Udinese 1-1 Celtic

436

Udinese were pushed all the way tonight but hold on for a point that was enough to get them through to the knock out round of the Europa League at Celtic’s expense.  Gary Hooper gave Celtic the lead but Antonio Di Natale equalised in time added on at the end of the first half.

The game was only six minutes old when Georgios Samaras extended his telescopic legs and moved beyond Benatia to the edge of the Udinese box but the defender dived in front of the Greek striker to con the referee into awarding a free kick.

Udinese should have taken the lead in 12 minutes when Scott Brown was careless with a cross-field pass which was intercepted.  The Celtic defence were caught moving forward and had left Di Natale in acres of space but his lob missed the target.

Gary Hooper was the next sinner 10 minutes later.  Udinese had no answer to the probing of Samaras and James Forrest.  The former beat two players and slid an inch perfect pass inside the full back for Hooper to collect 16 yards from goal.  Unfortunately he failed to find the target with what at that time looked like being the best chance of the game.

Celtic opened the scoring on 28 minutes when Samaras rampaged down the left and sent a dangerous cross between goalkeeper and defence.  Handanovic punched the ball against his own defender and was left stranded when it rolled to an unmarked Hooper three yards from goal.  The Englishman rolled the ball over the line to put Celtic ahead.

With 45 minutes already played Samaras again rampaged down the left but possession was lost as Celtic were reluctant to pour forward seconds before half time.  Udinese moved the ball quickly up field and a fortunate break of the ball allowed them to catch the Celtic defence flat footed.  Cha was wrong side of his player who crossed for Di Natale to finish.  It was an unfortunate break for Celtic who had the better of the first half.

Udinese stepped up the pace after half time and enjoyed their best period of the game.  Fraser Forster made three saves within as many minutes just after the hour mark.  Ten minutes later a sharp passing move provided Asamoa with a gilt edged chance from 10 yards but he turned the ball against the post with Forster stranded but this signalled the end of the home team’s pressure.

Celtic came close to taking the lead again on 74 minutes when Cha DuRi stretched to volley from outside the box.  His shot struck the post with Handanovic unable to reach it.  The ball rebounded off the goalkeeper, who landed on the ground, and spun back towards goal, but Handanovic recovered in time to catch it on the line.

Greek referee, Koukoulakis, did not have a good game, mistook Cha for Scott Brown and incorrectly booked the Korean.  18 minutes later he booked Cha again but had clearly received a message from an assistant informing him of his earlier mistake, leaving Cha bemused and relieved to survive his second yellow card.

Celtic were pressing for the goal but with 10 minutes remaining a slip by Daniel Majstorovic set Di Natale clear.  Fraser Forster then had the most impressive 6 seconds of his career.  The keeper made himself a big target and saved Di Natale’s shot but he had change direction quickly as the ball broke free on the right.  A cross was swiftly dropped onto the head of the unmarked Di Natale 8 yards from goal but Forster changed direction one more time to save again.

The match finished with Celtic camped inside the Udinese box.  The ball broke to Ki inside the six yard box from a Charlie Mulgrew corner but his shot was blocked.  Fraser Forster came forward for two further corners.  From one, Daniel Majstorovic flashed a header goalward but an Udinese defender raised his arm to the ball, however, the referee failed to award a penalty.

    1) No sympathy for tax dodgers or indeed dodgy thousandaires.

Neither do I. But you are assuming that that people who ended up on the streets were unwilling to pay rather than being unable to pay. The policy which was launched in Scotland was scrapped because it did not work and was brutally unfair for households were people were in low paying jobs.

    2) The closure of mental institutions was a bad move.

    Swoon…

    3) Tough luck for people who bought houses they couldn’t afford. Being an adult means you have to take responsibility for yourself. Are you suggesting the government should pay people’s mortgages?

You appear to be presuming folk lost their homes because they got in above their heads, and while that certainly would have happened, most people lost a roof over their heads as a result of losing their jobs – often because of Government policies.

Just wondering how old you are? Ballpark … if you are sensitive about giving your age away.

I was proud of our bhoys last night and the Udinese fans are fantastic and warmed to the bhoys. Got back in this morning at 5:30 and just got up because of a wrong number!! Spent nearly two hours ploughing through the snow to get back, all lanes into the M8 was blocked around the airport and eventually got on via Paisley!

I was interveiwed by the BBC and my santa hat also drew a lot of attention from the Italian media and the locals, one child started singing “jingle bells” bless her :)

Just saw their goal on the BBC and its worst then I thought, Cha for League Cup games only please!

There are two rules that override all other published rules in SFA/SPL doctrine:

    1) Over the course of a season thou shalt do all that you can, when wearing the national association badge, to ensure that the establishment team achieves honours equitable to master hun status.

    2) Any Celtic player/official who tries to inhibit rule one will be booked and/or vilified, sent bombs and bullets, assaulted in the street, falsely accused of criminal behaviour in the national press, have false witness cast upon him or just branded a fenian b. And if you’re good at taking the pee and you think you can get away with it without attracting undue international scrutiny, subject Timmy to all, and more, of the afore mentioned.

Our big final is our next game; it is the biggest game of our lives. One game at a time Mr. Lennon.

  11. Once A Bhoy..... on

A very young Celtic team did us proud last night and this coupled with the experience our young bhoys are getting in the nextgen series should see us develop into an exciting force in the next 5yrs or so.

A few errors over the course of the group have cost us as is usually the case when mistakes are made against quality opposition. We have shown that we have players who are capable of travelling away and retaining possession now we need to start capitalising when we create chances and cut out the schoolboy errors.

