2011 as a 20-year-old and soon became a popular figure for United fans.  He has been one of several members of Jackie McNamara’s squad who has attracted attention this season and will be a loss to the former Celtic defender.

It’s all about the system

Gary is left-footed but can play on either side of the 3-behind-the-striker Ronny Deila likes to deploy.  He is industrious and has a bag of tricks that makes for a good highlights video on YouTube.

I watched him turn it on against Dundee on New Years’ Day, and fondly recall a virtuoso Scottish Cup performance at Ibrox, but I’m always reluctant to offer a recommendation on a player we’ve only seen against Celtic, or in the odd TV game.  The most encouraging part of this deal is that Celtic will have watched the player literally dozens of times – we want to get our first choice players, and we don’t want to be dependent on the recommendation of a foreign-based acquaintance.

United may consider cashing-in on the player this month, but I’m sure it won’t be for the £80k Sheffield United offered earlier this week.

This will be a timely boost ahead of tomorrow’s important game against Hamilton Accies, who I’ve watched a fair bit of this season.  They are a far better team than we thought they were went they left Celtic Park with a win in October, while their pitch provides a different challenge.

It’s as game I expect us to win but I’ll be happy when the result is in the bag.

Many thanks to everyone who booked tickets for the CQN11 St Patrick’s Night on Friday 13 March at the Kerrydale suite.  You can book at the bottom of this page, or email me if you’d like to hold a ticket, celticquicknews@gmail.com .

The event has been live for less than 24 hours and we are already well on the way to funding the school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals.

“Huge kudos for the efforts on behalf of such a worthy organisation as Mary’s Meals.

Malawi is one of the poorest nations in the world, and deserving of our help.

I’ll bet that when you set this up ten years ago you would never have imagined how much money would have been raised through it. Or even as a result of it,with contributors donating to more causes than are officially pushed on the site.

Wee Shay, for instance, and the LAST MAN STANDING competition.

Would the lads have been able to raise a couple of thousand for the wee fella without the networking on this site? Doubt it.

Or BRT&H with Vanessa, then the real success story of WEE OSCAR,but with the ultimately tragic ending.

    There are more,of course.”

On behalf of Shays family and friends let me offer to all CQNers, especially Marc, our sincere thanks and appreciation for the financial help you have provided thus far to give this little guy the fighting chance he surely deserves He is progressing but has a long way to go. So a heartfelt thanks to a unique bunch of lassies and laddies Hail Hail

  3. I’m up visiting my two Aunts, both Celtic daft..They are both season ticket holders and are telling me they were both up at Celtic Park a week past Tuesday to queue up for tickets for the Inter Milan game, extra tickets for other family members.

One over 70 the other nearly.

Half past ten on the Monday night they stood till the ticket office opened on the Tuesday morning.

    Now that’s commitment….

Id say Tonev, Wakaso, Berget and Derk will be offski way before him or before he is ever considered to be flogged, both also play on opposite wings!

    No way will Berget go.

As others have said I thnk we’ll get him at the end of the Transfer Window for a fee.

I think it’s safe to say Koki Mizuno’s place is under threat.

GMS pe-signing must mean wee jamsie oot ra door at the end of the season. No way would you have both in the same starting XI.

One right, one left playing well would be a nightmare for any defence.

No chance Wee Jamesy will go.

Nightmare for any defence? Aye especially ours unless you’re suggesting we play three at the back with Forrest and GMS on opprosite wings. Nah, ain’t going to happen.

Wee Jamesie will go and Borrigter will inherit the treatment table till we find another club stupid enough the pay him the money he’s on at CP.

That actually was the punchline to an old joke about the two Dariusz’s we’d signed at the time and how different there grasp of English was-

Dariusz Dziekanowski had picked up lots of English , what with being up at the dancing and all, and was pretty fluent.

Dariusz Wdowczyk , however, being married and the captain of Poland was a bit more of a sober chap and didn’t get out as much.

Accordingly , all he’d learned to say was ” Ffs , Anton! ”

    Still makes me laugh.

