Tonev arrives after a season long chase

795

A year after trying and failing to sign him from Lech Poznan, Celtic have secured the services of Aleksandar Tonev from Aston Villa.  Tonev has blistering pace, a right footer who is usually used on the left, he is an archetypal counter-attacking player.

The player’s profile blossomed during the first six months of 2013, in particular after he scored a hat-trick for Bulgaria against Malta, which brought Villa and Celtic to the table.  The step-up to the English Premier League from playing a speciality role for Poznan was, not surprisingly, too much.

Aleksandar plays the same position as Georgios Samaras, albeit he’s a completely different type of player, but we will look to him to do the same job – be an out ball away from home in Europe.

Ronny will have seen him only from DVDs, so he’ll be keen to get him onto the pitch tomorrow morning for a run-out ahead of St Johnstone.  Let’s hope the manager likes what he sees….  It’s a worry. The most promising part of deal is that Aleksandar has a point to prove, I’d rather hungry players with a point to prove than those who’ve too much on the clock.

Welcome to Celtic, Aleks.

what is the stars says he thinks we will lose on Wednesday but doubt that will occur. I think Ronny knows what he is doing and St Johnstone are not in the same league (literally and metaphorically) as the saints. Fully expecting a 3 or 4 victory on Wednesday and Similar at the weekend too. Then where will all the anti Ronny, anti “Johnny foreigner” brigade be?

  9. RYecatcher,

Agree. Lawwell and the SFA are desperate for Sevco to stay afloat and go up this year. Lawwells dream would be a neck and neck championship race and helicopter Sunday. CL football does not appear to be on the agenda as the team is the weakest in 3 seasons and the downsizing will continue.

martim1980. Lawwell being a Celtic supporter is irrelevant. He is a beancounter who was paid £906,000 last season excluding stock options. Since he rejoined Celtic in 2003 he has taken close to 10 mil out of the club.

At last the Celtic support is waking up to the man who is destroying the club. I confidently predict that within 2 seasons Celtic will be at their lowest ebb in 13 years of Lawwell. In the past we have had Chairman like John Reid who kept pressure on Lawwell. Now we have Ian Bankier as a pet poodle. Lawwell does what he wants now. the clock is ticking on Lawwell.

Ps. He is not the first Celtic person to fail in his role of running the club. The Whytes and Kelly’s ( who he worked for in his original spell ) did a grand job of screwing it up. Maybe he picked something up from them after all.

  19. Celtic move for Manchester City defender

    Date: 11th August 2014 at 11:17 pm

    Written by: Joe McHugh

Celtic are poised to sign Jason Denayer from Manchester City.

The hoops have been in contact with City and are also believed to be interested in Matthias Bossaerts as Ronny Delia seeks to strengthen his first team squad.

Both of the City defenders are from Belgium with Denayer likened to a young Vincent Kompany- who played against Celtic as a 17-year-old for Anderlecht.

Celtic and City have built up strong relations in recent years after playing each other in the Next Gen tournament in the 2011/12 season.

Deila is keen to strengthen his defence and moved quickly when City gave him encouragement over taking the defenders on loan.

Nineteen-year-old Denayer was in the City squad that played pre-season games against Dundee and Hearts last month and stayed with the first team for their trip to the USA.

In a recent interview on the City website he said: “I enjoyed the run-out against Dundee because I was playing alongside Dedryck Boyata, who is obviously a fellow Belgian and someone I know well. He helped me a lot as did Aleksandar Kolarov and it was enjoyable to be part of it all.

“As for the coming season, ideally I would like to train with the first-team as much as possible and maybe be involved in one or two cup games this season. If I can play more for the Belgium Under-21s as well, it will have been a very good year for me.”

Denayer initially played for Anderlecht but left it to join the Jean-Marc Guillou academy that nurtured the Toure brothers and has modeled his game on Kompany.

“It wasn’t easy to begin with but I feel I’ve settled well over the past year and everything is good now,” he said, speaking last month. “Vincent Kompany speaks to me a lot and if he sees something in training he thinks I can do better, he always lets me know – and he also lets me know if I do something well, too, which is really important. I want to learn as much as I can from him and the rest of the first-team squad.”

The deadline for signing, and registering, players for the Champions League qualifier with Maribor was at 11pm Celtic Park time tonight. One further signing can be added 48 hours before the first leg tie in Slovenia.

  20. Craig Swan: Legia Warsaw’s attempt to emotionally blackmail Celtic and UEFA is way out of line

    Aug 11, 2014 11:450 Comments

    OPINION BY CRAIGSWAN

CRAIG says that the Polish champions deserve zero sympathy for breaking the rules and then attempting to put pressure on Celtic and the European governing body.

LEGIA WARSAW had sympathy and the moral high ground. Last night they blew both of them.

The Polish champions have every right to be devastated about their dismissal from the Champions League.

    It’s way too harsh.

