Today, the homeless gather at Celtic Park

203

131 years ago today, in the hall of St Mary’s in the Calton area of Glasgow, Bro. Walfrid convened a meeting that concluded with the note: “A football club will be formed for the maintenance of dinner tables for the children and unemployed.”

While practically every other football club in the world formed because men wanted to play football, Celtic were formed to feed the poor.  We have a remarkable heritage.  This, more than European Cups or double trebles, is the greatest part of our history.

This afternoon, Glasgow’s homeless will descend on Celtic Park where your Foundation will provide a hot meal.  Winter brings acute problems for our homeless, each year, many do not survive the season.  But this time also marks the start of the most intense period of activiey for the Foundation.

The poor and underprivileged, the homeless and forgotten, across Scotland, the rest of the UK, Ireland and beyond are given whatever is possible.  All of this depends on the work of Celtic supporters and others, who see the work of the Foundation and commit to helping.

We are all busy getting on with our lives, but the Foundation makes it easy for us to be responsible for someone’s hot meal.  It makes it possible for us to bear witness as Celtic fans, not just for the goals and the glory, but for the reasons, which are today 131 years old.  What a great thing to be part of.

You can join today’s Founding Fathers’ Fast.  You don’t need to stop eating all day, just eat less than normal, and donate £5 to the Foundation here.  It is the most enjoyable money you will spend all week.

Or you can donate by texting ‘CELT07’ followed by ‘£5’ to 70070.

Thank you.

That was an informative documentary on BBC2 there.

It was about the involvement of Scotland in the slave trade.

Embarrassing to watch, Scotlands shame indeed.

  4. People of a certain age will remember a popular programme ‘Wagon Train’. It was a caravan. USA was built on immigration. The perception is that they are spongers and criminals. The truth is most want to settle down, work, pay their dues and see their children thrive. It is the same here in Britain.

    Auldheid,

And if there is no response from the SFA prior to the Celtic AGM, what then? More obfuscation and deflection? Surely the time has come for a timescale to be laid down and, failing satisfactory response from the SFA, then legal action can only follow.

I doubt that obfuscation approach would now be acceptable.

What Res12 requested has now been revealed, so waiting for an investigation that is no longer required simply does not stand scrutiny.

A timescale to resolve the issue is essential if football as a regulated sport is to survive.

Unless of course we, as supporters of all clubs, accept it is now another form of entertainment.

The Irish were divided before the Plantation- that is just the latest manifestation of tribalism. Where did the 4 provinces come from? Were they united? Neither when they were largely Catholic or when they were largely heathen was there an absence of tribalism.

Invaders, including 800 years under English domination, may have fostered rivalries and introduced religious sectarianism, but there was dissension and warfare before the plantation and there will be again.

There was dissension and warfare on the lands of North America before European invaders took control late on in its history. In the USA, there have been Nativist resentment of Irish immigration, Italian immigration and Catholic German immigration. There has been resentment, bigotry and oppression applied to Eastern European Jews, to freed African slaves and to impoverished South Americans, especially Mexicans who are re-entering territories they claimed (in Texas and California and New Mexico) before the USA drove them out or bought them out.

” We are as you all know in a new and dangerous part of the world’s history. The tragic events of the 11th of September have changed our lives, they have caused us to take pause and think about the values we hold in common with the American people and free people around the world. That was an attack on Australia as much as it was an attack on the United States. It not only claimed the lives of Australians but it assaulted the very values that we hold dear and that we take for granted. So therefore a military response and wise diplomacy and a steady hand on the helm are needed to guide Australia through those very difficult circumstances. National Security is therefore about a proper response to terrorism. It’s also about having a far sighted, strong, well thought out defence policy. It is also about having an uncompromising view about the fundamental right of this country to protect its borders. It’s about this nation saying to the world we are a generous open hearted people, taking more refugees on a per capita basis than any nation except Canada, we have a proud record of welcoming people from 140 different nations. But we will decide who comes to this country and the circumstances in which they come. ”

  18. STFTB, You paint a picture of humanity which is hard to argue with. It is despairing. But there is another side. We are also loving and kind and caring. I am sure you know that and partake in it. Most of the sins of humanity are driven by the rich and powerful. “It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”.

“On the other hand , Scotland gave much assistance to the South in the American civil war.”

It is amazing how little support there was for the Confederacy amongst the peoples of Scotland and England whose jobs depended on the Cotton Trade. Some Mill owners may have campaigned for recognition of the Confederate states but the workers in their factories, who wanted the trade to resume and jobs to become secure, did little politically to aid them.

Similarly, in Shipbuilding, there were many opportunities to build blockade runners and some ships that could be later fitted for war but these were the commision of Shipbuilding owners and money men who did not mind profiting from the owners of slaves; they were not voluntary works of labour by working class Scots who backed the Confederacy. In fact most of them did not know where the ships they built were bound for because the government colluded with the owners in the fiction that they were going anywhere but the Southern states. So they certainly were not going to proclaim this to the workforces on the Clyde or Merseyside.

Yes, the Southern States professed an affinity with (Prebyterian) Scotland but there were more Scots and more Irish that fought as Union soldiers then there were for the South, because most had immigrated to the populous states where there were jobs.