@CelticTransfer1: Wigan midfielder Shaun Maloney’s proposed move to Premier League side Leicester City has collapsed after he failed to agree personal terms

Had this vision a la Big Cook Little Cook where Wee Shaun’s getting the tour and they show him the all important Physio room.

‘Bench too high!’ he squeals in a funny NE Doric (apols Cultsbhoy!)….. ‘No deal……..’

I still hope we sign him. Maybe less so than a week ago mind!

Some of our fans had decided he was a dud as soon as they heard he was coming from Stromsgodset. Some decided when he lost to Legia. A lot of these guys are waiting for a ‘told you so’ moment.

you forgot to mention the hordes that reckoned Ronny was genius even though they knew hee haw about him

some decided he was a dud after legia too…..

maybe something will happen to change that opinion……..

    Welcome to Celtic, Gary.

This is the type of fellow Ashley is, how is this even legal?

Sevco’s future? He’ll rip the sole out of that club

This manoeuvre,well-practiced and refined by Ashley may put the UK distribution arm of Diesel into financial difficulty.

He will then be able to pick it off and add it to his boutique of formerly luxury brands.

He is a star at it,has made his fortune from it. Shaft the supplier, buy them, use his stores to mass-market.

I bought a pair of YSL jeans in his store about ten years ago.

I kid you not. Yves St Laurent. In Sports Direct.

    Still got them too.

  17. Fish to make an appearance at Mordor tonight?

When did they sign him from Marillion, and for how many squid?

Is this them flexing their financial mussels? Or is easdale just a bigmouth bass, talking carp?

They’re surely skate-ing on thin ice.

If Fish plays tonight, I can see him getting hooked at half-time.

Nah, he’ll be on for the full 90 minnows

  20. Let’s get GMS in now. Best for all parties if we do.

I feel our strategy of bringing in potential foreign stars of the future has ran its course.

Am now fed up with guys wanting to move on to a ‘big club’ like Arsenal, as Virgil will do either this window or next.

I’d like to get back to having most of our players wanting to stay at Celtic for a long time, with the odd departure to help finances. That probably mean having a strong Scottish base and I feel that there has been decent improvement in the Scottish players over the past few years.

  21. twentyfirstofmaynineteenseventynine on

Got a feeling huns will put the boot in tonight, hope Hearts dont take the bait

  22. The problem with a lot of Scottish players playing for us and Scotland is that they get their heads turned by journeyman Scottish footballers playing in England’s lower divisions for 5 times what were paying them. (approx)

Bummer, that. Childhood diseases as an adult.

    Sair yin.

One of our loved contributors told me the other day that his grandson, the wee man,had the pox.

    I suggested making a game of it,with crayons,make a pretty picture,win a major prize.

He’s not spoken to me since.

I got it at 18,not great then either.

    Got served a lot quicker,mind.

  24. Jungle Jim Hot Smoked on

I have noticed of late on CQN that a growing number of posters are commenting on talented Scottish players and on teams in our League playing attractive football. Personally, I find it reassuring that the MSSM line is being followed by fewer and fewer Celtic supporters .

I know supporters have the right to be critical but one of the reasons Paul set up this site was to combat the constant negativity of the MSSM on matters Celtic. That, I guess, is why his articles are nearly always positive. Good to see that more and more seem to be agreeing that positivity is good for our Club and if any negativity is required, then we can rely on the MSSM and pub conversation to provide it.

So Fish I now get. What about the tennis allusions?

  25. Very pleased with the signing of Gary Mackay Steven. Has been accused of inconsistency at times but what cant be denied is the technique and ability he has in his locker and at 24 years old the best has yet to come. Over his career with United and Airdrie he’s averaged a goal every 4 games and an assist every 3 games – i’d expect these stats to improve in a Celtic shirt.

Here’s hoping this is the beginning of Celtic’s new transfer market strategy which will see us sign from within and end the saga of signings like Pukki, Balde, Bangura, Boerrigter at the expense of missing out on young home-grown talent at a fraction of the cost.

Now let’s go and get Armstrong.

    Hail Hail
