Tonev and racism in Scottish football

1193

I’m not about to give you a character reference for Aleksandar Tonev, he may be prone to racist outburst, for all I know.  Society, and therefore football, still has a racism problem, just read how coolly Luis Suarez played addressing an opponent as “negro”.  The game has to react firmly when presented with racist banners, which regularly appear in Eastern Europe.

On the balance of probabilities, would a born-and-bred Scottish international be judged to have made a racist remark during a game against an opponent he doesn’t share a common tongue with?

If Kenny Miller was similarly accused and claimed to be misquoted, how would you feel?  Scottish footballers just don’t have a history of this kind of remark; I’d be inclined to believe Miller.  So, I expect, would Scottish football.

Tonev comes from one of those Eastern European countries.  Scottish football acknowledged it had no evidence to act on but found him guilty.

Based in just as little evidence, could you please decide if Scottish football is guilty of racist generalisation in its handling of this matter?  I know you don’t have enough evidence to come to a proper decision, but that’s the point.

Maybe if Aleks was at Ibrox on Tuesday making flute band gestures to TV cameras at halftime, the like of which Scottish Government minster Roseanna Cunningham once insisted was unacceptable and illegal, we’d all realise he didn’t mean any harm.  Or was it just the Sign of the Cross, Ms Cunningham?

But Tonev’s not “one of us”, so who cares?

The auction for two debenture hospitality seats, which started our bid to build a fourth school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals ended a few minutes ago.  Thanks to everyone who bid, the winner paid £295, a fantastic gesture.  Thanks also to Celtic sponsor, Magners, for pulling things together for us and making it happen.

We have a couple of slightly less-illustrious premium seats for tomorrow in the Jock Stein stand from Magners, which you can win by answering the following question:

Which team do Celtic play tomorrow?

This competition is only open for an hour, closes at 2:0, so those who enter have an excellent chance.  Keep an eye on your inbox this afteroon.  If you’d like to donate £1 to the kitchen fund in tandem with your entry, you can do so here.

Terms and Conditions apply.

You can get copies of Caesar & the Assassin, Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s accounts of managing Celtic from Jock Stein’s departure until the appointment of Liam Brady, signed by both Billy and Davie here.

It’s a great read, you’ll enjoy it.

  3. I think that because Tonev is making the appeal it also leaves open the possibility if they do convict him on the grounds of probability that he will appeal to the Courts of Law.

If Celtic were making the appeal I think that recourse is not open to them.

Whether anybody believes that Tonev would get a fair hearing in the Law Courts or not is anybody’s guess

The possibility exists that neither of them are lying.

If Tonev said one thing and Logan heard it as something else it doesn’t make him a liar. That’s what he heard. He’s mistaken, not lying.

The blunt answer to your question is Tonev but you cannot convict someone on the basis that they might have had a motive to lie.

If someone is accused of murder but was in fact in bed with another person’s spouse at the time of the murder — they might have a reason to lie about their whereabouts.

But that is not evidence of their involvement in the crime.

Having the motive to lie is even less damning.

I honestly know what you are saying but there has to be a standard of proof below which it is not safe to convict anyone of anything.

I heard that the ban was based on the balance of probability. I believe this is used in HR at places of work and also in law.

    Can you confirm?

Apologies if you are unaware but given your knowledge of the law is better than mine I thought I would ask.

The decision of those pronouncing judgement is and will remain flawed as long as the process remains behind closed doors.

All we know is one accused the other and he has been backed on circumstantial evidence.

Those are the facts we have been presented with to date.

Why not make the facts and resultant decision transparent? This probably one of the most heinous slurs a young man could endure and carry with him forever.

The entire affair has been dealt with in a slapstick manner, without the judge and jury facing any recourse for their decision.

  18. Anyone know if those going to the PTFC game will be pretty much guaranteed for the semi?

I mean season ticket holders of course. If not I believe this is a major reason people are not renewing year on year.

The Bhoys who go to these games should be guaranteed in my opinion.

In the near recent past its been almost guaranteed that the guys on the home cup ticket scheme will get one.

  22. I was on a jury in the high court eighteen years ago, I won’t go into the case…but members of that jury had judged the bloke by his appearance and the expense the experts cost for the defence.

He was found guilty by a majority.

The bloke got a year added on to his sentence, making it nine years…he served the whole nine years and took his case to the European courts, I’ve never found out how he got on with that.

Oh, incidentally on the judges rounding up…it was the blokes family that skint themselves to pay for the experts.

I often wondered how the guilty voters felt on hearing that…I’ve been brought up and have taught my kids never to judge a book by its cover.

  27. jc2

  28. Its a pity our board wont challenge the masonic, sectarian influence in the SFA, Apparently, you can say anything you like about a Celtic player, because the Celtic board wont challenge it…..The huns are fully aware of that fact.

I don’t know if Tonev is racist, but to be accused of racism by blazer wearing sectarian bigots, really takes the biscuit.

I’d be extremely surprised if he’s on HCT scheme and went on Wednesday night if he didn’t get one for the semi.
