Udinese 1-1 Celtic

436

Udinese were pushed all the way tonight but hold on for a point that was enough to get them through to the knock out round of the Europa League at Celtic’s expense.  Gary Hooper gave Celtic the lead but Antonio Di Natale equalised in time added on at the end of the first half.

The game was only six minutes old when Georgios Samaras extended his telescopic legs and moved beyond Benatia to the edge of the Udinese box but the defender dived in front of the Greek striker to con the referee into awarding a free kick.

Udinese should have taken the lead in 12 minutes when Scott Brown was careless with a cross-field pass which was intercepted.  The Celtic defence were caught moving forward and had left Di Natale in acres of space but his lob missed the target.

Gary Hooper was the next sinner 10 minutes later.  Udinese had no answer to the probing of Samaras and James Forrest.  The former beat two players and slid an inch perfect pass inside the full back for Hooper to collect 16 yards from goal.  Unfortunately he failed to find the target with what at that time looked like being the best chance of the game.

Celtic opened the scoring on 28 minutes when Samaras rampaged down the left and sent a dangerous cross between goalkeeper and defence.  Handanovic punched the ball against his own defender and was left stranded when it rolled to an unmarked Hooper three yards from goal.  The Englishman rolled the ball over the line to put Celtic ahead.

With 45 minutes already played Samaras again rampaged down the left but possession was lost as Celtic were reluctant to pour forward seconds before half time.  Udinese moved the ball quickly up field and a fortunate break of the ball allowed them to catch the Celtic defence flat footed.  Cha was wrong side of his player who crossed for Di Natale to finish.  It was an unfortunate break for Celtic who had the better of the first half.

Udinese stepped up the pace after half time and enjoyed their best period of the game.  Fraser Forster made three saves within as many minutes just after the hour mark.  Ten minutes later a sharp passing move provided Asamoa with a gilt edged chance from 10 yards but he turned the ball against the post with Forster stranded but this signalled the end of the home team’s pressure.

Celtic came close to taking the lead again on 74 minutes when Cha DuRi stretched to volley from outside the box.  His shot struck the post with Handanovic unable to reach it.  The ball rebounded off the goalkeeper, who landed on the ground, and spun back towards goal, but Handanovic recovered in time to catch it on the line.

Greek referee, Koukoulakis, did not have a good game, mistook Cha for Scott Brown and incorrectly booked the Korean.  18 minutes later he booked Cha again but had clearly received a message from an assistant informing him of his earlier mistake, leaving Cha bemused and relieved to survive his second yellow card.

Celtic were pressing for the goal but with 10 minutes remaining a slip by Daniel Majstorovic set Di Natale clear.  Fraser Forster then had the most impressive 6 seconds of his career.  The keeper made himself a big target and saved Di Natale’s shot but he had change direction quickly as the ball broke free on the right.  A cross was swiftly dropped onto the head of the unmarked Di Natale 8 yards from goal but Forster changed direction one more time to save again.

The match finished with Celtic camped inside the Udinese box.  The ball broke to Ki inside the six yard box from a Charlie Mulgrew corner but his shot was blocked.  Fraser Forster came forward for two further corners.  From one, Daniel Majstorovic flashed a header goalward but an Udinese defender raised his arm to the ball, however, the referee failed to award a penalty.

My Sister teaches P1 but has done all the Ps (if you know what I mean), and she has told me that she knows of kids that have left Primary School who are barely literate, now I would guess this is the fault of a few groups. Teachers, Parents and the kids themselves.

In Primary Schhools they now longer concentrate on the basics, readindg, writing and artithmetic but also have do give equal time to other stuff that while important is secondary to the basics.”

    ———————————————————————————————————————————————————-

As Sadie’sbhoy pointed out an over burdened curriculum and an excess of new initiatives have had an adverse effect on the Scottish education system. However, I can assure you the 3 R’s are still very much at the forefront of the Primary school curriculum.

