Udinese 1-1 Celtic

436

Udinese were pushed all the way tonight but hold on for a point that was enough to get them through to the knock out round of the Europa League at Celtic’s expense.  Gary Hooper gave Celtic the lead but Antonio Di Natale equalised in time added on at the end of the first half.

The game was only six minutes old when Georgios Samaras extended his telescopic legs and moved beyond Benatia to the edge of the Udinese box but the defender dived in front of the Greek striker to con the referee into awarding a free kick.

Udinese should have taken the lead in 12 minutes when Scott Brown was careless with a cross-field pass which was intercepted.  The Celtic defence were caught moving forward and had left Di Natale in acres of space but his lob missed the target.

Gary Hooper was the next sinner 10 minutes later.  Udinese had no answer to the probing of Samaras and James Forrest.  The former beat two players and slid an inch perfect pass inside the full back for Hooper to collect 16 yards from goal.  Unfortunately he failed to find the target with what at that time looked like being the best chance of the game.

Celtic opened the scoring on 28 minutes when Samaras rampaged down the left and sent a dangerous cross between goalkeeper and defence.  Handanovic punched the ball against his own defender and was left stranded when it rolled to an unmarked Hooper three yards from goal.  The Englishman rolled the ball over the line to put Celtic ahead.

With 45 minutes already played Samaras again rampaged down the left but possession was lost as Celtic were reluctant to pour forward seconds before half time.  Udinese moved the ball quickly up field and a fortunate break of the ball allowed them to catch the Celtic defence flat footed.  Cha was wrong side of his player who crossed for Di Natale to finish.  It was an unfortunate break for Celtic who had the better of the first half.

Udinese stepped up the pace after half time and enjoyed their best period of the game.  Fraser Forster made three saves within as many minutes just after the hour mark.  Ten minutes later a sharp passing move provided Asamoa with a gilt edged chance from 10 yards but he turned the ball against the post with Forster stranded but this signalled the end of the home team’s pressure.

Celtic came close to taking the lead again on 74 minutes when Cha DuRi stretched to volley from outside the box.  His shot struck the post with Handanovic unable to reach it.  The ball rebounded off the goalkeeper, who landed on the ground, and spun back towards goal, but Handanovic recovered in time to catch it on the line.

Greek referee, Koukoulakis, did not have a good game, mistook Cha for Scott Brown and incorrectly booked the Korean.  18 minutes later he booked Cha again but had clearly received a message from an assistant informing him of his earlier mistake, leaving Cha bemused and relieved to survive his second yellow card.

Celtic were pressing for the goal but with 10 minutes remaining a slip by Daniel Majstorovic set Di Natale clear.  Fraser Forster then had the most impressive 6 seconds of his career.  The keeper made himself a big target and saved Di Natale’s shot but he had change direction quickly as the ball broke free on the right.  A cross was swiftly dropped onto the head of the unmarked Di Natale 8 yards from goal but Forster changed direction one more time to save again.

The match finished with Celtic camped inside the Udinese box.  The ball broke to Ki inside the six yard box from a Charlie Mulgrew corner but his shot was blocked.  Fraser Forster came forward for two further corners.  From one, Daniel Majstorovic flashed a header goalward but an Udinese defender raised his arm to the ball, however, the referee failed to award a penalty.

Revisionist history time again i see. The IRA supported the Nazis- get a grip the IRA sought aid from the Germans who were fighting the British. Fact – many IRA volunteers fought against the Nazis in Spain. Remember the old adage The enemy of my enemy is my friend- Didn’t Britain Arm and collude with a a regime as bad as the Nazis – Stalin’s Russia, didn’t The SAS train Bin Ladas’ group when they were fighting the Soviets. Didn’t the British Government arm Saddam when Iraq was at war with Iran – shall i go on. Get your facts right

Well thats our European adventure behind us for another year last night was a good efffort by the Bhoys but doesnt gloss over the fact that if Sion hadnt broken the rules we would not have been in the group stages. We need to learn from our campaign and be ready for next seasons European games. We must now return our focus to the SPL the January transfer could be quite interesting with the Poundland team perhaps loseing one or two of there better players of course we may also lose one or two players but due to the size of our squad I think we are in the better position we also might add one or two as well so as I said interesting times ahead.Unfortunately I think we will continue to be in trouble with UEFA as a small group of fans will continue to fluant the rules and if there not carefull this could cost Celtic a lot of money unfortunately I do not know the answer to the problem UEFA are unlikely to back down and neither are the fans.H.H.

Went onto the DR site to find out what this was all and you are correct children indeed. They were just down from me and and as I said earlier wouldn’t serve them in a pub.

  4. PL: it overshadowed a fantastic performance. We have to get these people out of #Celtic park.

PL: these people are not #Celtic supporters and we will weed them out. We are embarrassed.

  5. Sounds like Lawwell’s worried about his bonus.

Yep that banner will be really offensive to an organisation such as Uefa. Tsk. Some people need to get a life. It was a wee bit childish, but that’s it. Dearie me..

As for the flare/smoke bomb, i’m sure the Italians would have been mortified.

I mean why take a wee bit of smoke in, when you can do this!!!

I think that Peter Lawwell has lost touch with the fans here. I think he is more likely to be chased out of Celtic than the guys who spent a large percent of their income to support Celtic in Italy. If he makes this a battle, he will lose.

