Tonev and racism in Scottish football

1193

I’m not about to give you a character reference for Aleksandar Tonev, he may be prone to racist outburst, for all I know.  Society, and therefore football, still has a racism problem, just read how coolly Luis Suarez played addressing an opponent as “negro”.  The game has to react firmly when presented with racist banners, which regularly appear in Eastern Europe.

On the balance of probabilities, would a born-and-bred Scottish international be judged to have made a racist remark during a game against an opponent he doesn’t share a common tongue with?

If Kenny Miller was similarly accused and claimed to be misquoted, how would you feel?  Scottish footballers just don’t have a history of this kind of remark; I’d be inclined to believe Miller.  So, I expect, would Scottish football.

Tonev comes from one of those Eastern European countries.  Scottish football acknowledged it had no evidence to act on but found him guilty.

Based in just as little evidence, could you please decide if Scottish football is guilty of racist generalisation in its handling of this matter?  I know you don’t have enough evidence to come to a proper decision, but that’s the point.

Maybe if Aleks was at Ibrox on Tuesday making flute band gestures to TV cameras at halftime, the like of which Scottish Government minster Roseanna Cunningham once insisted was unacceptable and illegal, we’d all realise he didn’t mean any harm.  Or was it just the Sign of the Cross, Ms Cunningham?

But Tonev’s not “one of us”, so who cares?

The auction for two debenture hospitality seats, which started our bid to build a fourth school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals ended a few minutes ago.  Thanks to everyone who bid, the winner paid £295, a fantastic gesture.  Thanks also to Celtic sponsor, Magners, for pulling things together for us and making it happen.

We have a couple of slightly less-illustrious premium seats for tomorrow in the Jock Stein stand from Magners, which you can win by answering the following question:

Which team do Celtic play tomorrow?

This competition is only open for an hour, closes at 2:0, so those who enter have an excellent chance.  Keep an eye on your inbox this afteroon.  If you’d like to donate £1 to the kitchen fund in tandem with your entry, you can do so here.

Terms and Conditions apply.

You can get copies of Caesar & the Assassin, Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s accounts of managing Celtic from Jock Stein’s departure until the appointment of Liam Brady, signed by both Billy and Davie here.

It’s a great read, you’ll enjoy it.

  1. Good evening friends

Mrs Baldie and me doing the ole bah humbug approach to Hallowe’en and escaping shortly for a meal in deepest darkest Ayrshire. Well, Kilmarnock actually.

Decided to go for the ole Movember thing so hope to post a link to my page later on or perhaps tomorrow. Just shaved my top lip for the last time for a month (hopefully).

Really looking forward to tomorrow’s game and hope to get to CQN Corner around 2.30.

  2. I would have though that given the seriousness of the allegation against Tonev that the standard of proof should have been far higher to the point where the evidence should be beyond all reasonable doubt. Did he have legal representation? Did he have an interpreter since English is not his first language ? If he had to explain himself he would have grounds for appeal imo.

Some good points on here today- the best pointing out that Tonev has been found guilty of racism by an organisation fronted by a man who built his career on maintaining sectarianism in Scotland

  9. Well two recent sfa decisions are interesting .

Boyd getting off with a “not proven ” verdict when he was clearly guilty for all to see on tv.

And Boerrigter getting done for simulation when that should have been a “not proven”

He was fouled in the box with the referee having a good view but his fall was slightly delayed.

The conclusion I make is that the sfa are biased and not fit for purpose .

  10. No matter the outcome of AT’s appeal, job done by that moronic mob, the SFA. Our name has ben tarnished.

Remember the foodbanks tomorrow those going to the game. Shameful that these exist but not the fault of those who need them.

  11. Tim Malone Will Tell on

Didn’t the SFA use the ole “not proven” when considering Boyd sticking the nut on a Hibs player? Surely that would have been the common sense verdict in Tonevs case.

If Tonevs is adamant of his innocence, if I were him I would be tempted to “go legal” with this and damn the consequences. Or is it only teams from Govan that are allowed to take the SFA to court?

I was on a jury in the high court eighteen years ago, I won’t go into the case…but members of that jury had judged the bloke by his appearance and the expense the experts cost for the defence.

He was found guilty by a majority.

The bloke got a year added on to his sentence, making it nine years…he served the whole nine years and took his case to the European courts, I’ve never found out how he got on with that.

Oh, incidentally on the judges rounding up…it was the blokes family that skint themselves to pay for the experts.

I often wondered how the guilty voters felt on hearing that…I’ve been brought up and have taught my kids never to judge a book by its cover.

Some on here should take note. HH

The presence of TV cameras has made the’not proven’ verdict easier to deliver , e.g hillbilly who lamped N.Lennon in clear view of millions.

    Lass Diarra?

Might be the very lad for us.

I’d be happy seeing our defence protected by a man who has learned his stuff from Claude Makelele and has played 80-odd times for Real.

Getting in men of his calibre might also just swing it in terms of John G and VVD choosing to stay… which in turn would attract a better quality in future signings … building a positive momentum… and re-introducing Tim bums to Tim seats…

lets say NFL breaks his silence on what sleekit whispered in his ear and publicly states that he was called a Fenian C**t

    Question 1:

Would the SFA charge Fat Sally and subsquently ban him for 7 games without a shred of evidence but purely on the word of NFL

    Question 2:

Would Police Scotland ask both NFL and Celtic if they wanted the matter investigated.?

i think we all know the answer to both these questions

I don’t quite agree with Paul’s analysis on the Tonev thing.

    Heres my take.

I agree there was no evidence to convict when you are faced with a one wod against the other situation.

So we are dealing with probabilities.

Is it more likely Tonev given his cultural background outlined by Paul made a racist remark than Shay Logan fabricated an accusation against an opponent?

I think the answer to this question has led to the 7 match ban. A brave decision but one that sends a message I agree with.

For me – Id be happy if the player was returned to Villa.

    XxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxX

A reasonable post mate and I take your point.

However if I was Alexander Tonev and knowing I was not guilty I don’t think I would be that reasonable.

As far as I can see the man has been branded a racist without a shred of evidence and if I was him I’d take them for every penny they had in a court of law .

The ultimate irony is the SFA have condoned racism for more than a century
