Uncommon penalties and chaotic weeks of back-biting

782

Kris Commons looked like he had put a lot of practice into taking penalties yesterday.  The ball was firmly hit and found the corner of the net, a feat which is far from impossible but which has been beyond various Celtic players for the last few years.  We have little a little over a month before we could face a penalty kick competition against Juventus.  Penalty kick practice should be on the menu every day between now and then, for the entire squad.

I’m delighted Lukasz Zaluska has had an extended run in the team.  No player will be at his best if he is seldom tested and never in important games.  Lukasz carried his share of the blame for last weekend’s Hampden defeat but not every keeper can pull off a Nigel Spink.  Good to have Fraser back for Inverness.

If you read on a Celtic site that The Rangers chief executive and chairman are “at loggerheads” after “a chaotic week of back-biting” or that there is a prospect they will “frighten the life out of those institutional investors who ploughed £17million into the coffers little more than a month ago”, you would be forgiven for discounting the claim as a case of wishful thinking.

When it comes from the Daily Record and recent colleague of the club’s newly installed head of media you can be sure there is a little more to it than that.

You would think with all the positive feedback Green and Murray would have received form the SPL Commission they would be flush with joys.  I sincerely hope, for their sake, that Phil’s Bridge over Troubled Waters ditty was more wishful thinking than another leak from the media team.  That would be embarrassing.  “Squelch.”

  1. Len Brennan nae bother, what’s more important is how he played and where, ie was he playing in a creative midfield role that I think we badly need. I hope he’s yet another star buy for the Celts.

  3. Morning, Below From The Thunder

    Welcome to Salmondland…

This time last week I was

    stuck in Govan police

    station. My Monday had

    started so differently as I

soaked up the last sun of a

    wee winter break in Spain.

Little did I know when I

    was lying on the beach

    that afternoon that a four-

    strong party from

    Strathclyde Police was

    waiting at Glasgow

    Airport’s passport control

    to welcome me back

    home. Arrested in front of

    hundreds of tourists and

    my upset girlfriend I was

    cuffed and dragged out to

    waiting van and taken to

    Govan police station and

    charged by the Hate Crime

    Unit for offensive

    behaviour at football.

    My supposed crime?

    Apparently my hands were

    seen on the zombie

    banner at the pre-season

    friendly with Norwich and

    my behaviour was so

    offensive that a reasonable

    person would think it could

    have caused serious public

    disorder. After the

    international fugitive

    treatment at the airport I

    was charged and released

for a court date later on

    this season, where I’ll join

    another of the bhoys who

    has also been charged with

    the heinous crime of

    allegedly holding a banner

    having a laugh at our

    former rivals’ expense.

The truth is I doubt even

    the police believe the

    banner could or should be

    illegal, instead it’s the

latest in a series of attacks

    on the Green Brigade and

    the Celtic support. Earlier

    today yet another young

Tim was cleared by a court

    on a charge the judge

    found no evidence to

    prove and we’ve even

    heard of cops taking their

    vendetta against us out of

    the courts and into the

    classrooms of schools

    where they tell schoolkids

    the Green Brigade are

    bigots and laughably use

    the zombie banner as

    evidence of sectarianism.

This is not to mention a

    wide range of other

    harassment, from illegal

    stop and searches of young

    bhoys in 111 to vindictive

    attempts to stop our lads

    earning a living.

    Shooting at zombies is not

    a crime. Neither is

    supporting your team or

    being in the Green

    Brigade.

    Not SDM nor even CQN.

No, those 3 little letters which float in front of his eyes, are inscribed by the hand of Charles Green on a small piece of paper inside Sally’s warchest:

    Simple and succint: I.O.U.

Any time you’re in a newsagent, hide the Rhebel behind the Sport, Mirror or Star.

You’d be amazed at how a small thing could hit their circulation. If we all make a point of being that wee bit more obsessed about small actions that require little effort, but merely a reasonable sized consensus to have an effect, then you could effectively hit them. Your extra 5 seconds doing this, along with hundreds if not thousands of other Bears, could potentially cost them a fair whack.

The same could be said of other papers, such as the Herald who have recently re-employer the Creep.”

Paddy McCourt is one of those Bhoys.

Doesn’t matter that they don’t all go on to be regular superstars; the fact that we produce these players, and they’re all the kind of players who love the jersey, is part and parcel of what it means to play The Celtic Way.

In 2010/11, his most productive season for Celtic, he was behind only Maloney, Commons, Hooper & Stokes in terms of overall productivity (measured by minutes per key contribution). Given both Commons and Maloney play similar roles in the team, Paddy seemed to be useful back up. Since then he has contributed very little, albeit with limited opportunities.

As a supporter, I get excited when he is on the park – there is always the potential for him to do something truly extraordinary. This happens very rarely.

Selfishly I hope he stays for those fleeting promises of magic, but for his sake I hope he goes and becomes a star for a club that will find a regular place for him.