Rules are rules but the punishment for playing Bartosz Bereszynski for four minutes when already 6-1 up on aggregate was beyond severe. However, Dariusz Mioduski’s outbursts and open letters did more damage than good.

Were Legia right to pen a begging letter to Celtic in the wake of their UEFA punishment?

Yes, Celtic should hand them their place in the Champions League

Yes, Celtic should play them in a one-off, winner takes all friendly

No, the letter was desperate and embarrassing

No, the decision is UEFA’s alone

No, UEFA have followed the rules and made the right call

Perhaps he felt he had nothing to lose, though his attempts at emotional blackmail were way out of line.

The Legia owner accused Celtic of lacking class yet then named two gentleman who are no longer with us as part of his begging letter. Polish FA chief Zibi Boniek was even worse, admitting he called Michel Platini for a favour, then hammering Celtic, only to admit the rulebook was spot on.

Celtic are fortunate to be in the play-off for the Champions League because their football didn’t deserve it.

But they also did not deserve to endure such pap from Poland.

Celtic manager Ronny Deila is looking forward to getting his first taste of the Scottish Premiership as they start the defence of their title with a trip to Perth to take on St Johnstone on Wednesday.

The match against the Scottish Cup holders will be Deila’s first domestic match in charge of the Glasgow giants and he is desperate to start the campaign with a win as he aims to lead his side to their fourth title in a row.

It is a start of a hectic schedule for Celtic with the Hoops welcoming Dundee United to Parkhead for the unfurling of the league flag on Saturday before a trip to Slovenia to take on NK Maribor following their UEFA Champions League reprieve.

Celtic were held to a 3-3 draw and managed a narrow 1-0 win on their visits to McDiarmid Park last season and Deila knows his side will have to be at their best to pick up the three points.

“It’s going to be very exciting to get into a rhythm and work every day to get improvements,” Deila, who joined from Norwegian side Stromsgodset in the summer, said. “The team who improves most of all during the season will win the league and we have a strong squad, the best in Scotland.

“So if we keep on playing well and developing, we will have a very good chance to win it. We have the cups as well, and I know how good it is to win a cup and be in a cup final, so we have a lot to fight for this season.”

    Forster exit

Celtic will have to face St Johnstone without talismanic keeper Fraser Forster, who left the club to join English Premiership side Southampton for £10million (USD $17.5million) on Saturday.

The English keeper, who set a new Scottish record for clean sheets last season, is likely to be replaced in goal by former Hearts and Sunderland keeper Craig Gordon, who was handed a contract by Celtic in the summer following two years out of the game with an injury.

He may be joined by Aleksander Tonev with the Bulgarian winger expected to sign for the club on loan from Aston Villa.

Elsewhere, top of the table Dundee United will attempt to build on their flying start when they take on Motherwell. United handed Aberdeen a 3-0 opening day defeat while Motherwell claimed a 1-0 win against St Mirren.

The Dons, who were tipped to push Celtic in the league this season, will need to pick themselves up as they travel to Rugby Park to face Kilmarnock, Partick Thistle welcome Ross County to Firhill, Inverness Caledonian Thistle host Dundee while St Mirren and newly-promoted Hamilton clash at New St Mirren Park looking to pick up their first points of the season.

New goalkeeper Fraser Forster says that he couldn’t turn down the opportunity to join Southampton.

To be at a club like Southampton is something special, and something I’m really looking forward to being a part of”

    Fraser Forster

The 26 year-old agreed a four-year deal with Saints on Saturday evening, and linked up with his new teammates for the first time this morning.

And, speaking exclusively to youtube.com/southamptonfc, the England man explained why he chose to move to St Mary’s after a successful four years playing for Glasgow Celtic.

“I just felt it was a fantastic opportunity,” said Forster. ”Southampton is a top club and they’re playing Premier League football every season, and I thought it was an opportunity too good to miss.

“I’m just delighted to be down and to be a part of it now, and to have the move all finalised.

“I’ve had a fantastic time at Celtic and I’ve loved every minute. It’s a very special club and I’m proud to have played for them, but I felt now is the time for something new, a new challenge and to play in the Premier League.

“To be at a club like Southampton is something special, and something I’m really looking forward to being a part of.”

Forster becomes Southampton’s fifth signing of what has been a transitional summer, and the Northumberland-born stopper says he’s excited to play a part in the next chapter of the club’s history under new boss Ronald Koeman.

“It’s a moment of transition for the club, but there are so many positives,” he insisted. “There’re still so many good players here and it’s a very good club.

“The new manager is in, and to come and play for Ronald Koeman is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It’s something that you can’t turn down, because playing Premier League football is something that not many players get to do.

“A lot of clubs have these moments where they have to sell players and bring the next batch through, and I’m just delighted to be here and that the club have put their faith in me by paying the money to get me in.

“Southampton have had a tremendous few years, and you can see from the players they bring through the quality they’ve got. It’s brilliant to be a part of.