Much of the South’s professed affinity for things Scottish was of the Mythical, Romanticised, Sir Walter Scott variety, and was most definately venerating Presbyterian Scotland, not that Romanish lot. Just like the KKK’s mythical association with the Clans, it is Tartan kitsch of the worst kind.

    Thank you .

I do, however, have hope, and it is needed to avoid sinking into despair.

My message was not that we have always been warring with one another and always will be.

I was trying to say that the latest manufactured immigration scare or red scare is nothing new and nothing we cannot cope with provided we react with cooler heads and don’t go around whipping up hatred and empowering weekend warriors to administer their own form of justice in response to whistles being blown.

There are so many lies told about immigration and many of them are deliberately told to foster fear and chaos, to get people to look down on the poor and the desperate, and not turn their focus back on the guys who are dipping our pockets to keep themselves safe and secure.

We cannot have completely open borders. Nor can we have no immigration/emigration/refugee movement at all. We need to find a more humane line to manage the process.

At the moment, the nasties (some pun intended) have been in ascendancy for a while. Populist movements who point out groups that can be identified as “The Other” are being successful; they always are at times of austerity. Whether they are out and out Fascists like Mussolini, Franco and Adolf, or totalitarians of the Left or Modern day Populists of the Right who want to preserve their advantages from competition, they will always find a ready audience.

But where are Mussolini, Franco and Adolf now? Where are Stalin and Caucescu? Guys like Orban and Putin and Trump are mean-spirited nasties but they are mere shadows of their predecessors.

Just like we were able to defeat their more threatening precedents, we will overcome their pale-shadow successors.

And that job will start to happen in the USA tonight.

There are too many good minded folk in that land to let the bassas keep cheating and winning. And thy cannot find ways to disenfranchise them all.

    So, I do have hope.

The insult was made towards the quality of your argument. With the advantages you have had you should be able to and have been able to do better in the past. But, if you want to take it as a personal insult rather than towards the argument- Be my Guest- if it makes you feel better.

“I was referring to the geographical division of Ireland .

    Was that not obvious ?”

Not without the actual use of the word “geographical” in the original (as opposed to the revised) argument- No it was not.

You claimed that Ireland became divided because of the Plantation but it did not do so, even in your revised attempt at a thesis.

Ireland was unified at the time of the plantation. It was a unified dominion of the English crown. No part of Ireland was taken away from English dominion by the Plantation and no part was added to it. The plantations were a lengthy process and as a mass movement , started in the mid16th century and barely included any part of Ulster.

The Ulster Plantations started in the 17th century under a Scottish king of England. They were accompanied by increasing disenfranchisement of the Catholic Irish, even the landowning ones, as increasing punishment for perceived rebel tendencies. Cromwell took that to its ultimate form of repression- ethnic cleansing.

During all this period the Island remained a unified polity. All that changed was the nature of the ruling forces from a lukewarm Catholic nobility seeeking to not rock the boat to a fully fledged Protestant ascendancy – a minority rule of all Ireland. Ireland even became a fully fledged part of the UK in 1800 (though it had been formally annexed in 1542) and its flag was added to the Union flag then (even though Wales never did get the Dragon added).

Of course, the succesive Plantations had a profound effect on the emergence of the Irish state (yet to be completed) and it resulted in division and bloodshed. But that was not your original point which was that migration causes divison and, therefore needs to be opposed. I pointed out there was division before the Plantations though those divisions had other factors involved (province vs Province, tribe vs tribe, or natives versus Vikings). Those divisions were surmounted over time just as current ones can be. There were over 300 years between Plantations and the emergence of the Irish state. The mass immigration to Ireland had long stopped before the violence re-errupted. It was civic and ethnic tension and not a protest at Scottish foreigners that led to conflict in the 18th and 19th centuries.

And, as for your final points. migration , even Westward enigration in the USA, was largely pioneered by single males seeking to mine or hunt their way to a fortune. Only later did families follow in bulk. Mexico has a large immigrant population from other South and Central American states but it is not as rich and offers fewer opportunites than the USA does.

And as for it being Trump’s economy…. if you genuinely valued even-handed analysis, as you say, you might care to acknowledge that the economy was set to improve under Obama’s watch. It was regularly trailed and predicted that whoever won the last election would be left with a better starting point than Bush left Obama- all sober ommentators said so. That’s why Putin was so keen to see his blackmailable “pal” Trump get charge of these riches and make them easier to disappear in the general direction of their respective thug chunms.

It may not suit the narrative that “It was Trump wot done it” but its true nonetheless and on record. Trump added stimulus through tax cuts but we’ve seen this movie before under Ronnie and both Bushes. When the revenue from “trickle down” does not reach the promised heights, and it never does, then the gap has to be filled by more revenue gathering measures to try and claw back some of the benefits of civilisation (health and education) from the rich who want to keep more of it to themselves.

The alternative is that the USA reduces its safety blanket even further till its educational standards and spending are lower than Texas, West Virginia, Mississippi and Arkansas and infant mortality is higher than Mississippi and Alabama.

I’m off to my bed now.
