Delighted we have made the pre-contract signing of Gary Mackay-Steven. Gary signed for Dundee United from Airdrie in 2011 as a 20-year-old and soon became a popular figure for United fans. He has been one of several members of Jackie McNamara’s squad who has attracted attention this season and will be a loss to the former Celtic defender.
It’s all about the system
Gary is left-footed but can play on either side of the 3-behind-the-striker Ronny Deila likes to deploy. He is industrious and has a bag of tricks that makes for a good highlights video on YouTube.
I watched him turn it on against Dundee on New Years’ Day, and fondly recall a virtuoso Scottish Cup performance at Ibrox, but I’m always reluctant to offer a recommendation on a player we’ve only seen against Celtic, or in the odd TV game. The most encouraging part of this deal is that Celtic will have watched the player literally dozens of times – we want to get our first choice players, and we don’t want to be dependent on the recommendation of a foreign-based acquaintance.
United may consider cashing-in on the player this month, but I’m sure it won’t be for the £80k Sheffield United offered earlier this week.
This will be a timely boost ahead of tomorrow’s important game against Hamilton Accies, who I’ve watched a fair bit of this season. They are a far better team than we thought they were went they left Celtic Park with a win in October, while their pitch provides a different challenge.
It’s as game I expect us to win but I’ll be happy when the result is in the bag.
Many thanks to everyone who booked tickets for the CQN11 St Patrick’s Night on Friday 13 March at the Kerrydale suite. You can book at the bottom of this page, or email me if you’d like to hold a ticket, celticquicknews@gmail.com .
The event has been live for less than 24 hours and we are already well on the way to funding the school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals.

Cheers.
I think he’ll be a star with us.
Love to see him in right away.

I’m a big Ronny supporter as most of you will have realised.
I’d also be the first to admit that things have not gone as I would have hoped. There have been a number of causes, injuries, volume of matches and the incredible form of a resurgent Aberdeen being the main ones.
I’m now pretty nervous about the league. I don’t get the attitude among our fans who claim that Ronny should be miles ahead of Aberdeen… 8 straight wins without losing a goal is tremendous form and no matter what we do we can only get a maximum of 3 points per game.
The Sevco game – its a one off. The better team do not always win these games. I’m confident but to say that it is a pressure match is the understatement of the century. A rash challenge, raised arm or referee mistake and we could be a man down. A mistake, deflection or speculative shot and we could be a goal down. Ronny’s career with us rests on such vagaries. He wouldn’t survive a defeat.
As such, Ronny MUST push for GMS now. For there is a chance he won’t be here in the summer if things don’t go our way.
Some of our fans had decided he was a dud as soon as they heard he was coming from Stromsgodset. Some decided when he lost to Legia. A lot of these guys are waiting for a ‘told you so’ moment.

Sounds like he did a good job.. for us.
Never knew he was scout for them.
Must have been a good contract on offer.
Hopefully GMS turns into a great signing, I think he has what it takes.
Just watched the Delia pre match press conference and he always makes sense when he talks. He seems very hungry for success and always wants more from his players.
He is adamant that Commons and big VVD are going nowhere this month. Go on Ronny.

So let me get this right.
We are celebrating having signed a player who won’t kick a ball in earnest for us until at minimum July as it stands.
Wooooooppppppeeeeeeee!
There is —-skin than —-sight at Celtic Park right now.

We can’t be too worried about the League if we aren’t paying up front to get him now for the second half of the campaign.

I don’t worry about beating the Hamilton team tomorrow, it’s that pitch we need to beat….worst in Scotland.

When did he work for our old foe ?

Yes indeed
Celtic “legend KING KENNY” took the Minty shilling during some of our darkest hours on the 1990s to be “a Rangers ambassador” to assist in the signing of Ronaldo and Batistuta and the like.
Funny enough he doesn’t refer to it in his otherwise extremely lengthy and detailed Wikipedia entry.

GMS only signed for us because he wanted a transfer window named after him.
Apparently he spoke to Willo Flood about it and there was no stopping him.

The long wait is over
As of last night they were still in discussions.
I will note that GMS is very rarely excited, signing for Liverpool almost raised a smile. He spoke with our manager last night and had to be scraped off the ceiling!!