When the group started I thought we would struggle to get 3pts given our form at the time. The media was busy brainwashing the gullible in to believing qualifying for Europe was a bad thing (hunbelievable) and should now be made to eat their chip wrappers and spit covered mikes as this group has provided a platform for our players to gain confidence that should now be carried into the league campaign.

On a final note what did Celtic do to craig burley? His bias against us is disgusting and worthy of complaint to his employers. He and his sidekick continually spout negative drivel regardless of the performance of the team. I am on the point of cancelling my 2 espn subscriptions and watching on the dodgy links to avoid the 2 of them.

    Really??

Jack Jones links with the Broad Left from his Spanish Civil War days were no secret but neither were his subsequent disagreements with Soviet communist policies. It was a standard Murdoch tabloid reaction (and the Spectator, Economist & Times have been no better than the Sun at times) to conflate Socialism with Communism and The Enemy Within, and to present all Trade Union leaders as reds under the bed.

Meanwhile Burgess, Philby McLean & Blunt left the playing fields of Eton for the gold of Moscow and true betrayal.

Sean O’Casey who wrote beautiful humanist plays was an unreconstructed Stalinist

Arthur Koestler who wrote the most powerful pieces of anti-Soviet literature was a former Red.

Christopher Hitchens, may he RIP, was a former Trot who turned rightwards but remained a member of the awkward squad to the end.

I read a story in a wild left publication that Maggie was a sleeper Soviet Spy. Who knew that britain would take her wild utterances so seriously? :-)

P.S. And Jack Jones was a hell of a singer too :-)

  14. Happy with the performance last night. The lesson we should take from these encouraging european performances is that with 4-3-3 / 4 5 1 we can control the game against some very fine teams.

This formation should be played every SPL game.

2 up front makes us weaker.

Off football – it is sad news about Christopher Hitchens. He was good value.

    …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Your sister’s 100% right about the overcrowded curriculum. Not the fault of the teachers but the fault of politicians. Teachers have to ensure that their schools are Eco schools, Health Promoting schools and that we prepare our pupils to be the entrepreneurs of the future. There are far too many subjects/initiatives to be covered during the day. However, if a school neglects any of these areas and decides to concentrate on the basics God help them when HMIE come calling.

Teachers suffer from two illnesses – documentation fatigue and New Initiative fatigue.

With regard to many children leaving school nowadays unable to read or write. I was a Head Teacher for 21 years and have never encountered a child leaving Primary unable to read or write unless they had specific learning difficulties.

There are loads of good teachers being prevented from teaching the basics because of external forces – politicians. Ask your sister if she agrees with my post.

Cool, I’ll take that with a pinch of salt. I think you’ve read a bit too much into what I’ve written, which wasn’t much, on the subject of last nights banner.

I haven’t written anything on the topic of poppies for at least two years – that really is a none story for which I have next to no interest. People could show a little more respect, but, it’s a little bit of a party piece for some on the internet.

A lot of the replies I get are presumptive, and I appear to have a reputation which not only preceeds me, but precludes anyone bothering to read my posts. They are generally careful and deliberate, and most of the replies I get are the opposite. I’m rarely seperating myself from Celtic fans in the way portrayed and my motivations are singular and consistent – I want what’s best for our club.

Today we should be talking about the good to come out of the European run this year. The shortfalls, and obvious deficiencies in our team are most keenly observed at that level. I’m disappointed after this years efforts, but not disheartened.

You’d think a blog full of Celtic fans would be champing at the bit to talk about Forrest, Forster and Sammi. Or Cha, in Macjay’s case (by they way Macjay if you’ve read this far… i almost alway agree re Cha, although do think he gives his all). Many posters are, and my post today was all about the football with a brief note to the effect that I’m a little weary of the Celtic agenda being high-jacked from within by people who really aren’t representing the majority – just because you think they’re cool doesn’t mean you are like them. You have to join the cool club to be in it… So the day I got to CP and hear every fan sing the wrong song (!?) or hold up the wrong banner (!?) then that will be the day I accept that there is no longer a place for me amongst Celtic fans… still though I’ll follow the team.

I am a massive fan of football, the sport, the game, and the players and the teams they form. I’ve played a lot, and I’ve got a bit of game too, so I keenly appreciate the detail of what our players do, how our team comes together and the ethos of Celtic which countless managers and teams have shown me is a delight I’ll never relinquish. Few teams are like Celtic. Few cut a dash the way we do, few have our aspiration.

So, I fight a little for that to be the agenda. Every day that should be the agenda, we’re special because of the long list of players and managers who made us special. Our fans are equally special, and have long cherished the players and the Celtic way – every song I grew up with celebrated this aspect of the Celtic story. All our best songs do.

Anyway, last night showed us what we’re about and teased us with what we could be, and depressed us with how tough the task is these days. We deserve better, and we should focus all our efforts on that…. not least because not that long ago the Celtic fans, as a body, reached a pinnacle of perfection – 03, we showed the world how sports fans can be. We’ve spent a long time since then dealing with a degree of arrogance and intransigence that has sullied that reputation and taken us back in time.

This has already been answered many times. Of course I do not. You seem to think the word “illicit” is a catch all and that UEFA can issue fines on the basis of whim and prejudice. They are a statutory body, however corrupt they may be, and have to operate under rules and regulations subject to challenge.

Of course, if you favour a Kafkaesque judicial system, and are fearful and anxious lest stray coughs and insolent sneezing land you in trouble, then I can see your problem with authority. You have been conditioned to reach for the forelock and issue a quick tug.

P.S. A word of advice. Any criticism of standards in education should be written with better grammar and punctuation lest you appear to be going for a satirical effect.