The only children leaving school without the most basic skills in reading and writing are those who have had some type of specific learning difficulty.

The OECD measures the attainment of pupils in 50 odd countries every 4 years or so in the Programme for International Student Assessment. It’s been running since late 1990s.

It measures Literacy, Maths and Science attainment at 4th and 8th Grade. In Scotland, because our kids start school at a younger age, we measure attainment at P5 and S2 – 5th and 9th Grade effectively.

The most recent survey – 2009 – shows a continuing decline in attainment since the earlier surveys, with Scotland moving from an above average attainment relative to the other countries, to an average attainment for the three topics measured.

Effectively, our actual standard has remained fairly constant, neither improving nor declining overall (although there are trends at the top and bottom end of attainment) but the standards of other countries have improved hence our slip down the rankings.

We now lag behind economies such as Finland, Estonia, Singapore and Shanghai in the standard of education our kids receive.

Used to be true that Scotland had (relatively) world class education.

    Now we’re definitively mediocre.

Not good for the old co-efficient.

  13. Always dissapointed to go out of Europe but immensely proud of the players last night. Very pleased for Fraser who has taken a lot of abuse on these pages, most of which completely undeserved.

Anyway, it was always going to be a tall order getting out of this group with top Spanish and Italian sides in with us. Added to how we got into the group following an appeal, I think UEFA were quite happy for us to participate in the group stages but probably wouldn’t want us any further as Sion probably wouldn’t go away.

Performance wise, there was nothing disgraceful in any of the games. Neil set us out in good formations designed to win games but the odd lapse in concentration cost us vital points. It’s difficult I suppose from the players having to keep concentrated for long periods of the game when they don’t have to do this in the SPL so much. They will improve and I’m sure this experience will help them a lot.

Roll on Sunday and another performance like that and we’ll get the 3 points.

Significantly there is now a distinct lack of desire amongst many young people to actually WANT to learn. There are a multitude of other factors but this shouldn’t be ignored.

Correct Fraser had a great game although we thought he was too slow to come out for the goal but that’s the view we got from behind the goal.

I recorded the game and just watched their goal, he had no chance.

Delighted with the performance from most of the Bhoys last night. Keep it going and we’ll be partying in April let alone May.

Just one thing really sticks in my throat and your thoughts would be most welcome……..how does everyone feel about the “leadership” shown by our “Captain” in allowing a team-mate to take his booking for him? If he then went on to do so off camera and that’s why Cha wasn’t sent off then I apologise but to me it was disgraceful.

As I say, it just wramkles me a bit.

  22. Not too privvy about the banner situation but…..my theory is that, ‘persons’ were planted in amongst the support last night, hoping that by displaying the banner then, the GB would take the fall and, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility that it was the same ‘persons’/journalist who, tried to record the fans in the Nou Camp singing TBOTOB and, submit the recording to stick-in the Celtic fans to UEFA ?

Which backfired as, UEFA dismissed the recording!

Is it just me ,or did the guy not mis hit the cross for their goal? I thought he intended to hit the ball to over lapping team mate on the far side, but sliced it and caught us out.

  26. It’s a wonder that no-one has suggested that Cha is an imposter… the great South Korean wingback is under lock and key somewhere at ‘Media house’ or mordor, and Lennon hasn’t spotted this interloper, possibly because they got to him too.

I don’t think we should be too down on the interlopers sent to undermine us… presumably they’re paying to get in, and with crowds down, because Lennon was got at and is playing the media interloper, it’s good for the finance.

  29. Canamalar I very rarely post on here now but the question you asked has been answered a few times. As far as I know (and I could well be wrong) No British club has flown the swastika. The game you are probably meaning is when the SFA hired Ibrox for an international v Nazi Germany. The swastika flag was the flag of the country Scotland were playing which is why the SFA had it flying. This had nothing to do with Rangers as it was an international
