Tonev arrives after a season long chase

795

A year after trying and failing to sign him from Lech Poznan, Celtic have secured the services of Aleksandar Tonev from Aston Villa.  Tonev has blistering pace, a right footer who is usually used on the left, he is an archetypal counter-attacking player.

The player’s profile blossomed during the first six months of 2013, in particular after he scored a hat-trick for Bulgaria against Malta, which brought Villa and Celtic to the table.  The step-up to the English Premier League from playing a speciality role for Poznan was, not surprisingly, too much.

Aleksandar plays the same position as Georgios Samaras, albeit he’s a completely different type of player, but we will look to him to do the same job – be an out ball away from home in Europe.

Ronny will have seen him only from DVDs, so he’ll be keen to get him onto the pitch tomorrow morning for a run-out ahead of St Johnstone.  Let’s hope the manager likes what he sees….  It’s a worry. The most promising part of deal is that Aleksandar has a point to prove, I’d rather hungry players with a point to prove than those who’ve too much on the clock.

Welcome to Celtic, Aleks.

  1. I was underwhelmed at Ronny’s appointment and underwhelmed at Berget’s arrival and feel equally underwhelmed at Tonev’s arrival. However they are all at Celtic now and common sense says lets give all 3 a chance. We have our first 2 domestic games this week. Can we not just wait a few days and see how these games go.

I have some reservations regarding Ronny who doesn’t want to bring in loan players already bringing in his second one after seeing him on DVD. A player Celtic have chased for a year and is now only an option for us after the EPL has proved ‘not surprisingly, too much’ for him.

Incidentally, the Cuban huns are allowing a new Catholic church to be built. The fascist lefties are making progress.

  7. Would be great if we could pay our wee hero (he loves money) Agent Craig Whyte to lead out Maribor,as their mascot, at Paradise.

I doubt it, but I would also imagine that during the talks before he took the job it would have been discussed that, over the recent past, certain players had been sounded out about the possibility of joining us, on loan or permanently, and he would be happy for the information. If he looks at some of those players and thinks he could use them then fair enough.

The suggestion from some appears to be that these players are being forced on him against his will. None of us can know this for sure, but I’d be very surprised. I’m pretty confident that Berget was RD’s choice though.

On another note. Some seem to be raging that we’ve only brought in loan signings so far. Perhaps there is a recognition within the club that recent signings haven’t worked out, and so they’ve decided to be a bit more cautious until the scouting system gets it’s act together? Also, if a guy is struggling at one club, such as Tonev, there’s every chance he’ll be bursting a gut to prove himself and get his career back on track. If it works he could of course leave, but at least we’ll have had a good year out of him. On the other hand, he could easily choose to stay as he’d feel settled into the team etc. Feeling the love of the Celtic support is difficult to walk away from. Many others will testify to that. If a guy’s getting a regular game and we’re preparing for a crack at the CL then why not? The other possibility is that he turns out to be another Balde or Pukki, but at least we aren’t stuck with him.

I just get protective of the club we support. I feel really disappointed by many of support right now, I didn’t think that would happen.

  18. martim1980- I think the main issue right now is who is bringing these guys in , RD or Park/ Lawwell? Is it a coincidence that guys signed or quoted to be after were linked in the last 18 months? Or were they on RD’s radar at Stromgodset ?

  19. Looking forward to the game on Wednesday. Hop we can find some shape and a performance to boost our confidence. H H

    Martim,

Bearing in mind we have just banked millions and lost players

Do you think this Celtic team is good enough to beat Maribor?

But romanticising a board who are fecking up big style, is not going to help.

    !!bada bing!!

We treated the 2009 – 2011 period as a a horse race where we were attempting to win by a short head to maintain interest

If you were REALLY paranoid you would almost think that, with the Huns in financial meltdown, we let them win a title to allow them access to the CL money

What makes you think that we will out the hose in the tribute act’s mouth when we literally let the original away with daylight robbery

    RETURN OF THE O** F*** !!!

    COMING SOON!!!!

  26. Raberto67

Realistic appraisal Mate, I am pretty sure Neil mentioned getting a few players in and I doubt we would scratch what every inquiries we had made without running it b the new manager and vice versa.

That being said we need a striker that knows where the goals are, wether an older head or a young up and comer who wants to make his name in front of a great support don’t really matter for me, the club is screaming out for a hero..

After last seasons cluster funk on the signing front I can see why time is being taken this year, we can’t afford any more mistakes and though the Maribor game is up I would have been surprised if we brought in a clump of new players and played them.

Meanwhile in a secret basement at Paradise the incantations and chanting continue!

    Mon the Hero!

  27. We’ve been handed an extremely fortunate second chance after being embarrassed by a half decent Legia team and what do we do about it ? Sell our best player and bring in a loan signing who has a woeful record at AV, still no Striker ! We offer virtually a zero threat from corners and high balls into the box, James Forrest is the only player that offers any kind of excitement, it’s time PL moved on and what is the point of the Billionaire Dermot Desmond ?

I’ll be there on Saturday to show my appreciation for wee Fergus but will happily boo PL & DD as they are destroying the club.

  28. Yeah, let’s feed the malcontents the BS that we will spend mega millions next year………..wake up and smell the coffee
