Tonev arrives after a season long chase

795

A year after trying and failing to sign him from Lech Poznan, Celtic have secured the services of Aleksandar Tonev from Aston Villa.  Tonev has blistering pace, a right footer who is usually used on the left, he is an archetypal counter-attacking player.

The player’s profile blossomed during the first six months of 2013, in particular after he scored a hat-trick for Bulgaria against Malta, which brought Villa and Celtic to the table.  The step-up to the English Premier League from playing a speciality role for Poznan was, not surprisingly, too much.

Aleksandar plays the same position as Georgios Samaras, albeit he’s a completely different type of player, but we will look to him to do the same job – be an out ball away from home in Europe.

Ronny will have seen him only from DVDs, so he’ll be keen to get him onto the pitch tomorrow morning for a run-out ahead of St Johnstone.  Let’s hope the manager likes what he sees….  It’s a worry. The most promising part of deal is that Aleksandar has a point to prove, I’d rather hungry players with a point to prove than those who’ve too much on the clock.

Welcome to Celtic, Aleks.

Any manager who hasn’t full control of signings is under intense pressure.

We were after Tonev two years ago.

Are we seriously supposed to believe he is a Deila target?.

    Or just a strange coincidence?

    Good luck to the fella.

He is a Celt now and I wish the lad well.

  2. Out of curiosity, what’s the point of investing in a scouting network if our manager isn’t supposed to take advantage of it?

  3. Vincent Kompany was once a 17 year old unknown Belgian defender who played in an Anderlecht team that turned us over in Europe.

Just saying as opposed to just supposing CSC

  4. Here’s a thought, does anyone think Ronny would have been scouting in the EPL for his team on Norway and that his list of targets would remain the same when he got to Celtic?

Claims on twitter that the Man City lad we`re after is Jason Denayer, a centre half who turned 19 six weeks ago – so clearly ready to come in and make an immediate impact!

  6. Eddieinkirkmichael….

Me too, I hope Tonev rams my current opinion of him right down my throat…..

Watched him play a couple of times for Villa last season and not hopeful that he will though.

It wasn’t so much a lack of confidence as lack of any type of footballing brain.

Massively over hit passes, unable to go past a man, and wild inaccurate shots from any distance.

Has a bit of pace but that’s about it.

  7. RD said last week he wasn’t interested in loan signings, but then again he has no input .

Absolutely right. And although we may have an option to buy at the end of the loan the player isn`t obliged to sign for us. He`s in the shop window for a year and will go where he wants to at the end of it depending on what offers he has.

Not exactly in line with the much vaunted “long term strategy”.

  10. Just out of interest, how long does any representative of Celtic last.

Once the fans start to chant…GTF.

The warning signs are there, the PLC should pay attention.

Actually, that would be the same strategy that we’ve had since MON left, when Armageddon was just a big word on computer games.

An hour from the deadline for transfers in a multi million pound game and Lawwell and co sit and dither as usual.

Millions in the coffers,a reprieve in Europe and still nothing of note doing.

    And we laugh at Sevco.

  14. Bada Bing!!

He actually said he didn’t see the point in loan signings if there was no option to purchase.

He didn’t like the idea of developing players and sending them back.

Both our loans signing have us on first option.

    RWE-

Vincent Kompany was a 17 year old boy, rabbit caught in the headlights, when we went 3-0 up on Anderlecht after 20 minutes in the CL at Celtic Park.

The CL is no place for a teenager to earn their trade, especially a defender, by all means ease them into dead rubber group games but not a qualifier with £20 million riding on it. That is the stuff of lunacy.

Wednesday’s game against St. J will give us a much better idea of where we are. We have a fair idea of how we should do against them whereas we didn’t really know what to expect from Legia.

If we turn out to be as gutless and clueless against our fellow SPFLr’s as we were against Legia then we can start manning the lifeboats.

  17. Still think Kenwyn Jones could do a job at Celtic.

    Great target man.

Think he would be a great signing for a couple of seasons.

No sell on value so probably won’t happen.

A portable toilet(contents eventually released onto the field/river) floating on rainwater, my phone being soaked… My discovery of a new personal desire to install some Communism to confront my rampant capitalist boss and my saying adios to some good amigos who all joined me in walking out.

Oh my Gogol book soaked and hyperthermia a possibility.

Just how many changes to the lineup including brand new players should we be making for the maribor away game ?

(not the same question as how many players should we be getting in for the new season)

Billy Sharp again? Was that not last year’s chat, as was Tonev (who I hope turns out well)?

Sorry to join the ranks of the mildly disgruntled – and believe me, that is not my usual place – but wtf is happening here??????

Where is the scouting / forward planning / player acquisition strategy / squad development?

I felt that, two years or so ago, we had a squad that was developing well. Good penalty-box goal scorer, very strong midfield, excellent shot-stopper – what the hell has happened here??? Our team is going backwards – aaaaarrrrrgggggghhhhhhhh!!!!!!

I’m not nor, ally negative, and me and Wee BGFC truly love Celtic, but this is getting quite depressing. Hard to keep convincing myself that things will be alright.

A fallacy IMO, more jam tomorrow stuff, Sevco will have less to spend in the next 3 years than the previous IMO………. or we will have a 25mil spending spree ? Can’t see it mate HH