Some really good ties in the Europa League draw, (Stoke versus Valencia) which makes it all the more disappointing, despite a good campaign, that we are not in it. Let us push on the SPL with a view of playing in the Champions League. Need a target? The Champions League Final in 2013 is at Wembley Stadium, part of the 150th anniversary of the FA.

  10. Met Jack Jones a few times for work reasons when he was a pensions campaigner- fantastic man. Refused all sortrs of honours but accepted the Order of Merit which he donated to the TGWU museum.

    Hail,my fellow Tim.

I have no way of verifying the truth.

The Kremlin say that they “subsidised “Jack Jones .

Who am I to argue with the Kremlin?

  13. Can’t believe some of the bickering on here.

The banner was silly, childish & slightly embarrassing. Nothing more.

The flare was stupid & potentially dangerous.

Let UEFA do what they do based on the rules.

‘We’ put ourselves in this position. If there is no reprimand, fine if there is (assuming it is moderate) accept it like the big club we’re supposed to be.

Surely we can’t treat everybody as having an agenda against us?

In fact complaining about everything negative which happens merely dilutes our complaints when we really are shafted.

Now I hope we can stop the needless debate on this issue and concentrate on our strongly developing squad of players!

  14. James Forrest is Lennon on

Yeah so an excellent performance last night – and it was excellent in every way – has been utterly cast aside by the mindless, moronic actions of a bunch of self-indulgent wannabee revolutionaries who think their view, their warped view, of our club is an accurate representation of what we are about.

Note to the yahoos – you ain’t Celtic. You speak for no-one but yourselves.

This isn’t about our enemies in Scotland coming after us, and this Family needing to oppose that. This is about a small group of supporters trying to pick a fight – a fight, by the way, we cannot win – with people who at present are NOT our enemies. This is about tarnishing, about urinating on, a reputation we have worked hard, damned hard, to cultivate and it has taken us years.

UEFA are not our enemies. They took on Rangers when the SFA had no intention of doing so. Are some of their rules contradictory, like not holding clubs responsible for what happens outside the ground? Of course. To hammer clubs for the behaviour of a few nutters inside the ground whilst they turn the proverbial blind eye and deaf ear to a riot is a piece of nonsense, but they at least have gone boldly where the SFA did not want to go, and made some EFFORT.

I say again, we have no enemies at UEFA. Last night’s showpiece in Italy was as a result of a ruling – a major ruling – in our favour, and that appears to have escaped the notice of some of our so-called fans.

Let me remind them, we in the Celtic Family have a collective word for people who behave in a way which is mindless, arrogant, confrontational and destructive. We call them huns.

Last night their actions damaged our club. The people responsible for it should be hunted down and removed from our fan base. Their actions were not reckless, as some have said, or about freedom of speech or any of that stuff. They have a clear agenda, and if I did not know better (I do, I am not indulging in whatabouterry) I would say some of the people steering them are doing so deliberately to put our club in harms way. Conspiracy theorists of the world unite.

What we saw last night is not about standing up for yourselves in light of attacks from people who wish us ill. It was pure self indulgent nonsense, utterly without merit, completely negative, shocking destructive and brought no credit to anyone involved.

The board had my contempt earlier this week with their shocking decision not to clarify the situation with our fans singing. On this one they have my full support. These people went out of their way last night to provoke the next phase of this, and if the people running Celtic want to clean house and be rid of the lot of them, any sympathy they had from me has gone.

Appalling behaviour by a minority who now seem determined to cause us problems.

  15. Some people I was speaking to were talking about Scott Brown and “match fitness”. Apparently being fit isn’t everything. You need games under your belt to gain match fitness.

Why was this consideration never offered to Sammi when he was wheeled out and expected to perform without having played 90 mins for several games?

I’ve always liked the big guy.

Canamalar I very rarely post on here now but the question you asked has been answered a few times. As far as I know (and I could well be wrong) No British club has flown the swastika. The game you are probably meaning is when the SFA hired Ibrox for an international v Nazi Germany. The swastika flag was the flag of the country Scotland were playing which is why the SFA had it flying. This had nothing to do with Rangers as it was an international

    …………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Hi stranger. You learn something new every day. I’ve never heard anything about a swastika flag over Ibrox. I’m glad you shed some light on the matter.

Something I wanted to say yesterday but forgot. That Wee Naisy of yours is a wee nyaff – normally can’t stand him BUT he did a very good thing in paying for the Christmas dinner for the homeless (Loaves and Fishes Charity) out of his own funds and turned up to mix with the punters. He has risen greatly in my estimation but I’ll be booing him again when he’s fit.

  19. I can’t understand why Celtic fans are still settling for the likes of Samaras, Kayal, Hooper, Ki or the three liabilities at the back especially that Cha fool who alone cost us 4 points in the section? they can hardly compete in the SPL let alone Europe! they either panic or disappear when the going gets tough and have one good game out of ten, thank the good lord for young Forrest and our ON LOAN goalkeeperat at least they saved a bit of face? Lennon should be gone! he’s had long enough and is still living on starved fans sympathy! To be pleased at drawing with an underpar and obviously off form Udinese team (especially old man Di Natale) and with the chances we had is nothing short of accepting 2nd best we’re no better off than when Mowbray was manager we just have a more complicated midfield with Brown forced out right and Forrest forced out left to accomodate a shirker and a one pass wonder no doubt we will be left again with another clear out of rubbish when Lennons sympathy vote runs out as I can’t see him doing the decent thing … Come back Strach’ all is forgiven!
