Tonev arrives after a season long chase

795

A year after trying and failing to sign him from Lech Poznan, Celtic have secured the services of Aleksandar Tonev from Aston Villa.  Tonev has blistering pace, a right footer who is usually used on the left, he is an archetypal counter-attacking player.

The player’s profile blossomed during the first six months of 2013, in particular after he scored a hat-trick for Bulgaria against Malta, which brought Villa and Celtic to the table.  The step-up to the English Premier League from playing a speciality role for Poznan was, not surprisingly, too much.

Aleksandar plays the same position as Georgios Samaras, albeit he’s a completely different type of player, but we will look to him to do the same job – be an out ball away from home in Europe.

Ronny will have seen him only from DVDs, so he’ll be keen to get him onto the pitch tomorrow morning for a run-out ahead of St Johnstone.  Let’s hope the manager likes what he sees….  It’s a worry. The most promising part of deal is that Aleksandar has a point to prove, I’d rather hungry players with a point to prove than those who’ve too much on the clock.

Welcome to Celtic, Aleks.

  1. Well no money spent.I know some will say,”We have a wild card option”,but the most important game of our season is next week. If,we had been considering buying anyone he should have been brought in today. In the squad for Saints, and given a run out,get to know the players. That boat has sailed.

Just WTF is going on?.Do we want horsed out of the CL?.The time has come for a boycott.

I was a very vocal part of “Celts for change”,although those times were very different to the new fiasco happening now. Then we had idiotic morons running the club into the ground.Today we have sharp suited, high rolling city slickers in charge, running the club into the ground. You really could not make this up.

The treatment of the fans is despicable. To go out of the CL 6-1 to an average side, get a miracle reprieve, then the next day sell your star keeper,is just a slap in the face to all of us.

Dont get me wrong,if the money from Forster had been used to strengthen the side,to help the new manager have a fighting chance of overcoming the next hurdle,I would be applauding.Paul told us the other day that the reprieve had put at least£5 million into the kitty.Add that to Forsters money, and then tell me if you think the £5 million could not have been spent on players.Put Forsters money wherever it is you put it.There is £15-20 million at stake here.Do they not want it?.

I am at a loss for words now.The more I write the crazier this situation becomes. This board are treating us the exact same way the hun board is treating them, and we laugh at them !!!!!!!!.Our club are now 3rd rate. How much lower can we let it go?.

Board are definitely ripping it out of us just now. We’ve just been handed what in my view is a poisoned chalice, do we really want to progress to the CL and be embarrassed as supporters while OUR club rakes in another 20 odd million we’ll never see spent on the team ? Dont know where we’re going now but I preferred it when we spent a few quid and had success on the park. Bring back the MON days

Should be noted that Celtic still have a “wildcard” signing they can register as the CL deadline is not for another week yet

    Any suggestions

Would be a wildcard if we actually spent some money on an actual transfer.

    The return of 2009-2011 short-headism.

The problem is that out PLC have bought into the notion that the product is rubbish and as a consequence are squirrelling away their nuts waiting for the RETURN OF THE O** F***

In actual fact the small minded and conservative management is turning people off more than the admittedly poor product

In management terms, its like turning WalMart into a cornershop.

You can defend the PLC if you like, that’s your opinion.

But I think you will find that supporters are critical of PL, with good reason.

Once your time is up, that’s life.

Businessmen in our PLC, are not interested in what we think.

But, they will take notice, when they get the GTF refrain.

Ive no time for businessmen who want to make money out of the club.

Im a Celtic supporter, I want decent players in the team.

    Is that asking too much?

Starry Plough – you have hit one nail on the head. There is absolutely nothing to suggest that Ronny D has any worthwhile experience in the international transfer market so inevitably someone else will be pulling those strings.

Let’s not forget that his “reputation” is based around developing talent and getting the best out of players – that is why he has been brought to CP.

There is real concern though that perhaps he is being expected to make silk purses out of crap – and that he also may not command loyalty of “senior players” if they think his methods will risk their future contract prospects either at CP or elsewhere.

I think we need to accept that his first season might be very moderate if we buy into a future vision of youth development – but that takes time, patience and faith – attributes in short supply in the Celtic support.

It might indeed be a short marriage – the shit is starting to hit the reality fan. It will be a big test of character for Ronny to see how he copes with the pressure of high expectation at Celtic. Worrying times…

I think it’s the absence of answers that bear scrutiny that is the problem.

One factor that would help greatly is an indicator from Celtic of the kind of player they would like to sign that they think would reduce the risk of not qualifying for the CL ( there are no guarantees in football), the cost of that player, the benefit if it works and the cost if it does not.

I was thinking that Sneddon would be such a risk reducing player and hoped we would sign him.

I also think the risk would be further reduced if we signed more than one of that quality, let’s limit it to three to allow for injuries and suspensions.

A wee cost benefit analysis of the impact of that kind of purchase would be quite enlightening if of course folk believed Celtic were providing the kind of figures they had used to try and attract that kind of player.

As it is, the absence of info only helps preserve default positions based on the absence of info. A vicious negative circle.

I do wish Celtic were more imaginative in addressing perceptions but there again they might be thinking What’s the point?

Those we do not need to convince are with us anyway and those who are not with us will not accept what we say so why waste the energy?

I know a lot of time and effort is put into this. As the article points out the association in england is against cheating. But it wasn’t Liverpool calling out Man U or Arsenal Versus Tottenham and the Association stepped in.

one side of me wanted Celtic to hold a presser everyday when the mass of the cheating was revealed and call out deadco for what they were and to lobby the SFA and capture there press and a campaign

Then I remembered there are all corrupt and they would have made it about us, potrayed us as bitter and we would have used to black mail them back into whichever league they could find, as by speaking out we would have been guilty of continuing the “OF” brand.

    I preferred the silence.

I still want them gone forever, you’ll know more about what they could of done though.

Still guided the club through potential minefields, no?
