Uncommon penalties and chaotic weeks of back-biting

782

Kris Commons looked like he had put a lot of practice into taking penalties yesterday.  The ball was firmly hit and found the corner of the net, a feat which is far from impossible but which has been beyond various Celtic players for the last few years.  We have little a little over a month before we could face a penalty kick competition against Juventus.  Penalty kick practice should be on the menu every day between now and then, for the entire squad.

I’m delighted Lukasz Zaluska has had an extended run in the team.  No player will be at his best if he is seldom tested and never in important games.  Lukasz carried his share of the blame for last weekend’s Hampden defeat but not every keeper can pull off a Nigel Spink.  Good to have Fraser back for Inverness.

If you read on a Celtic site that The Rangers chief executive and chairman are “at loggerheads” after “a chaotic week of back-biting” or that there is a prospect they will “frighten the life out of those institutional investors who ploughed £17million into the coffers little more than a month ago”, you would be forgiven for discounting the claim as a case of wishful thinking.

When it comes from the Daily Record and recent colleague of the club’s newly installed head of media you can be sure there is a little more to it than that.

You would think with all the positive feedback Green and Murray would have received form the SPL Commission they would be flush with joys.  I sincerely hope, for their sake, that Phil’s Bridge over Troubled Waters ditty was more wishful thinking than another leak from the media team.  That would be embarrassing.  “Squelch.”

  1. Can anyone explain why a wee diddy team from the fourth division keep on claiming to be the biggest club in Scotland?

By which measure do they justify their claim?

Should our club counter these claims by referring to, e.g. Us having the largest ground in Scotland, best attendances, being Champions, being solvent, having won the European Cup, being in the last 16, having most employees, highest wage bill, highest market value of our squad etc etc? Feel free to add to the list.

There is something beautiful in Paddys play when it’s good.

And you don’t see it in Broon or Ledley.

When it’s not good it looks like he not trying, or not fit.

But that beautiful thing is so rare in players now it’s worth a song, even if most of the time it’s not there.

Worth a song, but maybe not a starting place.

  3. Terry’s Choc to sponsor rank rotten club…..perfick, Rodney, perfick.

Sevco players as useful as chocolate soldiers.

They certainly got melted at the weekend.

  4. Neveralone,

Peter Crouch is an acquired taste, and is not in the Celtic mould, but someone like him on a 6 month loan, would cause real consternation for Juve.

  5. Poor Tony Robinson: 19 series of Time Team finding pots & coins in fields. Show gets canned, crazy lady finds Richard III under a car park. Green asks Tony if he would like to invest his coins.

If Padddys not good enough for top level football in Scotland, maybe you might like to explain how come he is in the first team squad for the champions of Scotland

corkcelt – he would pay that, and happily share a table with you, if anything was available.

If so I would get his details to you – he is a senior exec with an American Oil Co. and flying back on business for 3 days, making sure 12th was in this, in an attempt to get to game, was home and in hospitality on 2nd, but they wouldn’t sell him tickets then

  8. Let the wee nyaffs dribble on about how they’re the biggest club etc.,……just like the poor wee kid at school endlessly fabricating porkies to compensate for a battered and lonely ego.

    More to be pitied.

But these are orange bigots and need ridicule hurled at them permanently and intensely until they cease and desist.

  12. Neveralone,

It is Turin, 9th March , we have drawn 0:0 at CP, we are losing 1 nil in Turin, and with 20 minutes to go , we bring on our very own little & large , with Wee Jamesie, and Crouch ?

I would fancy our chances ?

  13. I would be a big Paddy fan….but I don’t think he is deployed in his best role.

Sometimes players make a rod for their own back.

Paddy supposedly has a fitness problem, so instead of asking him to run at defenders….ask him to sit in front of the holding player and spray the ball about.

IMHO he is the best passer of the ball we have at the club, and is not scared to put the foot in either.

  15. As I say Cowiebhoy I’m not sure if any of the Hospitality Packages are left. There are tickets for sale on the usual Internet sites, these guys are basically touts but to the best of my knowledge are reliable in as much as they do deliver a ticket. they are advertising a behind the goal ticket for £194, and it goes upwards from there. There are plenty of Tickets available amongst the away support, they are advertised at circa 220 dollars but obviously it wouldn’t be advisable to go there.

I’m sure I read last week that Neil was intending to include him in the squad for Juve (Rogic) so I was slightly surprised to read on here that he wasn’t included. However, I think what I posted earlier may have had a part in Neil’s decision making. I don’t really know the full story about Rami Gershon as I haven’t read or heard any comments by Neil.

My own thoughts are that Neil might be considering playing Adam Mathews at left back or for left back cover considering his wonderful display against Barca.

  19. Not posted in ages , thought I’d put down a few thoughts as we lead up to next weeks big game .

Sounds like Forster will be back ok , hopefully after coming through a good 90min test v ICT – he has to be pretty much top of the list of players we’ll need to playing – at the top of their game .

Defense is probably the hardest area to pick the team , Izzy may not be 100% and his defensive performances haven’t been confidence inspiring . Also will Ambrose come back from ANC and walk straight into the team .

Midfield should be a bit easier to select can’t see Brown or Wanyama getting left out and Ledley should get a start too but may be left out .

With Forrest likely to be deployed as a sub I think it’s Between Matthews / Commons for wide right and Samaras / Mulgrew wide left.

Hooper up front on his own , dropping deeper a lot with Sammi going beyond him .

Lennon has a well constructed / flexible squad to chose from , which can switch between the 3 main formations without having to make substitutions .

    Forster

    Lustig Ambrose Wilson Mulgrew

    Matthews Brown Wanyama Ledley Samaras

    Hooper

I cant find any football reason for him being in our squad

But then again i cant give any reason why some supporters sing about a player who has played in about a twentieth of games we have played since he joined

Sad news about Reg. I loved The Troggs in my youth. Apart from the hits Reg’s songs kept getting banned from air play because they were too suggestive. Reg said that he didn’t set out to write suggestive lyrics but when he started to write the songs they just happened to end up that way.

    RIP Reg

  24. Paddy McCourt is a footballer, and a rare one. He should be the playmaker, protected by Wanyama and Ledley. His passing is sublime—it’s just that most of the players are not on his wavelength. Plenty of opinion on here about movement off the ball. If McCourt had that with the team it would be a very different scenario, instead of wanting a wonder goal, or a Hail Mary in US parlance, to rescue a game. As someone else pointed out, at any other team in Scotland he would be a superstar. I certainly don’t want him lining up against Celtic.

  25. TET I would believe that absolutely. I spent my life in the Finance world and was flabbergasted by claims that Sevco raised 17 million from Institutional Investors. The £5 million or indeed any amount raised by supporters is believable as that type of Investment is based on sentiment and not business related.

    Chaps,

Out of interest do you say that based upon the way Juve will line up, or Adam’s earlier performance in Europe this season ?

I think his performance at left back , at wing half , as well as RB , show what a good player he is.

  27. CultsBhoy loves being 1st forever & ever on

I’d like to see Commons feature. He and Samaras have the most quality in our team and at the highest level that’s what counts.

    Commons Vic Ledley Mulgrew

  28. Just a thought.

If the huns need three years accounts to play in europe, and as yet they haven’t filed any interim accounts, I would imagine that they won’t file any till the end of this year, if they last that long, so, by my reckoning, they won’t be eligable to play in europe till season 2017/18 at the earliest.

Sort of scuppers any plans Chuck has for CL football at the bigot dome for a while then.
