Treat Benfica as though they were Barca

794

After two highly productive performances against Barcelona confidence will be high, but it is worth remembering that Benfica earned a 0-0 draw at Celtic Park on Champions League match day one, and will have no fears for Tuesday.

After that game in September Celtic were favourites to finish bottom of the group.  Barca managed a slim 3-2 at home to Spartak after a late surge, placing them top of the group while the Russians were rightly encouraged.  Benfica earned a valuable away point without being greatly troubled by Celtic.  Indeed, the half time video analysis from the Uefa technicians looped repeatedly on one incident, a Benfica penalty claim.

That scenario has changed.  Celtic sit second top but a win would see Benfica match them on points and go second on the head-to-head.   Make no mistake, despite Celtic’s heroics against Barcelona, Benfica expect to be second in the group on Tuesday evening.  They are rightly favourites.

We are now tantalisingly close to the knock out stages of the Champions League but two of the most difficult games of the season lie ahead.  The best thing Celtic can do is show Benfica as much respect as they showed Barcelona.  Benfica are not quite as dangerous as the Catalans but they are more than capable of exploiting any gaps in the Celtic defence.  Treat them as Barcelona-lite and we might even collect our second win in this tournament away from home.

The Andrea Kearney Fund have a signed Celtic jersey available for auction on eBay. The fund, in memory of Andrea, assists families of women who are diagnosed with cancer while pregnant. Since Andrea died, aged 41, four years ago, over 50 families have been helped.

You can keep an eye on the auction here.

The CQN Annual will be available next week, both online and at one or two selected retail outlets. There’s a cracking image on the cover of a goal celebration from a recent goal….

Leave out any Bhoys who have travelled far or played a full 90 or anything above 60 minutes during this midweek. I couldn’t tell you who has done what.

Broonie playing more game time is important, I really hope he is feeling good again as was reported prior to the Barca game. He has been incredible this season despite his injury concerns.

All that matters at the moment is we get everyone in optimum shape for Benfica because this game is massive. Benfica are an excellent side and they will bring their very best game to the table next week, make no mistake about that. We will do extremely well to get a point but I fancy us to go one better as long as we manage our squad well. ;))

    thetimreaper,

was there no misinformation about that too, were some Isreali attacks were reported as Palistinian attacks to help with propaganda.

The west are responsible for major political hazards and I dont believe they were mistakes, I suspect its all going to plan.

I mean, look at what they done to the Kurds, a population who were the wests biggest ally in the fight against the Nazi invasion and what did they do, turned over massive amounts of Kurdish land and resources to a defeated enemy in Turkey, I mean when else in history has a country been rewarded after defeat, no mistake, simply a plan.

I think you know what is my view on the communists and their views and their propaganda.

No, I don’t think I know more about Palestine that the man who live(ed) there but there might be plenty opinions on the conflict. You can’t post one opinion, few pictures and say it’s all what you need to blame one or the other side. I think it’s poor Palestine people who pay high price while their countrymen are fighting to be top so called politics.

I’m seventh child of the poor farmers. My father worked on his small farm and has had another full time job in the firm. He never took zloty from any funds. Me, like him never took zloty from the national funds. Now I have house and place for a pony. As you can see I’m the best material for a capitalist propagandist. Is this the best I can do? No but it p***es me of when I read that everybody who do not agree with lefties views is the fascist.

As for the posts on the other night.

I read your arguments but as I said after your first statement ( you claimed that Christianity caused more victims than the fascism or Stalinism) I said that there was no room for further discussion for me. You repeated your statement in harder words later. Could not do anything but leave the topic. It’s not disrespect to you, but huge difference between my views and yours.

    Canamalar

I also said that Christianity is not the philosophy. There are Christian philosophers but Christianity is not the philosophy.

    Quote from you:

You told me Christianity was not a philosopy then refused to discuss philosophy except for some cursory mentions, your thesis was in fact exactly what I expected from a closed mind, a lot of biased modern history of little substance bar very selective references that backed up your claims, no balanced argument simply dismissal of anything that does not approximate to your opinions.

My post still stands there at 21:34. It’s long, not selective argument. It’s polite answer.

Now, I don’t care if you call me the fascist or not.

  5. Canamalar,

I have to plead ignorance on that one – you might well be right. BTW been meaning to get back to you for ages.

  6. Invercelt,

So you describe the Palestinans treatment by Israel as ‘HARSH’.

Go on .You can do better than that.

Let’s look at who thinks they are abused & imprisoned.

Well, I have already cited David Cameron, but as somebody that wouldn’t believe ANY Tory whatever he was saying, I think we would have to find more reliable witnesses.

Let’s try………….. ActionAid; Amnesty International; Broederlijk Delen; Care International; Caritas Jerusalem; Comet- ME; Danish Church Aid (DCA); Diakonia; Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI), World Council of Churches; EWASH; GVC (Gruppo di Volontariato Civile); HelpAge International; Human Rights Watch (HRW); Japan International Volunteer Center (JVC); Islamic Relief; Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation; MAP UK; medico international; Norwegian Church Aid (NCA); Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA); Oxfam; Polish Humanitarian Action (PAH); Prèmiere Urgence-Aide Médicale Internationale; SEBA; The Swedish Cooperative Centre (SCC); Terre des Hommes Italia (TdH); The Carter Center; The Overseas NGO; War Child; World Vision Jerusalem-West Bank-Gaza.

I agree but we should manage the squad well because Benfica, no matter what anyone says, is much more important than the Aberdeen game.

I have no doubts we could put out a second choice 11 and beat Aberdeen up there, if we really needed to.

I think we will win convincingly this weekend and boost our goal tally as well. I like the fact Aberdeen will sense weakness because we will make them pay on the counter attack if they open up against us.

    The Raven,

I didn’t answer my own question: I hoped that you would, but you’ve failed to do so.

Several peoples – the Irish, for 3 centuries, the Poles, for 150 years, arguably the Scots too – have not been in control of their own countries BUT there has still been a difference between those in prison & the population in general. Why don’t you recognise this difference in the case of Israel/Palestine? There are valid reasons to criticise Israel without adding things that she hasn’t done

Inver Israel has imprisoned the Gaza strip by a land , air and sea blockade , Concrete walls , watchtowers , army patrols , drones , planes flying over each day , a naval blockade which extends beyond the maritime coast are all used to make Gaza the biggest prison in the world .

Everything needed in Gaza goes in via Israel , from basic food and medical supplys to

the daily amount of electricity people can use . Water and fuel are also rationed in this way which makes for a very harsh existence for the people , Farmers fields burned out by illegal settlers while the idf stand by ,fishing boats harrassed by the navy .

By doing all of the above , normal life is very much an existance and a daily struggle .

In my llfetime , of the 3 countries you mentioned , Poland i dont know about so i cant comment .

Ireland , although things have been , i;m sure were never as bad as Gaza although i;m sure our Irish posters will correct me .

Scotland , dont make me laugh

Israel is a rogue state and should be bought to task before things in the Middle east spiral out of control and threaten all of us .

  28. Well, since Kojo is in good fighting form & ready to defend the things he has said on this site, I will ask him to explain his feelings about a young Black man & a young White woman ( or vice versa) having a loving life together.

He once said that we should not cross thoroughbreds with plough-horses.

Was this simply an example of his razor-sharp wit, or was it a fundamental conviction ?

There are other wee gems in store for when he finishes with that one.
