Today, the homeless gather at Celtic Park

203

131 years ago today, in the hall of St Mary’s in the Calton area of Glasgow, Bro. Walfrid convened a meeting that concluded with the note: “A football club will be formed for the maintenance of dinner tables for the children and unemployed.”

While practically every other football club in the world formed because men wanted to play football, Celtic were formed to feed the poor.  We have a remarkable heritage.  This, more than European Cups or double trebles, is the greatest part of our history.

This afternoon, Glasgow’s homeless will descend on Celtic Park where your Foundation will provide a hot meal.  Winter brings acute problems for our homeless, each year, many do not survive the season.  But this time also marks the start of the most intense period of activiey for the Foundation.

The poor and underprivileged, the homeless and forgotten, across Scotland, the rest of the UK, Ireland and beyond are given whatever is possible.  All of this depends on the work of Celtic supporters and others, who see the work of the Foundation and commit to helping.

We are all busy getting on with our lives, but the Foundation makes it easy for us to be responsible for someone’s hot meal.  It makes it possible for us to bear witness as Celtic fans, not just for the goals and the glory, but for the reasons, which are today 131 years old.  What a great thing to be part of.

You can join today’s Founding Fathers’ Fast.  You don’t need to stop eating all day, just eat less than normal, and donate £5 to the Foundation here.  It is the most enjoyable money you will spend all week.

Or you can donate by texting ‘CELT07’ followed by ‘£5’ to 70070.

Thank you.

8 of the 12 SPFL Premiership clubs are profitable after tax, though only Celtic made a sizeable profit of £15.4m (Hearts were next highest at £2.3m). 4 clubs lost money, but #RangersFC £14.3m loss was by far the highest (others: Aberdeen £1.2m, Dundee £0.4m & Motherwell £0.1m).

  5. Happy Celtic Birthday to all. Great article Paul, It is moments like this that we really remember where we came from and what we are about. Abuse, derision and racism will never destroy us. We have come too far along that road to be dismissed. But more importantly, we have never lost an opportunity to reach out to thousands in our wee close minded country and in lands far away when we were asked to be mindful of those in greater need than ourselves.

This site has reached out to many, including myself in time of illness. May I ask you today to keep in your thought, and if you do so, your prayers, one of my young cousins in Dublin. He has just had a reoccurrence of Lymphoma and has had his first session of Chemo. Some of our Irish supporters may know his voice…he does the main announcements at Croke Park. Thanks in advance.

A timely reminder to those who can only feel superior by tarnishing the good Celtic stand for.

We are all part of humanity. We get it wrong. We get it right next time.

Gerry Rafferty never sang a truer word but Celtic get it right best when they remember who we are and where we come from.

  11. That UEFA. Wit ur they like? Here is a very clear explanation of how Man City, PSG circumvented FFP with UEFA’s help to get a UEFA licence.

    https://t.co/6Tqo6DIPE4

Now did that sort of thing happen in 2011 when enhanced UEFA FFP was introduced from Oct 2010?

    Just asking like. ;)

  12. As someone who is directly descended on both sides of my family from those for whom Celtic was founded, I can only thank God for Br Walfrid and his concern for those in need. May we always stay true to his vision.

A wee prayer offered up for those who share that vision and, especially for those in need of a prayer.

  14. Further to my previous on UEFA Man City and PSG.

The seriousness of the revelations re UEFA and Man City and PSG call into doubt the very reason for UEFA’s existence in terms of fair governance.

Res12 was based on the idea that if a club were in breach of UEFA FFP then UEFA would investigate and take restorative action.

That belief is now shown to be false and football not only operates outside civil law it operates outside its own football laws.

This is what footballing authorities do not want to admit, that fairness depends on who you are, who you know and how deep is their wealth well to drink from.

There was a conversation between UEFA and SFA in September 2011 where a licensing submission from RFC under the UEFA monitoring Article 66 was verbally accepted by UEFA.

That period is one that the SFA JPDT were supposedly to investigate after the Compliance Officer took 7 months to identify where a possible breach of UEFA FPP may have occured in 2011.

So what took place during that discussion between SFA and UEFA that made the submission acceptable then but has not stood the test of time since?

Recent events suggest upholding their rules when the integrity rubber hits the commercial road is not exactly at top of UEFA’s Fair Play list and the sooner they and the PSGs/ Man Cities bugger off and form the Harlem Globetrotter Football Entertainment League the better.
